Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Frost BladesBuy Frost Blades from Nessa after Hillock — Elementalist starts Int but the skill works on any 1H melee weapon and its projectile overlap deletes packs. Leap Slam from Nessa as travel skill. Onslaught Support from the Brutus quest. Pick up Flame Dash as a backup mobility if the terrain is tight.
- Act 2: run Frost BladesPick up Herald of Ice from Yeena — it shatters frozen corpses and layers on the cold conversion theme you are building toward. Added Cold Damage Support in the 4-link. Slot a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin for panic defense. Take "Kill all" bandits for +2 passives.
- Act 3: run Frost BladesHatred from the Library quest reward becomes your main aura — massive cold-damage multiplier for a converting build. Keep Clarity at low level for mana sustain. Ancestral Protector totem for bosses. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support replaces Added Cold Damage Support once you hit L38. Lab 1 in Act 3: Shaper of Storms if going lightning, Heart of Destruction if going cold — both are valid openers.
- Act 4–5: run CycloneCyclone gem unlocks at L24 — buy it from Lady Dialla as the Kaom reward. Slot it into the 4-link with Infused Channelling Support (damage + physical mitigation while spinning), Elemental Damage with Attacks Support, and Hypothermia Support (cold-conversion damage multiplier when enemy is chilled — Herald of Ice and Hatred both help keep enemies chilled). Do NOT slot Multistrike Support — it does nothing on channeled skills.
- Act 6–8: run CycloneIf you are pivoting lightning for the endgame (Inpulsa shock-explode variant), add Wrath from the Act 6–8 area — it scales lightning-converted hits hard and enables Mastermind of Discord's exposure once you grab the node. Inspiration Support at L31 gives mana sustain plus elemental penetration — critical support for any elemental channeled build. Vaal Ancestral Warchief replaces the regular totem. Lab 2 in Act 6: Mastermind of Discord (exposure from your Heralds) is the build-defining pickup if you run Herald-based conversion.
- Act 9–10: run CycloneAt 5-link, swap the weakest damage support for Lightning Penetration Support (lightning pivot) or Cold Penetration Support (cold pivot). Penetration outscales raw damage supports once enemies have map-level resists. Layer in a second Herald if your reservation allows it — Herald of Thunder pairs beautifully with lightning conversion. Lab 3 in Act 9: Heart of Destruction — Cyclone is always moving, so the "more damage while moving" tier is effectively permanent uptime. Cap 75% resist on all three elements before entering maps.
How leveling works
Cyclone on an Elementalist trades the Slayer's physical-leech identity for full elemental conversion and elemental penetration. The build typically runs Inpulsa's Broken Heart (lightning shock explosions) or The Brass Dome on a Cyclone that converts the attack's physical damage to lightning or cold via weapon mods, a converting body armour like Dreamfeather's ecosystem, or Call of the Brotherhood rings. Your damage scales with weapon DPS, attack speed, area of effect, and elemental % modifiers — very different from pure-phys Slayer.
The Elementalist ascendancy you are grabbing is Shaper of Storms (lightning always shocks at minimum effect), Shaper of Flames if you pivot fire, Mastermind of Discord for penetration and exposure while using Heralds, and Heart of Destruction for stacking damage while moving. Cyclone is always moving, so Heart of Destruction's "while on killstreak" effect is effectively permanent — it is the build's signature damage notable.
Cyclone's gem is L24 and is bought from Lady Dialla as your Act 4 reward (or Siosa's library in Act 3 once you visit), so you level as a generic melee attacker with Frost Blades or Molten Strike through Acts 1–3, then pivot to Cyclone at Act 4–5. The Elementalist has weak innate melee defenses (no armour on the class start), so you compensate with mana reservation auras plus the usual Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin panic setup. Entering maps capped at 75% resist on all three elements is non-negotiable because you have no armour cushion to fall back on.
Critical gem-compatibility rule: Cyclone is channeled. Multistrike Support does NOT work with it — the support only affects non-channeled melee attacks. Use Infused Channelling Support, Inspiration Support, Elemental Damage with Attacks Support, and Hypothermia Support (cold conversion) or Lightning Penetration Support (lightning conversion) in its place.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: any 1H or 2H with high elemental damage or "added lightning/cold damage to attacks" while leveling. Vendor-recipe rares are fine. The unique Dreamfeather (evasion-scaling sword) or rare wands with attack speed + added elemental damage are common endgame picks.
- · Body armour: a Tabula Rasa for campaign if you can trade for one — the guaranteed 6-link beats any rare during leveling. Endgame pivots to Inpulsa's Broken Heart (shock-explode clear) or a rare 6-link ES/armour hybrid with life + resists.
