Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Freezing PulseFreezing Pulse is the Witch quest reward from Hillock — a strong early clear skill that also freezes trash for safety. Grab Frost Bomb from the Medicine Chest reward to break tough rares. Don't touch Blade Vortex yet — the damage is miserable at L4 and you don't have the cast speed to maintain blades. Added Lightning Damage Support slots in naturally and foreshadows the lightning conversion later.
- Act 2: run Freezing PulsePick up Herald of Ice from Yeena and Conductivity from the Intruders in Black quest reward — Conductivity is your lightning curse from here through maps. Bandits: kill all for +2 passives. Buy Flame Dash from Yeena for movement. Arcane Surge Support linked to a low-level Flame Dash gives you a free cast speed buff whenever you reposition.
- Act 3: run ArcSwap to Arc from Clarissa at L12 — chain-lightning clear is a massive upgrade over Freezing Pulse in the cramped Act 3 sewers. Also buy Blade Vortex and level it in a spare gem slot so it's ready for the Act 4–5 swap. Add Herald of Thunder from the Library quest for a second clear layer. Lab 1 in Act 3: take Shaper of Storms — free shock on every hit, 20% shock effect baseline, and it scales every single lightning skill you'll ever slot.
- Act 4–5 (L28 BV swap): run Blade VortexThe swap. Around L28 after Spell Echo Support is available, make Blade Vortex your main skill — you now have enough cast speed to hold 8+ blades. Controlled Destruction Support is the cheapest large-multiplier support at this level. Keep Arc linked separately as a ranged boss skill until your blade stack is reliable. Lab 2 at Kaom: take Mastermind of Discord — this is where Herald of Thunder starts applying lightning exposure (−25% enemy lightning resistance), a flat 25% more damage multiplier for the rest of the campaign.
- Act 6–7 (Wrath + conversion): run Blade VortexWrath unlocks at L38 — buy it from Lilly Roth in Act 6 and slot immediately. Wrath adds a huge flat lightning damage number to every blade and, critically, routes lightning exposure through Mastermind of Discord. Drop Herald of Ice to free mana reservation. This is also the window to buy a Call of the Brotherhood ring if you can afford one — the 50% cold-to-lightning conversion is the first step of the "everything is lightning" plan. Wire up a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Immortal Call + Steelskin panic chain.
- Act 8–10 (full conversion): run Blade VortexLab 3 in Act 9: take Heart of Destruction for more area of effect and elemental damage while stationary — which is exactly how Blade Vortex plays. By Act 9–10 you should have the full phys-to-lightning chain: Tempered by War on the tree (50% fire/cold → lightning) plus Call of the Brotherhood (50% cold → lightning). Add Lightning Penetration Support to the 5-link once you can craft or buy one. Kitava at Act 10: drop Wrath during the res-cut phases to keep mana pool, re-reserve after the phase.
How leveling works
Blade Vortex Elementalist is the canonical "turn the physical blades into pure lightning" variant — Shaper of Storms gives you guaranteed shock on every hit, Mastermind of Discord routes Wrath into lightning exposure for a flat −25% enemy lightning resistance, and the rest of the ascendancy stacks elemental damage multipliers on top. At level-cap the build is a 20-blade stationary spinner that converts 100% of its physical spell damage to lightning, shocks for 50%, and exposes for another −25% — effectively a 100%-more damage multiplier layered on top of a generic crit spell caster.
The campaign path runs through the Witch starting area: level as Freezing Pulse Act 1, pick up Arc around L12 for Act 2–3 clear, then swap into Blade Vortex around L28 once Spell Echo Support is available and you have enough cast speed to hold 8+ blades reliably. The Lab-pick order is Shaper of Storms → Mastermind of Discord → Heart of Destruction → Beacon of Ruin. Shaper of Storms is the earliest and most important — it unlocks free shock and removes the need for any Wave of Conviction setup.
