Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Holy Flame TotemHoly Flame Totem is the Marauder quest reward from "Enemy at the Gate" (Hillock). Plant two totems and let them clear while you move. Grab Flame Wall from Nessa for a cheap damage boost on the totem's line. Don't equip Blade Vortex yet — you won't have the stats or supports to hold blades.
- Act 2: run Holy Flame TotemPick up Herald of Ash from Clarissa and Flammability from the Intruders in Black quest reward. Bandits: kill all for +2 passives. Buy a Lifesprig wand from trade if you can afford a few alchs — the cast speed + spell damage roll is a cheap early power spike that also helps Blade Vortex later.
- Act 3: run Scorching RayBuy Scorching Ray from Clarissa at L12 — it becomes your bossing skill while Holy Flame Totem handles clear. Also buy Blade Vortex and level it in a spare slot so it's ready for the Act 4–5 swap. Lab 1 in Act 3: take Tukohama, War's Herald for totem damage that bleeds into the Holy Flame Totem setup. Pick up Flame Dash from Clarissa for movement.
- Act 4–5 (L30 BV swap): run Blade VortexThe swap. Around L30, after you reach the Templar spell damage cluster, make Blade Vortex your main skill — you now have enough cast speed to hold 10+ blades. Spell Echo Support doubles your stacking rate, Controlled Destruction Support is the cheapest big-damage support. Keep Scorching Ray linked in a separate slot for ranged bossing until blade count is reliable. Slot Clarity (Act 1 quest) and Purity of Fire (Act 2 Sharp and Cruel reward). Use Steelskin as a panic button.
- Act 6–7 (AoF respec, L45): run Blade VortexRespec into Avatar of Fire after the Templar starting cluster — Blade Vortex now does 100% of its physical damage as fire and scales with every Chieftain bonus. Pick up Determination from the Act 6 Brine King quest reward for flat phys mitigation. Wire up a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Immortal Call + Steelskin panic chain — damage taken at this stage is mostly physical hits, not fire burn.
- Act 8–10 (L60 Hinekora): run Blade VortexLab 3 (Act 9 Sanctum of Innocence): take Hinekora, Death's Fury for fire leech and kill-chance ignite — this is the single biggest ascendancy pick for Blade Vortex sustain. Add Unbound Ailments Support if you're going ignite, or keep Elemental Focus Support if you're pure hit. Upgrade panic chain: Cast when Damage Taken + Molten Shell + Immortal Call. Kitava at Act 10: drop Herald of Ash during the -30% res phases to avoid reflected self-damage.
How leveling works
Blade Vortex on Chieftain is an unusual pairing: Chieftain is traditionally a fire-damage ascendancy, and Blade Vortex is a physical spell. The bridge is Avatar of Fire, which converts 100% of physical damage to fire — every blade then scales with the ascendancy's fire regen, leech, and fire damage over time bonuses. The result is a stationary spinning-blades spell that deals spell damage as fire, ignites through Hinekora, Death's Fury, and sits on top of the ascendancy's signature armour + life regen shell.
The campaign path: level as Holy Flame Totem and Scorching Ray through Acts 1–4 (Marauder has no early spell gems that scale well). Pick up Blade Vortex from Nessa or the Act 3 vendor at L12, but keep it benched until you have the spell damage nodes and cast speed to hold 10+ blades. Around Act 4–5 — after Lab 1 takes Tukohama, War's Herald and you're near the Templar spell damage cluster — swap to Blade Vortex as your main skill. By Act 6 you should be stacking blades to 10+, and by maps you want the full 20-blade cap with Spell Cascade Support for area coverage.
No leveling uniques are mandatory, but Tabula Rasa carries the 6-link until you can afford a linked chest, and Lifesprig + Wanderlust give a cheap cast speed + freeze-immunity leveling combo. Divinarius is a strong mid-act dagger slot (Act 2 vendor at L20) that bumps spell damage and crit — but Chieftain isn't a crit build, so prefer a +1 to Fire Skill Gems sceptre instead. Save real currency for Avatar of Fire respec scrolls (you pick the keystone up during Act 6–7 after the Templar starting area) and a 6-link when you reach maps.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: a +1 to Fire Skill Gems sceptre or wand is the target — craft with Essence of Rage on a wand or buy a rolled sceptre. Blade Vortex does not scale with weapon damage (it's a spell), so flat spell damage + cast speed on the weapon are what matter. Divinarius at L20 is a strong cheap option for the Act 2–5 window.
