Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Caustic ArrowCaustic Arrow is the Ranger quest reward from Hillock — a strong cheap-bow clear skill that scales entirely with gem level. Mirage Archer Support from the Breaking Some Eggs quest gives you a free second archer firing alongside you. Grab Dash from Nessa as travel. Don't equip Blade Vortex yet — no stats, no supports, no gem.
- Act 2: run Caustic ArrowHerald of Agony unlocks at L16 but can be purchased from Yeena early if you want — it's your chaos-damage scaling layer, and every Virulence stack from poisons on hit adds damage. Despair from the Intruders in Black reward is your chaos curse. Bandits: kill all for +2 passives. Void Manipulation Support is a strong chaos multiplier for the 4-link.
- Act 3: run Caustic ArrowMalevolence from the Library quest is your main aura — it's a damage over time multiplier, which buffs both Caustic Arrow now and Blade Vortex's poisons later. Visit Siosa after clearing the Library — buy Blade Vortex and level it in a spare slot for the Act 4–5 swap. Lab 1: take Master Alchemist — flat 25% more elemental damage plus ailment immunity while flasked, permanent power spike. Buy a Atziri's Promise flask if you can afford one.
- Act 4–5 (L28 BV swap): run Blade VortexThe swap. Around L28 after Spell Echo Support is available, make Blade Vortex your main skill — you now have enough cast speed to hold 8+ blades. Void Manipulation stays in the link because it's +40% more chaos damage and scales poison directly. Keep Caustic Arrow as a backup for ranged bossing until blade count is reliable. Lab 2 at Kaom: take Nature's Adrenaline for cast speed + movement speed while flasked.
- Act 6–7 (poison scaling): run Blade VortexVile Toxins Support unlocks at L38 — slot immediately, it's the single biggest poison-scaling support in the game. Grace from the Act 6 quest gives a big evasion boost — Pathfinder benefits from both armour and evasion but Grace is stronger early. Pick up Noxious Strike on the passive tree around this level range (Shadow duelist area) — it gives chance-to-poison plus poison magnitude. Wire up Cast when Damage Taken + Immortal Call + Steelskin panic.
- Act 8–10 (Master Surgeon): run Blade VortexLab 3 in Act 9: take Master Surgeon — flask charges on crit and 20% chance to avoid physical damage from hits while flasked. Unbound Ailments Support joins the 5-link — it's a huge poison-magnitude multiplier. Pick up Dendrobate body armour in trade if you haven't — the "gain chaos damage equal to 25% of phys" and poison-damage-per-bow-ailment scaling make it the single best leveling chest for this archetype (ironic since you're not using a bow). Kitava: -30% res phases are safer than most builds since Master Alchemist covers ailments.
How leveling works
Blade Vortex Pathfinder is the poison-and-flask-stacker variant. Pathfinder's Master Alchemist grants 25% more elemental damage and immunity to elemental ailments while a flask is active, Nature's Boon auto-applies flasks and restores charges on reaching low life, and Master Surgeon restores flask charges on crit. With those three nodes and a full flask belt (Silver, Diamond, Jade, Quartz, Quicksilver), you're permanently flask-buffed in maps. The damage pivot is Blade Vortex scaled via physical + chaos — no elemental conversion, instead using Noxious Strike for poison and Herald of Agony to stack Virulence for the poison-damage multiplier.
At level-cap the build is a stationary 20-blade spinner where every blade both hits for physical damage and stacks a poison DoT, with the poisons stacking infinitely. The Virulence stack from Herald of Agony scales the poisons further, and a Despair curse layered on top adds another −25% enemy chaos resistance. The result is a tanky, flask-immune, ailment-immune mapper with strong bossing once poison stacks ramp up.
The campaign path runs Ranger-style through Acts 1–4: level as Caustic Arrow for Acts 1–2 clear (strong cheap bow skill that also foreshadows the poison/chaos theme), swap to Toxic Rain if you want or keep Caustic Arrow until the Blade Vortex transition at Act 4–5. Lab-pick order is Master Alchemist → Nature's Adrenaline → Master Surgeon → Nature's Boon. Master Alchemist first — the ailment immunity while-flasked plus the ele damage buff is the largest single power spike in the ascendancy.