The phys-to-lightning conversion is done via Call of the Brotherhood ring or Tempered by War on the tree, plus the Static Blows cluster near Shadow for more shock effect. You do NOT allocate Elemental Equilibrium on this build — the lightning-on-hit from Blade Vortex plus the lightning exposure from Wrath would fight each other. Skip it.
No specific leveling uniques are mandatory. Tabula Rasa carries the 6-link, Lifesprig wand gives a cheap early cast speed spike, and Goldrim solves resistances through Act 8. Save real currency for a +1 to Lightning Skill Gems wand crafted via Essence of Wrath, a Call of the Brotherhood ring (usually 1 divine early league, much cheaper after week 2), and a proper 6-link armour once you hit maps.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: a +1 to Lightning Skill Gems wand crafted via Essence of Wrath is the target. Flat spell damage, cast speed, and lightning flat-adds on the wand are what matter — Blade Vortex is a spell and ignores weapon damage. Lifesprig carries the early acts cheaply.
- · Offhand: a shield with life, resists, and spell damage during leveling. Late-game, a convoking wand dual-wield setup gives more DPS but gives up the defensive layer — keep shield through campaign, swap if you hit mapping without defensive problems.
- · Body armour: Tabula Rasa until maps for the 6-link. Post-maps, any armour/ES chest with life + resists + a 6-link. Inpulsa's Broken Heart is the meta chest upgrade for shock-builds but usually waits until week 2 when prices drop.
- · Helmet: life + resists during the acts. The Blade Vortex helm enchant ("X% increased Damage per Blade" or "gain Unholy Might on kill") is one of the biggest single-slot upgrades — farm Merciless Lab around L75.
- · Gloves: flat life + resists + cast speed. Asenath's Gentle Touch is a cool endgame option but unnecessary during leveling.
- · Boots: 30% movement + life + resists. Wanderlust is a cheap early option with freeze immunity.
- · Rings: Call of the Brotherhood on at least one slot for the 50% cold-to-lightning conversion, other slot any lightning-flat + life + resist rare. Don't run two Brotherhood rings — the conversion caps at 100% and the second ring is wasted.
- · Amulet: a rare with flat lightning damage to spells, life, and cast speed. An Anoint with Whispers of Doom (double curse) is a strong endgame anointment for stacking Conductivity + a second curse like Ele Weakness.
- · Belt: stygian vise with life, resists, and an abyss jewel slotting flat-lightning-to-spells. Heavy belt with life and strength works fine during campaign.
- · Flasks: silver flask for Onslaught, quicksilver for movement, granite with "of Iron Skin" for armour spikes, bubbling life flask with "of Staunching" (bleed), topaz flask for lightning reflect maps. Diamond flask is non-mandatory since the build doesn't rely on crit.
Weapon progression
Blade Vortex Elementalist doesn't scale with weapon damage — every blade is a spell damage hit. What the weapon provides is spell damage, cast speed, gem levels, and flat lightning add-to-spells rolls. Vendor-recipe in Act 1: any magic wand + Sapphire Ring + Orb of Alteration rolls a cold wand with spell damage, swap to lightning via Essence of Wrath once you pick up Wrath in Act 6. Lifesprig at L12 is the best budget pick (cast speed + regen-on-spell). Around L40, craft a +1 to Lightning Skill Gems wand via Essence of Wrath — a clean +1 lightning wand plus a shield carries you all the way to red maps. The endgame upgrade is a +1 to all Spell Gems / +1 Socketed Lightning Gems crafted wand or sceptre with flat spell damage and cast speed — multi-divine, waits for red maps.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Do NOT allocate Elemental Equilibrium. Blade Vortex hits with lightning, which would push enemy lightning resistance UP by +25% — the opposite of what you want. EE only works for builds that hit with one element and deal damage with a different one.
- ! Lightning reflect map mods are build-killers once your DPS ramps up. Always check map mods before entering. A topaz flask with "of Grounding" plus 5+ lightning resist overcap handles reflect rares but not a full reflect map mod — reroll those.