- · Body armour: Tabula Rasa until maps for the 6-link. After Lab 3, swap to any armour/ES chest with life + resists + life regen. Cospri's Will is the endgame aspiration (free curse application) but expensive — leave it as a late-map upgrade.
- · Helmet: life + resists during the acts. The Blade Vortex helm enchant ("X% increased Damage" or "gain Unholy Might on kill") is the best slot upgrade you can get — farm it in Merciless Lab around L75.
- · Gloves / boots: flat life + resists + 30% movement on boots. Wanderlust is a great early boot slot (no movement requirement and freeze immunity). Gloves should target cast speed rolls for mapping.
- · Rings / amulet: life, fire resistance, cast speed on rings, and a fire-damage amulet with flat spell damage. A "regenerate X life per second" amulet helps the Act 6–7 Avatar of Fire transition window.
- · Flasks: granite flask with "of Iron Skin", a bubbling life flask with "of Staunching" (bleed removal), a diamond flask for crit (optional if not going crit), a quicksilver, and a silver flask for Onslaught cast speed. Ruby flask is a non-negotiable swap-in for any fire-reflect map mod once Avatar of Fire is active.
Weapon progression
Blade Vortex Chieftain does not scale with weapon damage — every blade is a spell damage hit. What the weapon provides is spell damage, cast speed, and gem levels. Vendor-recipe early: any magic wand + Ruby Ring + Orb of Alteration rolls a fire wand with spell damage. At L12, Lifesprig is the best budget pick (cast speed + regen-on-spell). Around L20, either Divinarius (if you want crit for early game only) or a crafted +1 to Fire Skill Gems wand/sceptre via Essence of Rage. One +1 fire sceptre plus a shield carries you all the way to maps; the endgame upgrade is a +2 Fire Gems / +1 Socketed Gems sceptre with flat spell damage and cast speed — multi-divine, waits for red maps.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Do NOT allocate Avatar of Fire before you have Purity of Fire and 75% resist overcap. The keystone converts your damage to fire, and every fire-reflect map mod will shred you without resist overcap. Also verify in PoB that Blade Vortex hit damage is actually routed through fire after the respec — if a gem or item still has added cold/lightning damage as phys conversion, you lose 40-60% of your DPS silently.
- ! Elemental reflect map mods will kill you under Avatar of Fire + stacked Blade Vortex. Always check map mods; reroll reflect or drop blade count before engaging. A ruby flask up plus 5+ overcap handles yellow-map reflect rares but not a full reflect map mod.
- ! Elemental Equilibrium is a trap for this build: you deal only fire damage, so you can't self-proc the -50% cold/lightning res side of EE, and enemies hitting you with fire push your own fire damage resistance on them to +25%. Skip this keystone entirely, even if leveling guides for other fire builds recommend it.
- ! Blade Vortex is stationary — blades spin around YOU, not where you cast. Standing still during boss attacks to stack blades is the #1 death cause at L60–70. Use Flame Dash to reposition and re-stack rather than trying to tank. The Unleash Support in the link chain exists specifically to let you cast during movement.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Swap Cloak of Flame for a corrupted Skin of the Lords with Minion Instability and +2 socketed gems
- Buy Mageblood to unlock four permanent magic flasks and a massive EHP spike
- Pick up the Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh pair for Defy Pain endurance-charge scaling

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Blade Vortex Chieftain's damage engine is a fire-conversion spell stack held together by three uniques that nearly every build at this tier runs. Nebulis is the main-hand sceptre — its signature line grants 8% increased elemental damage per 1% of fire/cold/lightning resistance above 75%, which turns overcapped resistances into a pure damage multiplier. Enmity's Embrace in the ring slot converts that overcap into outright fire penetration up to 200% of your overcapped fire resist, and Avatar of Fire forces every hit to convert to fire so the overcap-penetration loop applies to the full payload. Unnatural Instinct (94% adoption at this tier) sits in a high-density jewel socket and grants all the bonuses of *unallocated* surrounding small passives — a massive raw-stat multiplier that a standard-quality build at L81 can already afford.
