Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Frost BladesFrost Blades from Nessa after Hillock — strong cheap-weapon clear with projectile spread. Grab Leap Slam from Mud Flats — it stays as your travel skill through the entire build AND eventually replaces half the Cyclone kit for gap-closing onto packs. Ancestral Call Support doubles the target count on melee attacks, huge early. Don't equip Cyclone — you don't have the gem or the stats.
- Act 2: run SunderSunder is the Duelist quest reward from the Sharp and Cruel chain at Merveil — swap immediately. Melee Physical Damage Support slots as soon as you hit a 4-link. Warlord's Mark from Bandits (kill all for +2 passives) gives life leech + endurance charges — a core layer for the whole campaign. Ancestral Protector totem from Sharp and Cruel is the strongest boss damage boost of the acts.
- Act 3: run SunderPride from the Library quest reward becomes your main aura — the phys damage taken by nearby enemies is one of the highest multipliers for any phys build. Fortify Support on Leap Slam keeps fortify permanent between packs. Lab 1 in Act 3: take Worthy Foe — "enemies take 20% increased Damage" is the biggest Champion damage pick and always goes first. Visit Siosa after clearing Library to buy Cyclone and level it in a spare slot for the Act 4–5 transition.
- Act 4–5 (L28 Cyclone swap): run CycloneThe swap. Around L28 once Infused Channelling Support is available, swap to Cyclone. Infused Channelling gives both damage and physical damage reduction while channeling — it's the single best support on the skill outside of Multistrike Support (which does NOT work on Cyclone). Add Herald of Purity for sentinels + flat phys damage. Lab 2 at Kaom: take First to Strike, Last to Fall — permanent impale on full-life enemies, plus Adrenaline on low life is a huge panic layer.
- Act 6–7 (Fortitude): run CycloneDetermination unlocks at the Act 6 Brine King quest — slot immediately, Champion's 200% increased Armour from Unstoppable Hero later multiplies off Determination's armour base. Impale Support joins the 5-link once you hit L31 — it's the build-defining support and makes every Cyclone hit leave an impale stack that fires again for 10% of original damage. Wire Cast when Damage Taken + Immortal Call + Steelskin panic chain.
- Act 8–10 (Fortitude): run CycloneLab 3 in Act 9: take Fortitude — fortify is now permanent whether or not you have Fortify Support in the link, freeing that support slot in the main link for something else. At L60, consider swapping Fortify Support OUT of Leap Slam and replacing with Faster Attacks Support since Fortitude handles the fortify layer. If going pure phys for 6-link, slot Brutality Support (zeroes non-phys damage but +50% more phys is worth it) — drop Herald of Purity's non-phys contribution from your mental math accordingly. Cap 75% resist on all three elements before maps.
How leveling works
Cyclone Champion is the tank-and-impale archetype — the most comfortable melee leveling experience in the game once the core is online. Champion's ascendancy stacks fortify permanently via Fortitude, adds a huge impale layer through First to Strike, Last to Fall, and gives 200% increased Armour while having fortify via Unstoppable Hero. The result at level-cap is a 90% phys-reduction mapper with permanent fortify, aura buffs to party via Inspirational, and enough DPS from impale overlap to clear every pinnacle boss in the game.
Cyclone is available as a L28 gem (NOT level 1 — the campaign leads with Sunder or Frost Blades until the gem is unlocked). The campaign path runs Duelist-style: level as Frost Blades Act 1, swap to Sunder at Merveil, run Sunder through Acts 2–5, then transition into Cyclone at L28 once Infused Channelling Support is available. Lab-pick order is Worthy Foe → First to Strike, Last to Fall → Fortitude → Unstoppable Hero (or Inspirational if you're in a group). Worthy Foe is the single highest damage multiplier in the ascendancy and always goes first.
Champion's impale layer scales with attack speed, weapon physical damage, and generic more damage multipliers — which is why Impale Support and Pulverise Support end up in the main link alongside Melee Physical Damage Support. Critically, Multistrike Support does NOT work on Cyclone (channeled skill) — use Infused Channelling Support for defense + damage, or swap in Rage Support / Brutality Support for pure damage once you have a 6-link.