- ! Blade Vortex blades spin around YOU, not where you cast. Standing still to stack blades during boss attacks is the #1 death cause at L60–80. Use Flame Dash to reposition and re-stack rather than tanking through telegraphed attacks. Unleash Support exists specifically to let you cast during movement.
- ! The phys-to-lightning conversion order matters: phys → lightning (from Tempered by War, gear) happens BEFORE cold → lightning (from Call of the Brotherhood). This means you cannot double-convert the same damage, and you cap at 100% conversion per element. Running two Call of the Brotherhood rings wastes the second one — use a rare ring in the other slot.
- ! 3.28 Mirage: the Exceptional Support gems drop from maps and replace the Awakened gem tier. Greater Spell Echo is the direct upgrade for BV; Greater Multiple Projectiles and Greater Volley do NOT apply here (BV is not a projectile skill) — don't slot them into the main link by accident when you finally drop one.
- ! Wrath reservation is 50% mana baseline. Without enlighten-level gems or mana reservation nodes, running Wrath + Clarity + Herald of Thunder will starve you. Plan reservation nodes on the tree around L50 or drop Clarity until you can afford the fix.
- ! Elementalist's Shaper of Storms gives free shock, but the shock magnitude is still bound to damage dealt. Shocks against pinnacle bosses only reach their full 50% value once your hit damage is significant — don't expect endgame-shock numbers during the campaign, the multiplier ramps with gear.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Replace the magic wand with a Grace of the Goddess prophecy wand — the endgame reference's main weapon, grants gain 50% phys as extra fire / 41% as extra cold / 50% as extra lightning for a triple-conversion payoff under Hatred
- Pick up Svalinn in the off-hand — Chance to Block is Lucky plus the socketed-spell-on-block trigger is the endgame defensive skeleton
- Anoint Shaper of Storms and grab it on the tree — self-shock on every cast enables a stack of ailment-conditional multipliers (Heart of Ice breakpoints, Hypothermia breakpoints)

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
At this tier the build is already running the signature Elementalist herald stack — the L83 reference has Herald of Thunder, Herald of Ash, Herald of Agony, and Herald of Ice all socketed in the gloves, plus Herald of Purity in the shield and Herald of the Hive granted for free by Lost Unity in the ring slot. Bringer of Ruin is doing the heavy lifting — the Elementalist ascendancy notable grants a free extra herald at 100% effect and buffs herald damage, which is why the build can sustain six active heralds on a modest mana pool. The four golems in the boots (Stone, Flame, Ice, Lightning) are fueled by Liege of the Primordial, the second Elementalist pick, which grants immunity to elemental reflect and buffs both the player and the golems per golem summoned.
The main Blade Vortex 6-link in the chest runs Unleash Support + Added Fire Damage Support + Power Charge On Critical Support + Physical to Lightning Support + Increased Critical Strikes Support. Physical to Lightning Support is the conversion cornerstone at this budget — BV is a physical spell by default, and turning half the hit into lightning stacks with Mastermind of Discord's lightning exposure from Herald of Thunder. Astramentis on the neck adds +99 to all attributes, which compounds both Blade Vortex's int scaling and the whole herald reservation pool. Asenath's Gentle Touch gloves curse enemies with Temporal Chains on hit and make your on-kill corpse-explosions chain-clear packs. The tree grabs Heart of Ice, Arcanist's Dominion, Deep Thoughts, and Heart and Soul for generic spell-crit and int scaling.
Early defences are thin — 3118 life plus 423 energy shield for an 18k EHP pool, backed by 22% block / 48% spell block from the generic shield and Tempest Shield. 5 power charges from Power Charge On Critical Support contribute to crit but don't add defence directly. Resistances are capped at 75% fire/lightning but cold is underwater at 45% — that's the first thing to fix before red maps. Bastion of Elements (third Elementalist pick) eliminates elemental reflect entirely, which matters a lot when four heralds are simultaneously reflecting damage back on packs.
