Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Essence DrainOccultist is Witch, starts Int, levels cleanly as a caster. Buy Essence Drain from Nessa after Hillock — its chaos DoT previews the endgame damage profile and is strong at every level. Flame Dash as travel. Void Manipulation Support for pure chaos scaling. Pick up Contagion from the Brutus reward to pair with Essence Drain for pack clear.
- Act 2: run Essence DrainSwift Affliction Support (L18) is a big DoT damage boost for Essence Drain. Slot Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin for panic defense. Take "Kill all" bandits for +2 passives. Keep Clarity up at low level for mana sustain.
- Act 3: run Essence DrainDespair curse unlocks from the Library quest — this is the signature Occultist curse (more chaos damage taken) and pairs perfectly with your poison-Cyclone endgame. Self-cast it on rares and bosses until you get curse-on-hit later. Malevolence from the Library quest reward scales DoTs — keep it running. Lab 1 in Act 3: Profane Bloom — corpses explode, huge clear multiplier even before the pivot to melee.
- Act 4–5: run CycloneCyclone gem unlocks at L24 — buy from Lady Dialla (Act 4 Kaom reward). Transition requires a 1H mace or sword with physical damage + attack speed, plus the strength/dex for Leap Slam and gem requirements. Main link becomes Cyclone + Poison Support + Void Manipulation Support + Infused Channelling Support. Poison Support is the entire damage scaling for this build — every hit applies a stacking poison with long duration, scaling off physical and chaos damage simultaneously. Do NOT slot Multistrike Support. Swap travel from Flame Dash to Leap Slam once strength is solved.
- Act 6–8: run CycloneSwap Despair into a Blasphemy link (as an aura) once you have reservation for it — permanent curse aura, no more self-casting. Deadly Ailments Support at L31 massively scales your poison damage at the cost of hit damage (fine trade — this is a DoT build). Vaal Ancestral Warchief replaces the regular totem for bossing. Lab 2 in Act 6: Withering Presence — permanent withered on nearby enemies, adding up to 15% more chaos damage taken per stack.
- Act 9–10: run CycloneAt 5-link, Unbound Ailments Support adds another poison damage multiplier plus stack cap increase. Lab 3 in Act 9: Malediction — adds Despair curse-on-hit baked into your hits even without a curse gem, plus curse effect. Between Malediction's curse effect, Withering Presence's withered, and Despair's -chaos-resist, you have three layered chaos multipliers active simultaneously. Cap 75% resist before maps.
How leveling works
Cyclone on an Occultist is the chaos-poison flavour of the skill — you convert physical to chaos via Poison Support scaling, stack withered from Withering Presence, curse on hit through Malediction, and detonate corpses through Profane Bloom. The result is a tag-team damage profile: your Cyclone hit applies poison, withered increases enemy chaos damage taken by up to 15%, Malediction curses them with Despair on hit for more chaos damage, and Profane Bloom explodes the corpses for clear. It is a damage-over-time-heavy melee hybrid that plays very differently from the physical Cyclone Slayer.
The Occultist ascendancy order you are grabbing is Profane Bloom (chaos explosions on kill — huge clear multiplier), Withering Presence (permanent withered on nearby enemies + chaos damage bonus), Malediction (curse on hit + curse effect bonus), and Void Beacon (chaos exposure for -25% enemy chaos resist). Withering Presence is the build-defining ascendancy — it stacks with Poison Support and Despair for layered chaos damage multipliers that go absurd by late maps.
Cyclone's gem is L24 and bought from Lady Dialla in Act 4 (or Siosa's library in Act 3), so you level with spell skills through the early acts — Occultist is a Witch start with Int-heavy gear. Freezing Pulse, Arc, and Essence Drain are all strong options, but since the endgame is chaos-focused, Essence Drain + Contagion at low level previews the chaos-damage playstyle you are pivoting toward. Transitioning from caster to channeled melee in Act 4–5 is awkward — you need a 1H weapon, strength/dex for gem requirements, and some physical-base mods to start scaling hits. Plan ahead.