- · Helmet/gloves/boots: life and resists first. Elementalist has no innate armour, so the resist cap at 75% resist must come from gear. Goldrim covers the hardest leveling resist gap cheaply.
- · Rings/amulet: life + resists + attribute fix-ups. Call of the Brotherhood rings enable 50% physical-to-cold conversion and are a cheap core for the cold pivot.
- · Belt: Heavy Belt or Leather Belt with life and elemental resists. No unique belts are required during leveling.
- · Flasks: a life flask with "of Staunching" (bleed removal), a quicksilver, a granite, a silver flask once available, and a diamond flask. Elementalist has no leech to recover from chip damage, so flask uptime matters more than on a Slayer.
- · Jewels: 1-2 abyss jewels with life + elemental damage while holding shield, or cluster jewels with elemental damage notables once you hit yellow maps.
Weapon progression
Use vendor-recipe 1H or 2H weapons with any flat physical or elemental roll through Acts 1–5. Once Cyclone is online, prioritise attack speed + elemental damage over pure physical DPS — every point of weapon elemental damage is multiplied by Hatred, Wrath, Elemental Damage with Attacks Support, and the class-side % elemental modifiers, so elemental weapons outscale physical ones on this build. The long-term target is a rare elemental sword, axe, or wand with "added lightning/cold damage to attacks", "% increased attack speed", and either a crit roll (for crit variants) or a second elemental prefix. Oro's Sacrifice is a tempting ignite-Cyclone endgame weapon but pushes you into a completely different build path — only go that route if you have committed to an ignite Elementalist from the start. None of these are leveling priorities; get to maps first.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Multistrike Support does NOT work with Cyclone — Cyclone is channeled, and Multistrike Support only affects non-channeled melee attacks. Slotting it loses you a support slot for zero gain. Use Infused Channelling Support, Inspiration Support, Hypothermia Support, or Lightning Penetration Support instead.
- ! Elementalist has no innate armour on the class start — you will feel squishier than a Slayer in the acts. Invest in life nodes early on the tree (Constitution, Heart of the Warrior) and keep a Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin panic link running from Act 1 onward.
- ! Capping 75% resist on all three elements before entering maps is non-negotiable — you have no physical-damage mitigation layer to fall back on. Goldrim is the cheapest way to get most of the way there during leveling.
- ! Heart of Destruction scales the "while on killstreak" / movement-based damage — Cyclone is always moving, so this is effectively permanent uptime. Do NOT skip it for more raw damage nodes in the Act 9 Lab.
- ! Hatred + Wrath + Herald of Ice + Herald of Thunder will not all fit under default mana reservation — plan your reservation budget around which conversion path you picked (cold = Hatred + Herald of Ice, lightning = Wrath + Herald of Thunder). Running all four requires reservation reduction from a mastery or Enlighten Support.
- ! 3.28 introduces Exceptional Support gems (replacing Awakened) — several of them scale elemental channeled skills better than the base versions. Check the current support list on poedb.tw before committing to 6-link gems, especially the Exceptional replacements for Inspiration Support and Hypothermia Support.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Save currency for The Fulcrum — the build's identity is locked behind this single unique, and everything before it is scaffolding
- Pick up Devoto's Devotion early for the 16% attack speed + 20% move speed + Mercury Footprints combo — it carries from this tier straight into aspirational
- Run Blood and Sand in blood stance and Hatred + Precision reserved under Eternal Blessing once mana room allows

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
This tier's reference pick is atypical — the L84 character slotted at the median of the ladder cut is actually a Summon Flame Golem of Hordes Elementalist, not a Cyclone character. The 6-link in Vis Mortis hosts Summon Flame Golem of Hordes + Greater Spell Echo + Greater Volley + Minion Damage Support + Congregation + Invert the Rules, the helmet is The Dark Monarch (doubles max golems), the amulet is Replica Dragonfang's Flight with +3 to Summon Flame Golem, and the jewel bag is thirteen Primordial Harmony Cobalts feeding Liege of the Primordial and The Anima Stone. The tree runs Golem Commander, Shaper of Storms (from the ascendancy), and Mastermind of Discord. It's a golem build wearing a Cyclone tag because the skill technically exists on the character somewhere — call it what it is.
The real Cyclone Elementalist identity doesn't appear until endgame when The Fulcrum lands and the conversion engine turns on. If you're playing the "Cyclone Elementalist" plan at early mapping in spirit rather than copying this specific reference, the move is to rush Devoto's Devotion for attack speed + move speed, league-start with a converted-phys Cyclone in a 5-link using whatever staff you find, and treat Shaper of Storms as the early damage-through-shock vehicle. The 3.28 Exceptional Support Void Shockwave Support is already on the shortlist once you can drop the gem.