Budget notes: Tabula Rasa for the 6-link, Goldrim for resistances through Act 8, and a cheap Atziri's Promise flask as soon as you can afford one (usually 1c) — phys-as-chaos and chaos damage gained are both multiplicative on poison damage. Save real currency for a +1 to Chaos Skill Gems wand crafted via Essence of Delirium, a Dendrobate body armour for the poison-damage-per-bow-ailment scaling (cheap week 1), and a Cospri's Will chest as a late-map upgrade for free curse-on-hit on a non-crit build.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: a +1 to Chaos Skill Gems wand crafted via Essence of Delirium is the target. Flat spell damage, cast speed, and chaos-damage-to-spells rolls on the wand are what matter — Blade Vortex is a spell and ignores weapon damage. Lifesprig carries the early acts cheaply.
- · Offhand: a shield with life, resists, and spell damage during acts. Late-game, dual-wield two crafted +1 chaos gem wands if you can afford them, or keep a shield for the defensive layer.
- · Body armour: Tabula Rasa through acts for the 6-link. At L66+, swap to Dendrobate — the gain-chaos-damage implicit and poison-damage-per-bow-ailment scaling make it the best leveling chest even though you don't use a bow (the ailments come from Herald of Agony's Virulence stacks and your own poisons). Endgame is Cospri's Will for free Despair application on a non-crit build, but that's multi-divine.
- · Helmet: life + resists during acts. The Blade Vortex helm enchant is one of the biggest slot upgrades — farm Merciless Lab at L75.
- · Gloves: life + resists + cast speed. Asenath's Gentle Touch is a meta endgame glove for the curse-on-kill + corpse-explode but unnecessary during leveling.
- · Boots: 30% movement + life + resists. Wanderlust for Act 1–3. Endgame, rare boots with life, resists, and 30% movement.
- · Rings: life, resists, and a flat-chaos-damage roll on at least one. No specific unique required, but Ming's Heart (chaos damage and chaos resist) is a fun dual-ring combo if you have two slots to spare.
- · Amulet: rare with life, cast speed, flat spell damage, and a resist. Anoint with Whispers of Doom for double-curse so you can stack Despair + a second curse like Temporal Chains.
- · Belt: Bisco's Leash is a cult favourite for this build — rampage scales damage and the +40% life effect is nice — but a rare stygian vise with life, resists, and an abyss jewel flat-chaos-to-spells is stronger and cheaper.
- · Flasks: FIVE utility flasks, because Pathfinder. Atziri's Promise for chaos + phys-as-chaos, Silver flask for Onslaught, Diamond flask for lucky crits (optional on non-crit builds but still strong for poison crit), Jade flask for evasion, Quicksilver for movement, Quartz flask for phasing + dodge. Drop the life flask — Nature's Boon + Master Surgeon handles sustain.
Weapon progression
Blade Vortex Pathfinder doesn't scale with weapon damage — every blade is a spell damage hit. What the weapon provides is spell damage, cast speed, chaos-damage-to-spells rolls, and gem levels. Vendor-recipe early: any magic wand + Amethyst Ring (chaos res implicit, useful for Act 2+) + Orb of Alteration rolls a chaos wand with spell damage. Lifesprig at L12 is the best budget option. Around L40, craft a +1 to Chaos Skill Gems wand via Essence of Delirium — a clean +1 chaos wand plus a shield carries you all the way to maps. The endgame option is either dual-wielding two crafted +1 chaos wands (more damage, no block) or keeping a single crafted +1 All Spell Gems wand paired with Cospri's Will for the free curse (best overall but expensive).
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! You DO NOT convert Blade Vortex damage to any element on this build. The phys-to-chaos comes from Atziri's Promise flask and Dendrobate chest, NOT from tree keystones. Do not allocate Avatar of Fire or use Call of the Brotherhood — they break the poison scaling entirely by locking out the physical half of the hit.
- ! Poison stacks infinitely — unlike ignite, which only uses the highest single hit. This means Blade Vortex's high hit rate is perfect for poison ramp, but the trade-off is that single-target boss damage is slow for the first 3–4 seconds as poisons stack. Pop Vaal Haste or Vaal Molten Shell during the ramp window rather than expecting instant boss phase clears.