Critical gem-compatibility rule: Cyclone is channeled. Multistrike Support does NOT work — do not slot it. Support the main link with Poison Support, Void Manipulation Support, Infused Channelling Support, and Deadly Ailments Support (poison damage multiplier at the cost of hit damage — ideal for a DoT-focused build). A Tabula Rasa for campaign, rare jewellery with life and resists, and Bottled Faith for the endgame consecrated ground are the notable gear targets.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: a 1H mace, sword, or sceptre with flat physical damage, attack speed, and ideally "adds chaos damage to attacks". Physical base scales your poison damage directly. Vendor-recipe rares during acts; long-term target is a rare 1H with attack speed + multi-damage + chaos damage.
- · Body armour: a Tabula Rasa for campaign is ideal — guaranteed 6-link. Endgame pivots to a rare 6-link ES or ES/armour hybrid with life and resists, or Shavronne's Wrappings for chaos immunity (huge with Occultist's low-life tech if you commit to it).
- · Helmet/gloves/boots: life + resists + ES. Occultist is ES-focused, so every slot that can roll ES or hybrid ES should. Goldrim helmet covers early resist gaps cheaply. Witchfire Brew is a unique flask that applies Despair on use — budget endgame pickup.
- · Rings/amulet: life + resists + chaos damage + attack speed. Atziri's Promise is a cheap flask (not a ring) that converts some physical to chaos and gives chaos damage — a strong leveling pick.
- · Belt: Heavy Belt or Leather Belt with life and resists during leveling. Stygian Vise with an abyss jewel slot is the endgame goal.
- · Flasks: a life flask with "of Staunching" (bleed removal), a quicksilver, Atziri's Promise for chaos conversion + damage, Witchfire Brew for Despair application, and a diamond or granite flask. Bottled Faith is a long-term aspirational flask that gives permanent consecrated ground.
- · Shield: a rare shield with life, ES, and resists — Occultist is ES-heavy and the shield slot is where a lot of your tankiness lives.
Weapon progression
Use vendor-recipe 1H weapons with any flat physical or chaos roll through Acts 1–3 while clearing as a spellcaster. Once Cyclone transitions in Act 4–5, prioritise a 1H with physical damage + attack speed — physical base scales your poison damage, and attack speed scales how frequently you apply poison stacks. The endgame target is a rare 1H with physical damage, attack speed, and ideally "adds chaos damage to attacks" for a flat chaos bump. Cospri's Malice is a tempting endgame unique for cold-converting Cyclones but does NOT fit the chaos-poison path; avoid it for this build. The Scourge claw or Obliteration 1H wand are thematic chaos-path picks but not usually leveling priorities. None of these are urgent — get to maps first with any rare 1H, then shop for an upgrade.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Multistrike Support does NOT work with Cyclone — Cyclone is channeled. Never slot it. Use Infused Channelling Support, Deadly Ailments Support, and Unbound Ailments Support instead.
- ! Poison damage is damage-over-time, not hit damage. Deadly Ailments Support multiplies your poison DoT massively but REDUCES your hit damage — you trade burst for sustained damage. This is correct for the build but will make your tooltip DPS look lower than expected. Trust the shaper DPS or poison-specific calculations in PoB, not the displayed hit tooltip.
- ! Withering Presence's withered has a stack cap (15 stacks) and its effect is capped at 15% increased chaos damage taken per stack. You hit the cap almost immediately with Cyclone spam — do not over-invest in additional withering sources once you have the ascendancy.
- ! Occultist has no innate armour or leech — the class defenses are energy shield recharge, chaos immunity (if you go low-life + Shavronne's Wrappings), and Malediction's curse layering. Cap 75% resist before maps and do not skip Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin.
- ! The Act 3–5 transition from caster to melee is the hardest part of the leveling plan. You need a 1H weapon, strength for Leap Slam, and dex for support gems all at once. If it is not coming together, stay on Essence Drain + Contagion through Act 6 and swap when Lilly Roth gives you gem access.
- ! 3.28 brings Exceptional Support gems — several of them scale damage-over-time / poison better than their standard counterparts. Check poedb.tw for current support options before committing endgame currency to a 6-link gem layout, especially the Exceptional replacements for Deadly Ailments Support and Unbound Ailments Support.