The L84 reference's defensive sheet is the golem build's, not a Cyclone build's: 66k EHP from 26.9k armour, 70% physical damage reduction, 77% block + 26% spell block (Aegis Aurora + Bastion of Elements + Aggressive Bastion stacking), and all elemental resists comfortably over cap at 78/83/78 with 75% chaos. Aegis Aurora on the off-hand recovers 2% of armour as ES on block, which at 26.9k armour is a ~540 ES refill per block — huge passive sustain. The actual Cyclone-plan early defence leans on the same Aegis Aurora block shell, with Zealot's Oath converting life regen into ES regen once it comes online later.
For the reference character the playstyle is summon-and-walk: Summon Flame Golem of Hordes with Greater Volley makes 6+ golems at once, Convocation via Automation keeps them stacked on top of the player, and they shred packs while the player runs around with Flame Dash. For a player actually planning a Cyclone Elementalist, this tier is the "get to maps, level Cyclone in a 4-link" phase — walk forward holding left-click, let Shaper of Storms's shock do early screen-clear, and save currency for the The Fulcrum + Devoto's Devotion pivot.

Endgame L85–94
- The Cyclone Elementalist finally becomes itself at endgame. The Fulcrum lands in the weapon slot, Devoto's Devotion keeps its helmet spot, Inpulsa's Broken Heart appears in the chest, and Winterweave + the chill-reversal loop plug in. Four golems still follow you around — Liege of the Primordial is still the ascendancy — but they're now a side channel feeding damage buffs, not the main skill.
- Roll a Lethal Pride seed under Kaom to pick up crit multi + life on the Duelist cluster — 34% of endgame and 80% of aspirational builds run this
- Hunt a Watcher's Eye with Hatred cold pen + phys-as-cold to plug into the Winterweave cold-damage loop
- Pick up Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocating a damage-scaling notable — 48% of aspirational builds run this combo for free ascendancy power

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The Fulcrum is the engine. The Ezomyte Staff converts 14%/31%/46% of physical to fire/cold/lightning and rolls 174% increased Physical Damage, meaning every Cyclone tick launches as pure elemental. Damage Penetrates 8% Elemental Resistances while Chilled + Elemental Damage with Hits is Lucky while Shocked are the two signature lines — the build self-inflicts chill (via Winterweave's reversed-chill loop) and self-inflicts shock (via Shaper of Winter + the golem support stack), so both bonuses run continuously.
The 6-link in a rare Ezomyte Staff 6-socket setup runs Cyclone + Pulverise Support + Volatility Support + Trinity Support + Infused Channelling Support + Void Shockwave Support. Trinity Support is the critical pairing with The Fulcrum's roughly-equal-tri-element conversion — it pays out more elemental damage as you keep roughly balanced Resonance across fire/cold/lightning, which the staff's conversion spread handles automatically. Volatility Support is the 3.28 Exceptional Support that adds a multiplier-plus-variance to each hit. Void Shockwave Support stacks a secondary phys-becoming-elemental shockwave per tick.
Inpulsa's Broken Heart converts the shock-kill explosion into screen-wipe territory. Shaper of Winter ascendancy adds cold exposure on hit (-25% cold res to enemies), Mastermind of Discord layers exposure with all elements while you've used a skill of that type recently, and Heart of Destruction gives a flat 40% more elemental damage. Four golems (Summon Flame Golem + Summon Ice Golem + Summon Chaos Golem + Summon Lightning Golem) sit in the chest with Enhance Support, triggered by Liege of the Primordial and boosted by the golem-cluster passives. Assassin's Mark via Mark On Hit Support in the boots layers crit and power charges. The amulet is Bound By Destiny with Warlord ignite-immunity active.
47k EHP, 61% block + 78% spell block, 4.2k life, all resists capped with 75% chaos. The block stack is enormous — Bastion of Elements + Rumi's Concoction + The Blue Nightmare (chance to block spell at 50% of resist value) + Versatile Combatant pathing combine to make almost every hit a blocked one. Winterweave's The Effect of Chill on you is reversed turns enemy chill debuffs into self-buffs — Cyclone moves faster when you're "chilled," which also gates The Fulcrum's pen-while-chilled line. Devoto's Devotion's Mercury Footprints keeps traversal on top of packs. Fortify uptime from Shield Charge / Leap Slam and Rumi's covers what block doesn't. Pantheon is Brine King + Gruthkul.