High-APM spin-and-shred. Blade Vortex stacks up in two or three casts thanks to Unleash Support, then Flame Dash positions you on the pack and the herald-stack + golem + Asenath's Gentle Touch on-kill explosions chain-clear the screen. 3.1 casts/sec base cast speed means the blade ring re-stacks almost instantly after bossing. The feel at this tier is fragile but fast — you can't afford to eat hits, but the screen evaporates if you keep moving.

Endgame L85–94
- The herald stack and four-golem setup carry forward unchanged, but the damage chassis upgrades hard. Grace of the Goddess prophecy wand replaces the magic wand for triple-elemental conversion, Svalinn enters the off-hand for block-lucky coverage, and the helmet becomes a rare Archdemon Crown with socketed Hypothermia Support + Increased Area of Effect Support and 30% more elemental damage for socketed gems. Shaper of Storms and Mastermind of Discord are now allocated on the ascendancy.
- Grab Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocating Forbidden Power — 54% of endgame reference builds run this combo, and both jewels together grant a big power-charge scaling multiplier
- Swap to a rare Sambar Sceptre or Death Knell with +1 spell gems + spell crit chance — the aspirational template drops the unique wand entirely for rare crit-scaling weapons
- Anoint Whispers of Doom on the amulet to run a second curse — the build already curses Temporal Chains via Asenath's and Elemental Weakness via the socketed ring, and an anointed second curse lets both stay active

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
DPS jumps to 5.86M at 26.88% crit with 4.04x multi. The Archdemon Crown helmet is the hidden damage engine — +2 to socketed skill gems and -2 to support gems means the socketed Raise Spectre + Minion Life Support + Companionship Support + Empower Support run effectively at gem level 22+, and the innate Hypothermia Support bonus pumps the cold-conditional damage against self-shocked / self-chilled targets. Shaper of Storms is now live — every lightning hit shocks enemies, enabling Hypothermia Support's cold-conditional and Heart of Destruction's exposure. Mastermind of Discord (fourth Elementalist pick) gives +25% lightning penetration while Herald of Thunder is active, turning the single-target shred against bosses up a notch.
The main 6-link is in the Svalinn-triggered socketed-spell chain (Cold Snap + Frost Bomb + Bonechill Support) AND the helmet (Blade Vortex + Increased Critical Damage Support + Minion Pact Support + Greater Unleash Support) — the character is running two parallel damage loops. Greater Unleash (83% meta share at endgame) replaces base Unleash Support for a bigger burst on the first cast after pause. Minion Pact Support is Elementalist-typical: the support gem banks minion life and trades it for spell damage, feeding off the spectres socketed elsewhere. Watcher's Eye grants 30% phys-to-fire while affected by Anger and 15% cold penetration while affected by Hatred — the penetration line compounds with Mastermind of Discord's lightning penetration for all three elements covered simultaneously.
EHP 74k is driven almost entirely by block — 71% attack block / 85% spell block from Svalinn's Chance to Block is Lucky roll-twice-take-best rule. 6 power charges via Overcharge contribute to crit but no defence. Life stays modest at 2510 — this is still a squishy caster chassis that survives by not getting hit, not by tanking. Chaos resist climbs to 63% via Lost Unity + gloves + boots rolls, closing the biggest early-mapping hole. Fire/cold/lightning all capped at 75% with meaningful overcap on fire (+60) for Lost Unity-adjacent scaling. Pantheon is Brine King + Abberath for stun and burning-ground immunity — a key pairing for a character that has to stand still to channel the blade ring.
