Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Freezing PulseFreezing Pulse is the Witch quest reward from "Enemy at the Gate" (Hillock). It's the strongest Act 1 clear skill in the game — the projectiles slow enemies on hit and chill after freeze, so you kite trivially. Link Arcane Surge Support at level 4 (the gem only activates while low-level, so watch the cast-count trigger). Use Frost Bomb for rares and Brutus — it stacks cold exposure and shreds single-target. Do NOT equip Blade Vortex yet, you have neither the stats nor the supports to hold blades.
- Act 2: run Freezing PulsePick up Herald of Ice from Clarissa (Act 2 vendor) — the cold shatter explosions chain through packs and preview the Profane Bloom pattern you'll lean on later. Grab Frostbite from the Intruders in Black quest reward. Bandits: kill all for +2 passives. Buy a Lifesprig wand if you can — cast speed + spell damage carries Freezing Pulse hard and transfers cleanly to Blade Vortex in Act 4.
- Act 3: run Freezing PulseBuy Blade Vortex from Clarissa at L12 and level it in a spare slot — it needs to catch up to your character level before the Act 4–5 swap, so every hour it sits idle in a spare socket is fine, but every hour it's unlinked is wasted. Lab 1 in Act 3: take Profane Bloom — cursed enemies explode on death for 25% of their life as chaos damage, which gives you the cursed-kill chain that defines Occultist clear. Frostbite applies the curse; the chain starts. Pick up Flame Dash from Clarissa for movement.
- Act 4–5 (L30 BV swap): run Blade VortexThe swap. Around L30, after you've taken the Witch spell damage cluster and the first two or three Shadow cast speed wheels, make Blade Vortex your main skill — you now have enough cast speed to hold 10+ blades. Spell Echo Support doubles your stacking rate. Hextouch Support applies Frostbite on every blade hit so Profane Bloom fires on every kill — this is the Occultist clear loop. Drop Herald of Ash-tier strategies and reserve Hatred (Act 5 Kitava's Torments reward) for the cold-conversion damage boost. Clarity is the Act 1 reward — slot it for cheap mana regen while you scale cast cost.
- Act 6–7 (L45, Profane Bloom online): run Blade VortexAct 6 adds Discipline as a quest reward — slot it immediately, this is the first real ES reservation that starts scaling your defensive pool toward the Chaos Inoculation respec later. Lab 2 (Act 7 Crypt of the Crescent Moon) should take Malediction — enemies within 1.5 seconds of your hit are affected by your curses even if they're uncursed, and cursed enemies take 10% increased damage. Add Unleash Support to the main link — banking spell charges while moving and dumping them into the next Blade Vortex cast covers the re-ramp after a Flame Dash. Wire up a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Molten Shell guard.
- Act 8–10 (L60 Forbidden Power): run Blade VortexLab 3 (Act 9 Sanctum of Innocence): take Forbidden Power for gain-power-charge-on-hit + the generic 1% cast speed per power charge bonus. At maximum power charges Blade Vortex stacks to 20 blades in about 1.5 seconds, which is when the skill actually feels strong. Added Cold Damage Support replaces any residual phys scaling in the link — by this point your build is a cold-conversion spell and every blade is fully elemental. Kitava at Act 10: keep Hatred up but prepare for the -30% all res phases; Ruby Flask is optional since you're not fire-converted.
How leveling works
Blade Vortex Occultist is the Witch's answer to a melee-range spell stacker. Unlike the Chieftain fire-conversion version of the same skill, Occultist leans into the class's native tools: energy shield as the main defensive pool, Profane Bloom cursed-enemy explosions for clear chains, Malediction stacking two curses at once, and Forbidden Power for raw power-charge-driven crit and cast speed. The campaign target is a Chaos Inoculation shell by late maps — 1 life, huge ES pool, immune to chaos damage — with the offensive core scaling through spell crit and ES-as-damage interactions like Rathpith Globe or Doryani's Prototype on later characters.