Budget notes: Tabula Rasa for the 6-link, Goldrim for resistances through Act 8. No specific leveling uniques are mandatory, but a Kaom's Primacy 2H mace (week-1 cheap) or Hezmana's Bloodlust 2H axe is a strong mid-act weapon upgrade. Save real currency for a high-pDPS crafted 2H weapon (Essence of Rage or Essence of Horror on an ilvl 82 Vaal Greataxe is the meta craft), a Saffell's Frame or Lioneye's Remorse shield if going 1H-and-shield, and a proper 6-link chest for maps.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: a 2H axe or mace with high physical DPS, or a 1H + shield setup if you prefer defense. 2H is the default for pure-damage, 1H-and-shield for pure-tank with Lioneye's Remorse. Vendor-recipe (magic 2H + Blacksmith's Whetstone + Armourer's Scrap quality) through acts, then Essence of Rage on an ilvl 82 Vaal Greataxe for the endgame craft.
- · Offhand (if 1H): a rare shield with life, armour, resists, and a +1 to Socketed Melee Gems craft. Lioneye's Remorse is a strong budget pick for the massive armour + physical damage reduction.
- · Body armour: Tabula Rasa carries the 6-link through acts. Post-maps, a crafted 6-link armour or Kaom's Heart for the +500 flat life (but it locks you out of any 6-link chest mod). Belly of the Beast is the meta leveling/early-map chest for its doubled-flask-effect and 40% increased life.
- · Helmet: life + resists during acts. The Cyclone helm enchant ("X% increased Cyclone Attack Speed" or "+X% increased Cyclone Damage") is one of the biggest slot upgrades — farm Merciless Lab at L75. Abyssus is the classic "more damage, more damage taken" meta helm but skip during leveling (you take 50% more phys damage from hits and will die).
- · Gloves: life + resists + attack speed. Haemophilia is interesting if going bleed, Slitherpinch for phys as chaos.
- · Boots: 30% movement + life + resists. Wanderlust for Act 1–3. Endgame, rare boots with life, resists, movement speed, and +1 to Socketed Gems for the CWDT chain.
- · Rings: life, resists, flat-phys-add-to-attacks. Mark of the Elder + Mark of the Shaper combo is an endgame option but unnecessary during leveling.
- · Amulet: rare with life, flat phys, and a resist. Anoint with Soul of Steel (armour + resists) or Constitution (life pool).
- · Belt: The Retch (leech damage becomes damage to enemy) is a strong mid-game option for the life-leech layer. Endgame stygian vise with life, resists, and abyss jewel flat-phys.
- · Flasks: bubbling life flask with "of Staunching" (bleed), granite with "of Iron Skin", quicksilver for movement, silver for Onslaught, Lion's Roar for the phys damage + knockback spike during bosses.
Weapon progression
Cyclone Champion scales directly with weapon physical DPS — every spin is an attack that uses the weapon's damage. This is the core difference from spell builds: the weapon IS the damage. Vendor-recipe (magic 2H + Blacksmith's Whetstone + Armourer's Scrap quality upgrades) keeps you fed through Acts 1–5. A Hezmana's Bloodlust at L40 is a cheap mid-act 2H axe if you find one, Kaom's Primacy at L46 for mace. Once you commit to Cyclone, prioritise a 2H axe or mace with flat phys roll, high attack speed, and physical % roll. The endgame target is a crafted Vaal Greataxe with three physical prefixes via Essence of Rage/Horror and a "cannot roll attack mods" bench craft, pushing ~700+ pDPS. Starforge or Atziri's Disfavour are aspirational upgrades once you're farming red maps consistently — multi-divine each. Get to maps with anything, then shop the trade site for the first real upgrade.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Cyclone is a channeled skill — Multistrike Support does NOT work on it. Do not slot it no matter how tempting the DPS tooltip looks. The tooltip may show the damage increase, but the animation is not compatible with channeling and the support is ignored at runtime. Use Infused Channelling Support for defense + damage, or Rage Support / Brutality Support for damage-only.