Early Mapping L70–84
- If league-starting Cyclone Occultist, expect to run a Blade Vortex or Poison BV transitional phase through this tier — the CoC infrastructure is too expensive for a fresh character
- Prioritize Whispers of Infinity early — Skills Cost Energy Shield instead of Mana or Life is the amulet that enables the whole ES-based cost model
- Melding of the Flesh + Aegis Aurora + Purity of Lightning — this trio is the Occultist's defensive identity, land it as a package

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
This tier's picked reference is NOT a Cyclone build — the L80 character runs Blade Vortex as the main skill with a poison-chaos identity. The 6-link in the Twilight Regalia runs Blade Vortex + Void Manipulation Support + Deadly Ailments Support + Unbound Ailments Support + Greater Unleash + Minion Pact + Efficacy Support. Bino's Kitchen Knife is the weapon, the amulet is Whispers of Infinity with Skills Cost Energy Shield instead of Mana or Life, and the whole kit is stacked ES + chaos-over-time + poison rather than Cyclone channeling.
The Chaos Inoculation keystone is live (93% of the tier runs it), and the Occultist ascendancy is already at four nodes: Withering Presence, Void Beacon, Unholy Authority, Vile Bastion. Aegis Aurora off-hand + Melding of the Flesh jewel produce the +88/+88/+88 res max-res pushed + 74% block + 78% spell block block wall that defines the Occultist's defensive signature. Watcher's Eye with Zealotry 107% spell crit chance on consecrated ground + Discipline +25 ES per hit + Purity of Lightning shock immunity wires the ES + crit + shock-immunity trio. Mageblood appears already at this tier on the picked reference (it's the belt).
For players actually planning a Cyclone Occultist at this tier, the ascendancy path is the same — Withering Presence + Void Beacon + Profane Bloom + Vile Bastion — but a Cyclone-specific gem setup would be Cyclone + Cast On Critical Strike Support + Forbidden Rite of Soul Sacrifice + Void Manipulation Support + Greater Volley Support + Power Charge On Critical Support once the unique density is there. The tree's Zealot's Oath still applies (converting life regen to ES regen). Most of this tier's actual players are running Blade Vortex and rerolling into Cyclone-CoC at endgame rather than league-starting it.
175k EHP on the picked reference — this is enormous for early mapping. 8k ES, 60% physical damage reduction, 74% block, 78% spell block. Chaos Inoculation means life is 1, so chaos damage literally cannot kill you. Melding of the Flesh pushes all elemental resists to 88% (max-res cap) — the Aegis Aurora +5% max cold res, Sol Shroud chest +2% max lightning res, and the Purity of Lightning aura stack combine to push max-res. This is the build's genuine identity — "unkillable tank that happens to channel a weapon." Red Nightmare adds block-from-fire-res passives. Pantheon is Arakaali + Ralakesh.
For the reference character: Blade Vortex stack-and-poison. Stack 10 Blade Vortex charges via Greater Unleash, rotate the poison stack, Bino's Kitchen Knife's on-poison-kill aoe-poison chains through packs, and the tank shell lets you stand in anything. For a Cyclone-Occultist plan at this tier, the setup is walk-forward Cyclone with Mark On Hit Support + Assassin's Mark auto-cursing rares, and the trigger damage ramps up as soon as the CoC package lands. The reference's playstyle ("stand in a pack, tank everything, apply chaos DoT") is close to how a Cyclone-CoC version also feels — the Occultist identity is tanky-melee-chaos regardless of specific main skill.

Endgame L85–94
- At endgame the build snaps into Cyclone-CoC-Forbidden-Rite identity. Whispers of Infinity stays; Mageblood stays; Chaos Inoculation stays. Malachai's Loop replaces Aegis Aurora for the power-charge spell-damage scaling, the 6-link body armour becomes the Cyclone-CoC vehicle, and Willclash helmet adds +1 max power charge + spell block per charge.