The campaign path: level as Freezing Pulse + Frost Bomb through Acts 1–3. Witch's opening cluster is pure spell damage and cast speed, and Freezing Pulse with Arcane Surge Support melts white-mob packs while Frost Bomb handles rares and bosses. Pick up Blade Vortex at L12 from the Act 3 vendor (Clarissa sells it to int casters) and level it in a spare slot — but do NOT swap to it as your main skill until Act 4–5 once you have Spell Echo Support, Controlled Destruction Support, and enough cast speed on the tree to hold 10+ blades. Before that, Blade Vortex feels weak because each individual blade is a low-damage hit; its strength is in stacking, not per-cast burst.
Around Act 6–7, once the Witch starting area and Shadow spell damage clusters are done, swap Blade Vortex to the main-hand link and start running Hatred for cold conversion. Lab 1 should already have Profane Bloom taken, which gives the explosion-on-cursed-kill pattern that defines Occultist clear. Leveling uniques that carry: Tabula Rasa for the 6-link, Lifesprig or Silverbranch wand for cast speed + spell damage, and Wanderlust boots for freeze immunity plus movement. The Chaos Inoculation respec is a late-maps move, NOT a leveling goal — drop it in once you hit 4k+ ES on gear, typically red maps onwards.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: a wand or sceptre with spell damage + cast speed + flat cold to spells is the target. +1 to Cold Skill Gems on a wand (Essence of Rage craft) is the power-spike slot once you can afford it, but an alch-and-go rare wand with +80% spell damage carries through white maps. Lifesprig at L4 and Silverbranch at L12 are both cheap early options — Lifesprig is strictly better if you have the regex budget.
- · Body armour: Tabula Rasa until you can buy a rolled 5-link or 6-link ES chest. The Witch +1 level of socketed gems chest (crafted via Essence of Woe on an ES base) is the mid-map target. Shavronne's Wrappings is the low-life / CI endgame aspiration — DO NOT buy it during leveling, you aren't yet gear-rich enough to survive on its pure-ES pool.
- · Helmet: life + resists + ES during the acts. The Blade Vortex helm enchant — "X% increased Blade Vortex Damage" or "gain Arcane Surge on Blade Vortex cast" — is the best slot upgrade you can get, farm Merciless Lab around L75.
- · Gloves / boots: flat life + ES + resists + 30% movement on boots. Wanderlust is a great early boot slot — no level requirement, freeze immunity, and +20% movement speed means you can run them from L1 straight through Act 5. Cast speed gloves are the mid-level target, then swap to ES-prioritised rares as you approach the CI respec.
- · Rings / amulet: life, cold resistance, cast speed on rings, and a cold-damage amulet with flat spell damage. Any unique amulet with +1 to all int skill gems or +1 to cold skill gems is a cheap power spike — Astramentis is overkill at this stage. Atziri's Foible can carry mana issues in the Hatred + Discipline double-reserve window.
- · Flasks: a bubbling life flask with "of Staunching" (bleed removal), a Chemist's Quicksilver of Adrenaline, a Silver Flask of Warding (curse removal — Occultist runs two curses so enemy curse-reflect mods on maps matter), a Jade Flask of the Iguana for evasion during the phys-vulnerable acts, and a Diamond Flask for crit once you have the base crit tree. Save a flask slot for an Eternal Mana Flask of Adrenaline — the Hatred + Discipline reservation combo eats cast mana quickly.
Weapon progression
Blade Vortex Occultist is a pure spell — weapon damage does nothing. What the weapon provides is spell damage, cast speed, gem levels, and (later) flat cold damage to spells for Hatred to scale. Vendor recipe Act 1: any wand + Sapphire Ring + Orb of Alteration rolls a cold-damage wand with spell damage. At L4, Lifesprig is the best budget pick (cast speed + life regen + mana regen). At L12, Silverbranch offers +2 to socketed Bow gems — skip for this build; stick with a rolled magic wand or craft via Essence of Rage on a wand base for +1 to Cold Skill Gems. One +1 Cold Skill Gems wand plus a shield with ES + resists carries you all the way to maps; the endgame upgrade is a +2 Cold Gems / +1 Socketed Gems sceptre with flat cold to spells + cast speed — multi-divine, waits for red maps.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Do NOT allocate Chaos Inoculation during the acts or early maps. At L40 your ES pool is 800–1200; CI locks you to 1 HP with that ES as your entire life bar — every white-mob hit will one-shot you. The earliest reasonable CI respec is L75+ with 4k+ ES on gear. The reference L81 ladder build is still on a life-hybrid shell (2827 life, 3809 ES) — that is the intentional middle state, not a mistake.