The main Blade Vortex 6-link lives in Cloak of Flame, with Minion Pact + Greater Unleash + Arcane Surge Support + Increased Critical Damage Support + Added Fire Damage Support forming the core support chain. Greater Unleash is the build-defining support: it banks spell charges while not casting and dumps them into a single burst, which combines beautifully with Blade Vortex's stack-up-then-shred pattern. Marylene's Fallacy locks spell crit at a confirmed value (no gambling on low crit rolls) and enables reliable Increased Critical Damage Support scaling at 100% crit chance. The tree takes Hinekora, Death's Fury, Tasalio, Cleansing Water, and Valako, Storm's Embrace as the opening Chieftain trio, with generic life/regen notables like Constitution and Barbarism rounding out 3.6k life.
Defences lean hard on Tasalio, Cleansing Water's block + fire-damage-over-time reduction stack. The Heat-attuned Tower Shield pushes block to 65% attack / 31% spell with life recovery on block and charge generation on block — every blocked hit funds an endurance, frenzy, or power charge and ~4% life recover. Cloak of Flame's 40% of physical damage taken as fire routes physical hits into the fire-resist overcap (+67), where Tasalio's DR and 84% capped fire resist eat the redirected damage cheaply. Life regen hits ~670/s between Hinekora, Death's Fury, Valako, Storm's Embrace, and regen rolls across gear. Chaos resist is uncapped at -25% — that's the tier's main exposure and most deaths from map mods trace here.
The ramp-up spell playstyle: cast Blade Vortex two or three times to stack blades up to 10, then step into the pack and let the spinning blades shred everything. Greater Unleash banks charges so opening a new pack releases a burst without re-ramping. Shield Charge + Faster Attacks Support in the helmet handles traversal, and Immortal Call on Cast when Damage Taken Support in the helmet auto-fires when a big hit lands to burn endurance charges into phys immunity. Bosses are slower here — you stand in the arena, maintain stacks, and ride the block+regen loop while blades tick.

Endgame L85–94
- The big shift at endgame is the body-armour pivot to Skin of the Lords with Minion Instability (the minion-life spectre becomes an exploding proc chain) and the belt upgrade to Mageblood. Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh add Defy Pain, and EHP more than doubles via Defiance of Destiny amulet + life-on-hit layers.
- Add Determination aura using a Watcher's Eye with Determination block + crit-damage reduction
- Swap the rare rings for Loath Knot + keep Enmity's Embrace to free up a +110 life suffix slot
- Reach 100+ level with Ashes of the Stars amulet for +1 skill gem levels and +30% gem quality

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The 6-link has moved into a corrupted Skin of the Lords — "You can only Socket Corrupted Gems in this item" gates the gem pool but the keystone granted here is Minion Instability, which turns low-life minions into fire-bomb explosions on death. Combined with the +2 minion gem helmet and a Raise Spectre + Companionship Support + Empower Support setup in the weapon swap, the spectres function as a self-sustaining explosion engine while the main Blade Vortex 6-link (Blade Vortex + Increased Critical Damage Support + Minion Pact + Greater Unleash + Elemental Focus Support + Lifetap Support) scales pure spell damage. Elemental Focus Support is free value here because Avatar of Fire already prevents you from inflicting non-fire ailments, so the 'cannot inflict ailments' drawback costs nothing.
Mageblood is the defining upgrade at this tier — four permanent magic utility flasks running at all times mean Progenesis's damage-taken-over-time conversion, a ruby flask for fire mitigation, an amethyst for chaos, and a silver/granite for armour all stay active without button-presses. Rathpith Globe in the shield slot trades 8% of life per spell cast for 5% increased spell damage per 100 maximum life — at 6.1k life that's a ~300% increased spell damage multiplier, sustained by the life regen and Defiance of Destiny's 24% of missing unreserved life before being hit. The tree pivots toward Arsonist and Magmatic Strikes for raw fire scaling and adds Unwavering Stance for stun immunity. The Balance of Terror adds 8% chance to deal double damage conditional on Vulnerability casts.