- ! Pathfinder's flask-immunity layers from Master Alchemist only work while a utility flask is active. If you're standing still during a boss phase with no flask up, you lose the ailment immunity and the damage bonus at the same time. Nature's Boon (Uber Lab) solves this by auto-activating flasks — until you have it, manual flask discipline matters.
- ! Herald of Agony's Virulence stacks only build on poison application, and stacks decay over ~4 seconds when you stop hitting. In long boss phases with dodge windows, the stacks can drop to zero silently — you lose the crawler buff and the damage multiplier at the same moment you need them. Keep spinning through telegraphed attacks when possible; use Dash rather than full stops to reposition.
- ! Dendrobate's "poison deals X% more damage per bow ailment" sounds like it requires a bow, but "bow ailments" means "ailments caused by bow skills" — and since you're not using bow skills, you get ZERO bow-ailment stacks. The chest is still good for the implicit gain-chaos-as-phys, but don't assume you're getting the poison-magnitude bonus. Read the mod text carefully.
- ! 3.28 Mirage: Greater Spell Echo is the Exceptional Support upgrade from red maps. Greater Volley and Greater Multiple Projectiles do NOT apply to BV (not a projectile). Also: keep an eye out for poison-specific Exceptional Supports — if a "Greater Vile Toxins" exists at league release it will be the single biggest upgrade for this build.
- ! Chaos resistance on bosses matters a lot. Despair gives −44% at max curse level, but some pinnacle bosses have chaos-damage floors that clamp the actual reduction. Chaos penetration (via Unbound Ailments note: does NOT penetrate — that's a myth) is not natively available; your real options are Despair, Atziri's Promise, and the "reduces enemy chaos resistance" passive cluster near Witch.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Corrupt Ghost Dance into Supreme Ostentation via Impossible Escape (already socketed in the reference build) — the transformation removes attribute requirements from items, unlocking gear previously blocked by Dex/Str requirements
- Pick up Progenesis Amethyst flask — 80% meta share at aspirational — converts 25% of life loss to a 4-second DoT, smoothing burst into regen-eatable chunks
- Swap Unleash Support for Greater Unleash Support once you can afford a level 3 gem — the exceptional support's more-damage-on-release is the aspirational damage breakpoint

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Blade Vortex Pathfinder at early mapping is already running the signature unique stack that carries through all three tiers. Bino's Kitchen Knife is the main-hand dagger — 30% increased global crit chance + +17% global crit multi + +19% chaos resist, plus the defining mod: killing a poisoned enemy poisons nearby enemies AND regenerates 400 life/sec for the poison's duration. BV ticks every monster around the caster, every tick applies poison, every poisoned kill extends the chain and the life-regen tick. Foulborn Lightning Coil in the chest (50% phys from hits taken as lightning / 50% chaos taken as lightning) routes the most dangerous damage types into lightning, where Melding of the Flesh in a jewel socket caps all elemental resists at your highest max-res (84% at this tier from stacked max-res rolls). The 6-link chest runs Blade Vortex + Unbound Ailments Support + Unleash Support + Cruelty Support + Void Manipulation Support — a pure chaos-DoT scaling support bundle. Void Manipulation Support adds more chaos damage, Unbound Ailments Support increases poison damage and duration, Cruelty Support adds more damage-over-time against recently-hit enemies, and Unleash Support banks spell charges.
The Pathfinder ascendancy is doing the quiet heavy lifting. Master Distiller grants +25% chance to avoid elemental ailments and +25% increased elemental damage for each flask effect active — with four flasks up constantly it's a permanent multiplier. Nature's Adrenaline grants +10% increased action speed, 10% movement speed, 10% cast speed during flask effect, functionally permanent. Master Surgeon gives instant-recovery life flasks. Defiance of Destiny on the amulet is the signature life-survival unique — Gain 18% of missing unreserved life before being hit, which effectively means any incoming hit first heals you up by 18% of missing life, giving a second life bar. The Tides of Time belt adds +100% flask life/mana recovery and flasks gain charges every 3 seconds — it keeps the flask bar permanently active without needing to gain charges by hitting. The tree takes Master Distiller-adjacent poison notables (Toxic Strikes, Fatal Toxins) plus life + evasion nodes (Thick Skin, Reflexes).