- ! Blade Vortex is stationary — blades spin around YOU, not where you cast. Standing still during boss attacks to stack blades is the #1 death cause at L60–70 when your ES pool is still small. Use Flame Dash to reposition and re-stack rather than tanking; Unleash Support exists specifically to let you cast during movement so the re-ramp is cheap.
- ! Profane Bloom only triggers on CURSED enemies. If Frostbite or Despair isn't reliably hitting the pack — because your Hextouch Support is un-linked, or the curse gem is low level, or the enemy is curse-immune — the explosion chain silently fails and clear feels sluggish. Always verify in your link that Hextouch Support is in the Blade Vortex group, not a separate link, and check the curse applies on-hit during mapping.
- ! Do NOT reserve both Hatred and Discipline until you have Charisma (8% reduced reservation) or Enlighten Support at level 3+. A naive double-reserve eats ~75% of your mana pool, leaving nothing to cast Blade Vortex with. Drop Discipline first if mana becomes a problem during Act 6–7, and slot it back in once Charisma is allocated.
- ! Eldritch Battery is tempting as a mana solution — convert ES to mana to fuel casts — but for a CI-bound build it is a TRAP. Eldritch Battery + Chaos Inoculation together leave you with 1 HP and no ES pool (since ES is now a mana bar), so any chaos damage instantly kills you. The Mind Over Matter + Eldritch Battery variant exists in the ladder but is a DIFFERENT build path from this one — stick with the CI track and solve mana via Charisma + Enlighten Support.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Push ES rolls on every slot and respec into Chaos Inoculation once the pool passes 4k
- Upgrade the weapon to a crafted +1 Cold Skill Gems sceptre or wand with added flat cold to spells
- Pick up Charisma so you can reserve a third aura (Clarity or Determination) without starving mana

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Blade Vortex Occultist at early mapping is the awkward middle stage — a life-hybrid shell on the way to Chaos Inoculation, not yet committed to either pool. The reference L81 ladder build runs 2827 life alongside 3809 energy shield, which is the intentional transitional state: enough ES to matter as a second life bar, not yet large enough to justify throwing the life pool away. Profane Bloom is the offensive centrepiece — cursed enemies explode on death for 25% of their maximum life as chaos damage, which the Hextouch Support-linked Blade Vortex setup applies to every pack via Frostbite. The explosion chains through trash mobs faster than the blades tick, so clear feels like a cursed-kill detonation wave rather than a per-target damage curve.
The main link runs Blade Vortex + Spell Echo Support + Controlled Destruction Support + Hextouch Support + Unleash Support + Added Cold Damage Support in a Tabula or cheap 5-link ES chest. Spell Echo Support doubles the stack-up rate so reaching the 10-blade threshold takes two casts instead of four. Unleash Support banks spell charges during Flame Dash repositioning and dumps them into the next cast, which keeps blade count steady between packs. Controlled Destruction Support is the biggest flat-damage multiplier available at this tier and its "cannot deal crit" drawback is free because Occultist hasn't yet allocated the crit notables.
Hatred + Discipline is the aura pair — Hatred scales cold damage via the Added Cold Damage Support conversion, Discipline pads the ES pool. Herald of Ice adds a second cold shatter explosion layer stacking on top of Profane Bloom. Ascendancy at this tier: Profane Bloom, Malediction, and Forbidden Power are all taken, with the fourth slot typically on Void Beacon for -15% cold resistance on nearby enemies.