Charge, detonate, reposition. Shield Charge + Faster Attacks Support slams into the pack, Greater Unleash Support-banked charges dump into a ten-blade ring instantly, and the combined herald stack + Bastion of Elements reflect-immunity + Asenath's Gentle Touch on-kill chain explodes the screen. Svalinn's socketed-spell-on-block trigger fires Cold Snap + Frost Bomb automatically whenever you block a hit, which happens constantly thanks to the lucky block roll — the build is effectively two damage engines running in parallel. Boss fights are positioning puzzles: stand on them for maximum overlap, keep Vaal Blade Vortex ready for the burst phase, and cycle Flame Dash to avoid telegraphed slams.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational pivots off the unique wand and onto crafted rare crit sceptres (+1 all spell gems + 67%+ spell crit chance), swaps Astramentis for Replica Dragonfang's Flight (+3 Blade Vortex levels — the single largest gem-level jump in the build), adds Circle of Ambition for herald reservation-efficiency scaling, and picks up the Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh pair. Shaper of Storms remains the keystone identity; Mastermind of Discord remains the lightning-pen payoff.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
DPS hits 25.4M at 86.6% crit chance with 4.02x multi. Replica Dragonfang's Flight is the damage multiplier that defines this tier — +3 to all Blade Vortex gems effectively runs BV at level 23, which pushes base damage per blade up by a large amount before any support scaling. Circle of Ambition in ring 2 grants +1 maximum power charge (so 8 total with tree scaling) and 10% mana reservation efficiency of heralds — that's what makes the full stack of Herald of Purity + Herald of Thunder + Herald of Ice + Herald of Ash + Herald of Agony + Herald of the Hive fit on the mana pool simultaneously. The 6-link chest runs Vaal Blade Vortex + Greater Unleash Support + Increased Critical Damage Support + Power Charge On Critical Support, with Hatred + four heralds + Hatred's cold-conversion all stacked.
Cluster jewels widen the tree significantly. Unnatural Instinct (79% meta share) near the Scion start grants all unallocated small-passive bonuses for raw stat density. Militant Faith timeless jewel converts Templar radius into Devotion-scaling elemental damage per 10 Devotion and effect of non-damaging ailments per 10 Devotion — that's a direct scaling of the self-shock from Shaper of Storms and the cold chill from Hatred. Large Cluster Jewels carry Doryani's Lesson (life leech from elemental damage) + Blanketed Snow (huge Hypothermia-synergy node) + Sadist (multiplier vs chilled enemies). The Red Nightmare converts fire-resist nodes in radius to attack-block contribution, which is why block stays at 90% capped at this tier.
EHP 154k on paper and roughly 162k at the median for the tier. 90% attack block / 90% spell block is the hard floor from Svalinn + The Red Nightmare + Tempest Shield. 52% physical damage reduction is achieved without Determination — the armour comes from Disciple of the Forbidden and a rare Sacrificial Garb. 8 power charges contribute 32% crit chance. Rumi's Concoction in the flasks adds +12% attack block / +6% spell block during effect to push over the cap on demand. Taste of Hate converts 28% of fire and lightning damage taken to cold during effect, and Hatred then scales that cold hit back as damage-for-you while reducing the inbound magnitude. Watcher's Eye contributes +1.6% crit chance while affected by Hatred and 1.1% damage leeched as life while affected by Vitality — Vitality is the sustain layer for the low life pool. Chaos resist finally reaches a safe 25% capped — still the main hole, but Lost Unity's +36% chaos res and the gloves' +26% chaos res keep it manageable.
The endgame Elementalist power fantasy. Vaal Blade Vortex + Greater Unleash Support means every burst opens with a full-stack instant detonation, and the herald stack + golem fleet means map clear is entirely passive — packs explode while you're still casting on the next one. Headhunter-triggered rare-kill buffs give temporary modifier stacking that can push damage another 10x during clear. Bossing is stand-on-top, channel, and watch the ring hit at ~19 effective stacks/sec with crit-multi supports. Frostblink is the sole movement skill for positioning into bullet-hell windows. The build hits the classic Elementalist ceiling — every damage type is penetrated, every ailment is self-applied, every herald is a damage bucket stapled to the main hit.