EHP 42k with 3755 life + 62 energy shield. The defensive identity is layered: 89% spell suppression from Defiance of Destiny + Pathfinder tree routing, Melding of the Flesh caps all resists at 84% (overcapped), Foulborn Lightning Coil converts 50% of phys hits + 50% of chaos hits into lightning where the stacked +56% lightning resist overcap shreds it cheaply. Chaos resist is uncapped at 36% — that's the first thing to close before red maps. Ghost Dance keystone grants three stacks of 15% increased evasion + 20% movement speed per stack that refresh on hit, giving burst evasion in the middle of a fight. Nature's Reprisal adds poison damage scaling that feeds back into self-defence via the Bino's Kitchen Knife regen loop.
Ramp, stand, reposition. Shield Charge + Faster Attacks Support in the gloves hits into the pack, Blade Vortex stacks up to 10 over two or three casts (Unleash Support banks spell charges for the first burst), and poison applies on every tick. Bino's Kitchen Knife's kill-chain keeps the life-per-second ticking constantly, which means even without Defiance of Destiny healing, the character regenerates through incidental damage. Frostblink covers gap-close and telegraph-dodge, Automation fires Steelskin on damage for an extra phys-mitigation shield. Boss fights are positioning puzzles — stand in the overlap zone for maximum tick count, let poison ramp, use flasks through Master Distiller's effect for the damage multiplier during burn phases.

Endgame L85–94
- The core unique stack carries through unchanged — Bino's Kitchen Knife, Foulborn Lightning Coil, Defiance of Destiny, The Tides of Time, Melding of the Flesh, Unnatural Instinct, Impossible Escape, The Light of Meaning all stay. The endgame shift is support upgrades (Greater Unleash Support + Minion Pact Support now run instead of Unleash Support + Cruelty Support), and Ghost Dance gets corrupted into Supreme Ostentation via the Impossible Escape socketing. Mageblood belt replaces The Tides of Time — 4 permanent utility flasks at constant uptime.
- Pick up Progenesis Amethyst flask in one of the Mageblood slots — 25% of life loss from hits occurs over 4 seconds + the Pathfinder flask engine keeps it permanently active
- Grab a Femurs of the Saints weapon swap for minion damage scaling on the Raise Spectre + Minion Life Support chain — 2h weapon swap doubles the spectre levels for minion-damage scaling into Minion Pact Support
- Anoint Whispers of Doom for a second curse (already using Despair + Assassin's Mark or Conductivity — anointment lets both stay active)

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
DPS climbs to 515k at 36.4% crit chance. The 6-link adds Vaal Blade Vortex alongside the main skill for boss burst — the Vaal version stores stacks while the regular skill is active, and dumping the Vaal burst during pinnacle phases doubles instantaneous damage. Greater Unleash Support (83% meta share at endgame) is the key damage upgrade over base Unleash Support — the exceptional support releases spell charges as a single combined cast with a more-damage multiplier, which for a poison-stacking skill means every released burst applies poison simultaneously to everything in the ring. Minion Pact Support is the Pathfinder-adjacent damage support that nearly every BV variant runs — it converts minion life (from the Raise Spectre + Minion Life Support + Empower Support stack in the gloves) into a spell-damage multiplier for the main skill. Mageblood grants four permanent magic utility flasks, which combined with Pathfinder's Master Distiller means the damage multiplier from flask-effect scaling is always capped, and defensive flasks like Sin's Rebirth (ignite immunity + Unholy Might during effect) run continuously.
Supreme Ostentation (corrupted from Ghost Dance) removes attribute requirements from items, unlocking heavier gear without tree investment. Nature's Reprisal joins the Pathfinder ascendancy — adds +50% poison damage during flask effect plus +1% life regen per flask effect, effectively a permanent +4% life regen alongside the multiplier. The tree picks up Mind Drinker for mana leech (so Lifetap Support isn't necessary on movement) and Written in Blood for life-on-kill + life recovery scaling.