EHP at 35.8k is driven by the hybrid life+ES pool plus 8128 evasion from the tree's Shadow transit area and an ES/Evasion body chest. The defensive layering is deliberately thin at this tier: ~2.8k life and ~3.8k ES as the two hit pools, freeze immunity from a Sapphire-or-Wanderlust slot, and Molten Shell on Cast when Damage Taken Support as a panic guard. Malediction contributes a passive 10% reduced damage from cursed enemies on top of the curse application — so wherever Frostbite lands, incoming damage is also capped. Armour at 1806 is basically cosmetic and evasion is doing the real phys-mitigation work. Chaos resist typically sits at -30% uncapped — this is the tier's exposure and why the Chaos Inoculation respec becomes attractive as gear improves.
The ramp-up spell playstyle with cursed-kill chains. Cast Blade Vortex two or three times to reach 10 blades, step into the pack, let the blades apply Frostbite via Hextouch Support, and watch Profane Bloom chain explode the whole screen. Flame Dash repositions between packs and the banked Unleash Support charges refill the stack without a full re-ramp. Herald of Ice shatters add a second explosion layer that cleans up frozen remnants. Bosses are slower — stack blades while strafing, re-cast after any forced movement, and rely on Malediction for incoming-damage reduction. The build feels fragile-but-fast: you die if you stop moving during phys burst phases, but any pack of trash vapourises on first contact.

Endgame L85–94
- The Chaos Inoculation respec is the defining pivot from early mapping: life drops to 1, the ES pool more than doubles to 8503, and chaos damage becomes a non-issue. EHP leaps from 35k to 130k, DPS climbs from 80k to 329k, and the defensive layering pivots from hybrid-pool scrambling to pure-ES management with a second armour layer from Determination.
- Swap in Shavronne's Wrappings to unlock The Coming Calamity or a pure-ES chest without hybrid armour/ES
- Buy a Watcher's Eye with Hatred + Discipline mods — the %ES while affected by Discipline rolls are a massive EHP multiplier
- Add a The Devouring Diadem helm to unlock Determination reservation via Eldritch Battery's interaction (advanced CI variant only)

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
At endgame the build commits fully to Chaos Inoculation — life: 1 with 8503 ES as the sole hit pool, every point of ES scaling hard through increased maximum energy shield on rares and Watcher's Eye mods. DPS climbs to 329k in the reference L94 build via a combination of full power-charge uptime from Forbidden Power, Void Beacon-reduced cold resistance on enemies, and spell-crit scaling through Doom Cast and the Shadow crit cluster. The main Blade Vortex link typically drops Unleash Support in favour of Increased Critical Strikes Support or Increased Critical Damage Support — the build now has enough base crit from the tree and Diamond Flask uptime to convert crit chance into reliable multiplier damage.
Hatred + Discipline + a third aura (typically Determination for the 14640 armour floor, or Clarity if mana is still tight) run under Charisma + Enlighten Support level 3. Herald of Ice stays in the setup — cold shatters remain the cleanup pass after Profane Bloom bursts. Malediction plus Hextouch Support applies Frostbite on every blade, and many endgame builds run a second curse on a blasphemy setup or on a Windscream/curse-on-hit ring — Malediction's "one additional curse" allowance is what makes the double-curse aura+blasphemy stack work. The ascendancy layout is the full Occultist package: Profane Bloom, Malediction, Forbidden Power, and Void Beacon or Vile Bastion depending on whether the build prioritises damage-reduction or ES-recharge.
130k EHP with Chaos Inoculation as the defensive foundation. The layers compound: 8503 ES as the full hit pool (chaos-immune), 14640 armour from Determination + a hybrid armour/ES chest, Molten Shell on Cast when Damage Taken Support consuming the armour pool as an on-hit burst guard. Void Beacon's chill and freeze nearby enemies by an extra 20% acts as soft crowd control — enemies in blade range attack slower. All three elemental resistances cap at 75% with 30–50 overcap for map mods. The evasion pool from early mapping is gone (15 evasion in the reference build — effectively zero), traded for pure ES + armour stacking. The remaining exposure is physical burst that bypasses armour mitigation — big slams still chunk, but Vaal Discipline's ES recharge start plus the Molten Shell guard cover the gap.