- Pick up Bottled Faith — 54% of endgame and 79% of aspirational builds run it for the consecrated ground crit-chance tripler + damage-taken debuff
- Target a Militant Faith timeless jewel for the devotion-based damage scaling — 75% of endgame runs it
- Upgrade to a rare body armour with +% phys taken as chaos + high ES rolls — the CI shell wants ES density over life

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The 6-link in Twilight Regalia runs Cyclone + Cast On Critical Strike Support + Void Manipulation Support + Forbidden Rite of Soul Sacrifice + Cooldown Recovery Support + Greater Volley + Power Charge On Critical Support. Cyclone is the trigger attack, crits drive Cast On Critical Strike Support, and Forbidden Rite of Soul Sacrifice fires as the spell payload — Forbidden Rite deals chaos damage scaled by max life/ES sacrifice (CI makes the ES sacrifice cheap) and the Greater Volley Support + Cooldown Recovery Support (3.28 Exceptional) combo fires multiple projectiles per trigger and cycles the CoC cooldown faster.
Dusk Fang Imperial Skean weapon rolls +1 to all Cold Spell Skill Gems, 102% spell crit chance, 30% attack speed, and Gain 5% of Non-Chaos Damage as Extra Chaos — the attack speed drives Cyclone's trigger rate, the spell crit chance drives Forbidden Rite's crit chain, and the chaos-extra scales the Forbidden Rite payload. Willclash helmet adds +1 max power charge, +5% spell block per power charge, and a Gain a power charge every second loop — the power charge stack pushes both spell damage and spell block to pinnacle-tier values.
Malachai's Loop off-hand adds +2 max power charges, +20% chance to gain power charge on hit, and +13% spell damage per power charge. Combined with the helmet and Conviction of Power (not taken — that's Hierophant) or the Occultist's own power charge notables, the sheet hits 10 power charges for a massive spell damage multiplier. Ralakesh's Impatience boots lock frenzy charges at max (but actually this reference runs it for Count as having max Power Charges if corrupted appropriately — the boots' text here is the power-charge variant).
Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocate Withering Presence through the jewel combo. Melding of the Flesh still pushes res to max-res cap. Void Beacon ascendancy keeps chaos exposure on enemies in range. Profane Bloom explodes killed enemies for chaos damage, chaining through packs. Vile Bastion gives ES regen on kill. Unholy Authority as fourth pick adds +1% critical strike chance per Power Charge, which at 10 charges is +10% flat crit — a huge boost to the CoC trigger reliability. Supreme Ostentation (transformed from Ghost Dance) is on the tree via a Timeless Jewel.
194k EHP, 13.7k ES, 71% block, 78% spell block, res at max-res cap (89/89/89 from Melding of the Flesh), chaos at 17% (irrelevant under Chaos Inoculation). The defensive wall is everything at once: CI immunity to chaos damage, max-res cap from Melding, block wall from Willclash + Malachai's Loop + Replica Reckless Defence + tree, Vile Bastion ES regen on kill for permanent sustain. Immortal Call via CwDT auto-guards big phys slams. Profane Bloom's kill-explosions clear chip damage from swarming mobs before they hit. Pantheon is Lunaris + Gruthkul.
Stand in the pack, channel. 99.77% crit chance, 5.56 crit multi, 9.89 APS — Cyclone tick rate is so high that Cast On Critical Strike Support's cooldown is the actual rate-limit, and Cooldown Recovery Support trims that cooldown. Every crit fires a Forbidden Rite volley, each volley chains through Void Beacon-exposed enemies for heavy chaos damage, killed enemies explode via Profane Bloom, the chain loops. Boss rotations are stand-next-to-boss-and-channel because the Greater Volley cone overlaps on a single target. Frostblink is weapon-swap-bound. Flame Dash in gloves covers small gaps. The build's biggest playstyle difference from Slayer Cyclone is "tank first, damage second" — you don't have to dodge boss telegraphs because you can stand in most of them.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational doubles down on every component. Whispers of Infinity + Mageblood + Melding of the Flesh + Chaos Inoculation stay. Malachai's Loop is swapped for a rare Titanium Spirit Shield with stacked block + spell crit + ES. Kalandra's Touch mirrors a rare Synaptic Ring for doubled power-charge scaling. Bottled Faith and Impossible Escape land. EHP jumps from 194k to 311k.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The Cyclone-CoC-Forbidden-Rite engine holds. The 6-link in Twilight Regalia runs Cyclone + Cast On Critical Strike Support + Void Manipulation Support + Cooldown Recovery Support + Greater Volley Support + Forbidden Rite of Soul Sacrifice + Power Charge On Critical Support. Cooldown Recovery Support + Greater Volley Support are both 3.28 Exceptional Supports — Cooldown Recovery trims CoC's internal cooldown for higher trigger density, Greater Volley fires more projectiles per trigger.