- ! Cyclone attack speed scales with weapon attack speed, +% attack speed on gear, and Pulverise Support's bonus. A 1.5 APS weapon is much worse than a 1.8 APS weapon for Cyclone specifically because of how many attack "ticks" you lose per spin. Always compare weapons on the product of phys damage × attack speed, not either number alone.
- ! Fortitude gives permanent fortify WITHOUT needing Fortify Support. Once you take it in Lab 3, DROP Fortify Support from Leap Slam — it's wasted. Replace with Faster Attacks Support for faster gap-closing. Players often forget this and run doubled-up fortify through the whole endgame.
- ! Champion's impale layer stacks multiplicatively with Worthy Foe's 20% increased damage taken. Impale re-hits at 10% of original damage, 5 stacks max. Impale Support in the main link + the tree's impale nodes pushes per-hit damage ~80% higher than the raw tooltip — PoB accounts for this correctly, in-game tooltip does not.
- ! 3.28 Mirage: the Exceptional Support gems for this build are Greater Melee Physical Damage and Greater Impale — they drop from red maps and replace Melee Physical Damage Support and Impale Support in the main link. Greater Spell Echo, Greater Volley, and Greater Multiple Projectiles do NOT apply to Cyclone (not a spell, not a projectile) — don't slot them into the main link by mistake.
- ! Physical reflect map mods can be lethal under Brutality Support + max-impale stacking — you deal a huge spike of phys damage per hit, reflect returns 18% to you. Roll 99% phys reduction via armour + endurance charges + Lion's Roar before engaging a phys-reflect map, or reroll the map.
- ! Unstoppable Hero's 200% increased Armour is a huge multiplier, but armour has diminishing returns against large hits — a 30k armour pool mitigates trash hits well but still takes significant damage from pinnacle-boss slams. Don't assume you can face-tank Shaper slams — use Vaal Molten Shell windows for the big hits, armour handles the rest.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Upgrade the Foulborn Uul-Netol's Kiss roll tier — endgame/aspirational copies hit 291-332% phys vs this reference's 243% phys, and the warcry CDR can reach 605% at the top end
- Pick up Ancestral Vision Viridian Jewel — the spell-suppression-applies-to-avoid-elemental-ailments conversion is foundational for the aspirational defensive stack
- Build toward the Watcher's Eye with Pride mods (+57% phys damage, +chance to deal double damage, impales last 2 additional hits) — the aura scaling unlocks the endgame DPS ceiling

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The damage engine is a General's Cry mirage-warrior loop — the character channels Cyclone which triggers Void Shockwave Support via Cast while Channelling Support, while General's Cry warcries summon mirage copies of the caster that each instantly cast Lacerate of Butchering. Foulborn Uul-Netol's Kiss Vaal Axe is the weapon that makes this work — 243% increased physical damage, the base mod curse enemies with Vulnerability on hit, exerted attacks knock enemies back, and the Foulborn-corruption line 500% increased warcry cooldown recovery rate. That CDR multiplier shreds General's Cry's 8-second base cooldown down to effectively 1.3 seconds, so mirage warriors spawn in near-constant rotation. Each mirage attack inherits your character's critical strike chance, modifier, and weapon rolls — combined with Marylene's Fallacy on the neck (+280% global crit multi / -48% less crit chance), the warriors crit for 4.4x multi on every hit.
The 6-link body armour (The Fourth Vow, Devout Chainmail) runs Lacerate of Butchering + General's Cry + Melee Physical Damage Support + Brutality Support + Pulverise Support + Autoexertion Support. Autoexertion Support is the warcry-support that automates the General's Cry rotation — every 6 seconds or so it fires the socketed warcry for free without manual button-press. Brutality Support gives +59% more physical damage at the cost of removing elemental and chaos damage entirely — perfect for a build that converts to pure physical. The helmet runs a 3-aura stack (Determination + Pride + Flesh and Stone) with Enlighten Support for reservation efficiency. Screams of the Desiccated belt grants Diamond Shrine buff while affected by no flasks (permanent +200% crit multi effectively) thanks to Mageblood-less flask economy.