The ramp is now instant. Flame Dash into the pack, Blade Vortex hits 15 blades on the first cast thanks to power-charge cast speed from Forbidden Power, and Profane Bloom chain-explodes the whole screen in under a second. Bosses play like cast-and-stand — Hatred + Diamond Flask + stacked power charges push the build past the "need to reposition" threshold for most map bosses; you commit to the blade circle, let Discipline and Vaal Discipline hold the ES pool up, and ride Malediction's cursed-enemy damage reduction through the fight. The shift from early mapping is the loss of scramble — at L94 you can stand still on Shaper and cycle blades without dying, where at L81 you had to dance.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational scales both the ES pool (8503 to 9400) and the armour-layer (14640 to 37731) dramatically, pushing EHP from 130k to 274k via a doubled Determination-aura effect from Watcher's Eye mods, cluster-jewel crit multipliers, and Ashes of the Stars-powered gem levels. DPS rises to 444k — not the 2M+ range of pure glass-cannon builds, but sustainable while the character stands in screen-wide AoE.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
At L100 the build reaches 444k DPS and 274k EHP via the classic Occultist endgame formula: massive Watcher's Eye + Ashes of the Stars + cluster-jewel scaling. Ashes of the Stars in the amulet slot grants +1 to all skill gems and up to +30% gem quality, which pushes the main Blade Vortex link to effective gem-level 22 with maxed quality on every support. The main link typically runs Blade Vortex + Awakened Spell Echo Support + Awakened Controlled Destruction Support + Hextouch Support + Increased Critical Damage Support + Added Cold Damage Support or Awakened Added Cold Damage Support — the Mirage league's Exceptional Support Gems upgrade the first three in the list by roughly 10–15% each.
Watcher's Eye with Hatred-and-Discipline double-mod rolls is the linchpin — typical target lines are +8% of physical damage as extra cold while affected by Hatred, +% ES while affected by Discipline, and +critical strike chance while affected by Hatred. One jewel contributes both offensive and defensive scaling, which is why aspirational BV Occultist lists pay 15–25 divines for a double-mod Watcher's Eye over the cheap 1-mod version. The tree at this level reaches 122 points with Uber Lab, and typical cluster-jewel setups run two large + four medium clusters for Widespread Destruction, Doryani's Lesson, and Calamitous notables. Void Beacon remains the last ascendancy pick — or swap to Vile Bastion for ES-on-curse in a heavy-blasphemy setup.
274k EHP — roughly 8x the early-mapping value and over 2x endgame. The layers compound: 9400 ES base hit pool, 37731 armour from a dialed-in Determination + Molten Shell + granite flask uptime with Mageblood, 90% capped elemental resistances with 50–100 overcap, and 100% chaos immunity from Chaos Inoculation. The Squire-style block layering or a corrupted Aegis Aurora shield variant adds block + ES-on-block stacking on some builds — the reference aspirational pick doesn't run it (armour is doing the work there), but it's on the standard upgrade tree. Malediction's cursed-enemy damage reduction multiplies with Void Beacon's cold-ailment exposure to keep enemies effectively chilled + weakened during the blade-tick window. The remaining exposure is uncounterable mechanics — Sirus die beams, Maven memory-game drops, and hard-hitting phys slams that out-scale the armour mitigation curve.
Screens-worth-of-clear with near-invulnerability on anything under Uber tier. Flame Dash into a pack, Blade Vortex stacks to 20 blades in a single cast thanks to Exceptional Spell Echo + power-charge cast speed, and Profane Bloom detonates through offscreen packs via the Windscream-or-blasphemy double-curse application. Vaal Discipline drops on cooldown for full-pool ES recharge on boss entry. Bosses are trivial — stand on them, let the 90% res + 37k armour + Molten Shell + Mageblood-or-flask uptime absorb incoming hits, and the maintained 20-blade cold-conversion DPS eats through their life. The playstyle at this tier finally reaches the Occultist power fantasy: the screen dies around you while you move forward, curse detonations chain two screens ahead, and flask uptime is permanent enough that defensive management fades into the background.