Viper Edge Imperial Skean rolls +1 to all Chaos Spell Skill Gems, 109% spell crit chance, 30% attack speed, +38% crit multi, and Enemies you Kill have a 15% chance to Explode for phys damage — the chaos-gem-level line pumps Forbidden Rite by +1 gem, the spell crit pushes the CoC trigger to 100%, and the kill-explode chain compounds on Profane Bloom's kill-explode chain. Rare spirit shield off-hand with 80% increased chance to block, 93% spell crit chance, 5% chance to double damage, and recover 4% ES on block. Whispers of Infinity amulet at +145 max ES + 8-25 chaos per 100 mana — with stacked mana via gear affixes, this line produces a huge flat chaos additive per attack.
Bottled Faith applies consecrated ground with tripled crit chance + 10% increased damage taken — pinnacle boss fights are won inside this flask's window. Kalandra's Touch mirrors a rare Synaptic Ring with +1 max power charge, +20% crit multi, and +6% spell damage per power charge — doubled by the Kalandra. Mageblood makes 4 utility flasks (Rumi's + Diamond + Amethyst + Quicksilver) permanent. Ascendancy stays Withering Presence + Void Beacon + Vile Bastion + Forbidden Power (or Profane Bloom depending on fourth pick).
Militant Faith timeless jewel at 76% aspirational meta converts passives to Templar-conquered nodes with Devotion-scaled bonuses. Sublime Vision with Discipline aura disables other auras and adds +1 max power charge while affected by Discipline + 38% increased aura effect. Unnatural Instinct replaces small passives. Impossible Escape (79% aspirational meta) in Mind Over Matter radius allocates the keystone without pathing. Thread of Hope very-large-ring variant allocates multiple scattered notables. Grand Spectrum × 3 (Cobalt + Crimson + Viridian) stacks +25% crit chance per Grand Spectrum, +1 min endurance charge per Grand Spectrum, +1 min frenzy charge per Grand Spectrum — three charge types at minimum even without triggers. Watcher's Eye gives Pride 47% increased phys damage + Discipline +8% spell block + 29 ES on hit.
311k EHP, 24.3k ES, 72% block, 75% spell block, 39% physical damage reduction, max-res cap at 89/89/90 elemental. This is the tankiest Cyclone variant in the game by a wide margin. Mageblood's permanent Rumi's flask stacks block over cap. Vile Bastion's ES-regen-on-kill keeps the pool topped in combat. Profane Bloom's kill-explode chain clears chip-damage threats before they land. Melding of the Flesh's -73% all res debuff combined with the +2% max-res from multiple sources pushes the max-res cap to 89-90% (far above the default 75%). Ghost Reaver keystone converts leech to ES. Sublime Vision's aura-disable is net positive because the +1 max power charge + 38% aura effect + disabled-other-auras pays out more than running Zealotry + Wrath would. Pantheon is Solaris + Gruthkul.
Peak Cyclone Occultist is walking through pinnacle content with basically zero survival concerns. 8.7M DPS on the PoB sheet, 100% crit, 5.27 crit multi, 10 APS, 11 power charges. Every Cyclone tick is a guaranteed crit, every crit triggers Forbidden Rite via CoC with the cooldown trimmed by Cooldown Recovery Support, each trigger fires an expanded Greater Volley Support cone, and killed enemies chain-explode via Profane Bloom + Viper Edge's kill-explode on the weapon. Bottled Faith's consecrated ground triples crit chance and adds +10% damage taken — pinnacle bosses fall inside one Bottled Faith window. The defensive numbers mean Sirus die beams, Maven memory-games, and Exarch ball phases bounce off the EHP wall; the build's only real death condition is physical one-shots that exceed the ES + block + max-res stack, which are vanishingly rare at this tier. The feel is less "walking weather event" (Slayer) and more "walking black hole" — chaos explosions, power-charge builds, and ES walls everywhere.