The tree commits hard to physical / melee / warcry scaling — Master of the Arena, Spirit of War, Destroyer, The Unseen Hand for warcry scaling, Golem's Blood + Bloodless for life. The Champion ascendancy takes Inspirational (banner effect), Worthy Causes (banner reservation + bonuses), and Worthy Foe (10% increased damage taken by marked target / cannot evade).
EHP 33k at the reference L84. 60% physical damage reduction from 17k armour + Determination. The defensive identity is already clear: The Fourth Vow's armour also applies to chaos damage taken from hits converts the normally-hard-to-mitigate chaos hits into armour-eaten damage. The Formless Flame helmet grants -150 Fire damage taken from hits (a massive flat reduction) and armour is increased by overcapped fire resistance, which scales with +7% fire overcap at this tier. Divine Flesh (transformed from Pain Attunement via Glorious Vanity bathed in Xibaqua's blood) makes you take 50% of elemental damage as chaos, which combined with 80% chaos resist and the Fourth Vow armour-applies-to-chaos clause means elemental hits become chaos-via-armour — a defensive loop that layers on top of the resist wall. Unwavering Stance grants stun immunity (essential for a channelled movement-skill rotation), and Versatile Combatant converts attack block to spell block at 50%. Life sits at 3639 — low, but the Fourth Vow-armour-chaos loop covers the exposure.
Deliberate, thumping, methodical. The rotation is walk into pack with Cyclone, Autoexertion Support fires General's Cry automatically, mirage warriors spawn and all attack simultaneously with Lacerate of Butchering, the screen explodes. The Writhing Jar flasks (three of them here at early mapping) summon Writhing Worms that act as sacrificial targets for Desecrate-corpse-based mechanics and boss rotation — a quirky early-mapping detail. Bossing is stand-on-top and let the warcry cadence run — the mirage fleet is the DPS, not the channeled cyclone.

Endgame L85–94
- Endgame refines the early-mapping skeleton — Foulborn Uul-Netol's Kiss upgrades to a 291% phys / 525% warcry CDR roll, The Fourth Vow and The Formless Flame stay, Cyclone (base, no longer Vaal) replaces Vaal Cyclone as the channel. Marylene's Fallacy stays as the neck unique. The big additions are a fourth banner stack (Defiance Banner + War Banner + Dread Banner) in the gloves, Iron Reflexes as a new keystone (converting all evasion to armour), and Phase Run + Automation Support in the boots for stealthy traversal.
- Pick up Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocating Master of Metal (Juggernaut crossover) — the ascendancy transplant grants +3 max endurance charges, +4% phys damage reduction per endurance charge
- Upgrade the weapon swap from Maloney's Mechanism to a rare Grinning Fetish weapon-swap for spell-trigger-on-attack setups
- Craft a Sol Band-style Fugitive Ring with +2% max chaos resist + cannot roll non-chaos damage types + 15% of damage taken recouped as life — the aspirational ring template

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
DPS explodes to 43M at 100% crit chance with 4.74x multi — a 13x jump over early mapping driven almost entirely by the Foulborn Uul-Netol's Kiss tier scaling and the triple-banner stack. The three banners each contribute a different multiplier: Defiance Banner (+armour, -enemy accuracy), War Banner (+accuracy, +phys damage vs marked), Dread Banner (+impale chance / +impale effect). Watcher's Eye at endgame grants +57% phys damage while using Pride and impales last 2 additional hits while using Pride — the impale-extension is the largest single-target multiplier in the build, because each Lacerate of Butchering hit stacks impale, and the extra hits from the Watcher's Eye mod turn 5 impales into 7 impales with huge compounding damage.
Iron Reflexes (converts all evasion to armour) is the armour breakpoint — combined with 37.7k armour from tree + The Fourth Vow + The Formless Flame's fire-overcap-to-armour scaling (+184% fire overcap at this tier), physical damage reduction hits 87%. Champion of the Cause is added on the tree for +50% mana reservation efficiency scaling, enabling the quadruple-aura stack. Cluster jewels lean into Devastator + Martial Prowess + Vicious Skewering (large cluster) and Lead By Example + Mob Mentality (medium cluster) for banner/warcry scaling.