EHP jumps to 54k driven by Defiance of Destiny's missing-life conversion — incoming hits that would kill are instead converted to healing up to 24% of your missing life, effectively giving a second life bar that refills on every incoming hit. Progenesis (kept permanently active by Mageblood) converts 25% of life loss from hits to a 4-second DoT, smoothing burst damage into something life regen can out-heal. Life regen climbs to 2.4k/s via multiple gear rolls, Hinekora, Death's Fury, and Valako, Storm's Embrace. Defy Pain from the Forbidden jewels grants endurance charges on hit, pairing with Skin of the Lords's 50% increased elemental and chaos resistances to push all four resistances to 89%+ capped. Block drops to 25% — the Titanium Spirit Shield isn't a block stacker — but spell block climbs to 52% from Rathpith Globe.
The feel shifts from ramp-cast-observe to stack-and-commit. Blade Vortex stacks up during the Shield Charge into the pack, Minion Pact-enabled spectres explode via Minion Instability for kill-chain clear, and Infernal Cry + Enduring Cry + Battlemage's Cry fire on cycle to exert extra fire damage and refresh endurance charges. Progenesis uptime means you can tank hits that would otherwise one-shot and bleed them out through the regen layer. Boss fights stabilize — maintain 10 blades, ride the Rathpith Globe life-loss sacrifice, and cycle warcries for the Infernal Cry damage exert.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational pivots into a block-capped armour stacker: Svalinn shield replaces Rathpith Globe to reach 90% attack and spell block, Determination aura enters the rotation for 90% physical damage reduction, and Ashes of the Stars replaces Defiance of Destiny for +1 skill gems / +30% gem quality across every socket.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The DPS ceiling here relies on Elemental Overload instead of crit — the Skin of the Lords rolls the Elemental Overload keystone, which grants 40% more elemental damage for 8 seconds after a crit but prevents crit-strike damage multipliers. Combined with Ashes of the Stars's +1 to all skill gems and +30% quality, the main Blade Vortex setup runs at effective gem-level 22+ with maxed quality on every support. The 6-link (Blade Vortex + Inspiration Support + Minion Pact + Greater Unleash + Added Fire Damage Support + Culling Strike Support) reaches 2.9M DPS with Culling Strike Support closing out 10%-life pinnacle bosses instantly.
Svalinn's "Chance to Block is Lucky" rolls block twice and takes the better result, turning a base ~60% block into a capped 90% attack / 90% spell block floor when paired with The Red Nightmare (converts fire-resist passives into attack block at 50% value). Impossible Escape unlocks Glancing Blows-radius passives without tree connectivity — used here to grab an otherwise-unreachable cluster of fire-damage notables. The tree adopts Sione, Sun's Roar (the 5th Chieftain node) for damage over time scaling and Sanctuary / Safeguard for block-chance and block-recovery layering. Watcher's Eye contributes +8% block while affected by Determination and 16% of physical damage as extra fire while affected by Anger, turning the aura package into both defensive and offensive scaling.
EHP 385k — roughly 7x the early-mapping value. The layers compound: 90% physical damage reduction from Determination + 29k armour, 90% block (both attack and spell), 90% capped fire/cold/lightning resistances with 287% fire overcap feeding Enmity's Embrace's fire penetration for damage scaling. Unstoppable (granted by the Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh pair on this tier) removes slows and stuns entirely. Life regen at 2k/s plus 5 endurance charges covers the rare hit that slips past block. Chaos resist caps at 75% with +48 overcap, chaos-damage-over-time finally becoming a non-issue. The only remaining exposure is uncounterable mechanics like Sirus die beams and Uber Maven memory-game one-shots.
Unkillable fire tank with screens-worth-of-blades clear. Shield Charge into a pack, Blade Vortex hits maximum stacks instantly thanks to Greater Unleash banked charges, and Herald of Ash + Righteous Fire passive damage chains kill-explosions across the screen. Bosses are trivial — stand on them, let the 90% block + 90% phys DR + Mageblood flask uptime absorb everything, and let Blade Vortex's maintained stacks eat through their life bar. Infernal Cry + Enduring Cry fire on cooldown for the warcry exert damage spike during burn windows. The build hits the classic Chieftain power fantasy: the screen dies around you while you casually move forward, with flask uptime permanent and regen covering any incidental damage.