EHP 52k. 100% spell suppression (up from 89% at early mapping) closes the remaining spell-hit gap. All resists at 90% capped with 75% fire / 71% cold / 88% lightning overcap — Foulborn Lightning Coil's phys-taken-as-lightning now eats into +88% of overcap, which combined with Melding of the Flesh's shared-cap means physical hits are essentially neutered. Chaos resist caps at 70%. Life regen sits at ~1k/s from the Bino's Kitchen Knife kill-chain plus gear rolls — the character effectively regen-tanks any incidental damage. Pantheon is Brine King + Abberath for stun and burning-ground immunity.
Faster and deadlier than early mapping. Shield Charge traversal is constant, Blade Vortex stacks instantly off Greater Unleash Support banked charges, and Sin's Rebirth's Unholy Might during flask effect adds gain 30% phys as extra chaos on top of the poison scaling. Mageblood's four permanent utility flasks mean Sin's Rebirth stays active without manual flask-pressing, which is the main playstyle QoL upgrade at this tier. Bossing uses Vaal Blade Vortex burst during pinnacle phases for instant spike damage, otherwise the rotation is stand-on-top and maintain stacks.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational refines rather than pivots. The same unique skeleton persists — Bino's Kitchen Knife, Foulborn Lightning Coil, Defiance of Destiny, Melding of the Flesh, Impossible Escape, Unnatural Instinct, The Light of Meaning. The Tides of Time returns on the belt (replacing Mageblood — an atypical choice for this tier, flagged below) and Femurs of the Saints enters as a weapon swap for the spectre setup. Progenesis replaces the generic Amethyst flask.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
DPS reaches 641k at 7.8% crit chance — notably, this reference character has dropped the crit-stacking path entirely and runs on pure poison-DoT scaling. That's lower than the tier median's 500k DPS, but EHP comes in at 100k vs the median's 98k. The build has traded some damage for a slightly tankier shell. The 6-link chest runs Blade Vortex + Greater Unleash Support + Cruelty Support + Void Manipulation Support + Minion Pact Support + Unbound Ailments Support — the canonical aspirational support bundle. Void Manipulation Support is +49% more chaos damage, Cruelty Support adds +40% more damage-over-time against recently-hit enemies, Unbound Ailments Support increases poison damage and duration, Minion Pact Support scales off the spectre life pool. The spectre setup uses Femurs of the Saints on weapon swap for +2 to socketed minion gems + minion damage mods — swapping to the staff during boss setup activates the spectre buffs without needing to keep them on the main-hand rotation.
The flask loadout is the Pathfinder hallmark at aspirational. Progenesis (25% of life loss over 4s during effect) converts burst into regen-eatable damage — Pathfinder's flask effect scaling means the conversion duration is extended. Sin's Rebirth stays for Unholy Might during effect. The four Mageblood slots (if using Mageblood path — this specific reference uses The Tides of Time instead, atypical) would cover a Topaz, Amethyst, Granite, and Silver for full-time resist/armour/movement uptime. Master Distiller + Nature's Reprisal + Nature's Adrenaline + Master Surgeon is the full Pathfinder ascendancy set.
EHP 101k. Resist wall holds — all elementals at 90% capped, chaos resist at 77% capped, spell suppression at 100%. Life 4050 + Defiance of Destiny's missing-life conversion means effective life on incoming hits is much larger than the raw pool. 41% physical damage reduction from tree routing and 3 endurance charges. Life regen at 2k/s covers sustain. Progenesis's DoT conversion is the main burst-smoothing layer. The single biggest gap is chaos DoT from uncounterable map mods — at 77% chaos res, repeated chaos ticks can still grind the life pool down.
Settled, smooth, unhurried. The build has hit its equilibrium — every ascendancy bonus is live, every flask is permanently active, every piece of gear does what it's supposed to do. Map clear is charge → stack → detonate → shield-charge-to-next-pack, with Bino's Kitchen Knife's kill-chain sustaining blades across the entire map. Bossing is stand-on-top, maintain 10 blades, cycle Vaal Blade Vortex during burst phases, and let poison ramp. The Pathfinder flask engine means there's no real downtime — you're always in "flask effect active" with +25% increased elemental damage + 10% action speed + 1% life regen per flask. This is the tier where the build hits its power-fantasy pocket.