EHP 51k. 87% physical damage reduction is the main story — 37.7k armour + Determination + The Fourth Vow's 374% armour (well, its armour-and-ES implicit scaling) + Iron Reflexes converting evasion. 92% spell suppression is fully capped. Resistances cap at 77-80% with +184% fire / +184% cold / +170% lightning overcap — the fire overcap feeds The Formless Flame's armour scaling for a compounding defence. Divine Flesh + 80% chaos res + The Fourth Vow's armour-applies-to-chaos means the 50% of elemental taken as chaos damage is cheap to tank. Unwavering Stance + Versatile Combatant persist.
The build hits its groove. Phase Run + Automation Support means you auto-stealth while moving between packs for free crit scaling. Autoexertion Support fires General's Cry automatically on cooldown, mirage warriors spawn continuously, and the triple-banner stack means every hit has maximum impale + damage + accuracy scaling. Eagle Dash boots drop Brittle Ground while moving — adds +crit chance against brittle enemies, a small but consistent layer. The playstyle is melee armour-stacker power fantasy: walk forward, warcry, pack dies, repeat.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational is a refinement of endgame — same Foulborn Uul-Netol's Kiss (now 332% phys / 605% warcry CDR), same The Fourth Vow, same The Formless Flame, same Marylene's Fallacy, same Screams of the Desiccated. The keystone pivot is Divine Flesh now transforms from Resolute Technique (instead of Pain Attunement) via Glorious Vanity, and Iron Reflexes is dropped from the tree. Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh now allocate Master of Metal (Juggernaut crossover) for endurance-charge scaling.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
DPS settles at 13.6M at 100% crit chance with 5.78x multi — the crit multi jump from 4.74 → 5.78 at aspirational is where most of the tier's damage growth sits, driven by Marylene's Fallacy's +345% crit multi roll plus rare ring/ring crit-multi rolls. Note that the reference character's DPS is LOWER than the endgame reference — this is because the aspirational character is a pure tank variant (the balanced-score is weighted toward EHP) rather than a pure DPS variant. The tier median DPS is 1.3M but the reference character hits 13.6M, so the variant's actual ceiling is higher than the reference displays.
The 6-link body armour (The Fourth Vow with +2 socketed AoE gems + +2 socketed minion gems) runs Lacerate of Butchering + General's Cry + Autoexertion Support + Pulverise Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Brutality Support — the canonical aspirational setup. Sibyl's Lament on ring 2 grants 100% physical hit damage from you cannot be reflected — the reflect-immunity is essential for an armour stacker that otherwise one-shots itself against phys-reflect rares. Sol Band Fugitive Ring on slot 1 grants +2% max chaos resist / 15% damage recouped as life / +25% crit multi — the defensive-offensive hybrid that defines the Champion aspirational ring slot.
EHP 14k on paper for this specific reference (the character was captured mid-transition with resistances not fully capped — -9% cold resist and 39% fire resist indicates an unfinished gear swap), but the tier median sits at 64k EHP. At the true aspirational ceiling: 79% physical damage reduction still from 43k armour, 75/75/75 elemental capped via Melding of the Flesh-style shared-cap scaling (not on this specific build, but the tier's 93% chaos res coverage + Divine Flesh routing makes resists less critical than on other variants). 82% chaos resist sustained. The Fourth Vow's chaos-to-armour + Divine Flesh + Sibyl's Lament reflect immunity form the full defensive loop. Horticultural Fulgurite Tincture flask adds 36% chance to shock with melee + 48% increased shock effect + 47% melee crit multi during effect — the tincture-flask-slot variant of the usual boss-phase crit flask.
The endgame Champion power fantasy. Phase Run + Automation Support provides permanent stealth-on-move, Autoexertion Support cycles General's Cry on cooldown, the triple-banner stack is permanently active, and the mirage warriors clear the screen in front of you while you walk behind. Foulborn Uul-Netol's Kiss's 605% warcry CDR means the General's Cry cooldown is effectively sub-1-second, so mirage waves chain continuously. Pinnacle bossing uses the four Writhing Jar flasks to summon sacrificial worms for Desecrate-based boss rotations (Sirus, Maven). The build is the meta Champion at its most refined — tank, walk, warcry, win.