~700k DPS at 77.5% crit and 5.8 APS, playing as a phys-converted elemental Cyclone. Walk forward, left-click, watch the screen detonate — Inpulsa's Broken Heart's shock-kill explode chains through whole map layouts, and Winterweave's reversed-chill keeps Cyclone moving at uncapped speed. Boss rotations fold around Bottled Faith-equivalent consecrated-ground windows (the reference doesn't run it yet, but it's the standard next upgrade). Leap Slam + Devoto's Devotion's speed cover traversal. Golems tank hits in the background and feed Liege of the Primordial's more-damage multiplier. The fourth ascendancy pick (Heart of Destruction) stacks directly onto every element.

Aspirational L95–100
- The aspirational pivot keeps The Fulcrum + Inpulsa's Broken Heart + Winterweave and adds Lethal Pride + The Blue Nightmare + Watcher's Eye + Ryslatha's Coil for the real scaling run. The chest is the same Inpulsa's Broken Heart but now with a higher-roll copy (43% increased damage on its damage line). The weapon is still The Fulcrum. DPS goes from 700k to 2.8M and EHP from 47k to 69k — every uplift is incremental, not a build pivot.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Same engine, more density. The Fulcrum still converts everything to elemental. The 6-link moves into the weapon (Cyclone + Pulverise Support + Invert the Rules + Volatility Support + Void Shockwave Support + Infused Channelling Support), and the chest drops its 6-link for four golems + Enhance Support + Leap Slam as a utility package. Invert the Rules (3.28 Exceptional) replaces Trinity Support at the absolute ceiling — it flips a stat bucket for a tuned re-roll that out-multiplies Trinity's resonance mechanic at peak gear.
Ryslatha's Coil is the belt of choice: 48% more maximum physical attack damage pre-conversion feeds The Fulcrum's conversion chain, and 44% less minimum creates a roll distribution that peaks high — paired with Volatility Support's variance mechanic, the ceiling rolls dominate the DPS curve. Cinderswallow Urn flask adds +7% increased damage against ignited enemies (ignite via the fire-converted portion of each hit) and mana-on-kill. Rumi's Concoction pushes block over cap. The Blue Nightmare adds 10% of lightning as extra chaos + spell-block-from-lightning-res to the block stack.
Jewels do the heavy scaling. Multiple Lethal Pride seeds under Kaom convert Duelist cluster into Karui-warrior-conquered passives (86% of endgame + aspirational meta). Bound By Destiny gives ignite immunity and +1 to all cold skill gems if 6 Redeemer items. Impossible Escape in a Hex Master or Elemental Overload radius wires a keystone in without pathing cost. Replica Reckless Defence pushes block-overcap. A Watcher's Eye with cold pen with Hatred + added cold with Hatred is the damage ceiling jewel. Shaper of Winter + Liege of the Primordial + Mastermind of Discord ascendancy holds; the fourth pick goes either Heart of Destruction for the 40% more elemental multiplier or Bastion of Elements for the block overcap, depending on boss focus.
69k EHP, 71% block + 59% spell block, 3.9k life, all resists capped with 35% chaos. Block is still the defensive spine — The Blue Nightmare + Bastion of Elements + Rumi's Concoction + Replica Reckless Defence + Versatile Combatant pathing all compound. Winterweave's reversed-chill is still the self-chill vehicle. Ryslatha's Coil's Gain 50 Life on Stun layers a chip-recovery loop on top of Pride's phys-taken-as reduction. Hatred + Herald of Purity + Herald of Ash + Precision (via Eternal Blessing Support + Enlighten Support in gloves) run simultaneously. Pantheon is Lunaris + Gruthkul for the pinnacle chain mitigation.
Peak converted-phys Cyclone. 2.8M DPS at 79% crit and 5.8 APS, with every tick penetrating resist via The Fulcrum's chilled-pen line and double-dipping through Trinity Support/Invert the Rules's resonance-or-flip multiplier. Inpulsa's Broken Heart's shock-kill chain becomes absurd once the build is one-shotting rares through Volatility Support's ceiling rolls — screen-clearing is a chain of white-pack detonations triggered by whichever rare crit-shocked first. Leap Slam is in the chest as the utility movement. Boss rotations are stand-next-and-channel; pinnacle fights (Sirus, Maven, Exarch) fold inside one Bottled Faith-style consecrated-ground window whenever the build adopts it (most aspirational sheets do). Four-golem army keeps producing Liege of the Primordial buffs in the background. The Elementalist feel is less "walking weather event" than the Slayer — it's closer to "walking chain-reaction of shock explosions and golem buffs," which sounds narrower but clears maps faster.
