Cyclone of Tumult

Slayer

#16 most played skill on the Mirage ladder Built from 3.28 Mirage ladder data Generated 2026-04-20 Data via poe.ninja

Cyclone of Tumult Slayer is pure-physical channel melee — you hold left-click, spin through a pack, and Brutal Fervour's Overleech refills life faster than anything chips it away. Tumult's single-target bias means each tick lands harder than the base gem; Brutality Support strips non-physical damage for a flat 59% more multiplier that costs nothing because the hit was already 100% phys.

Consider this if you want a tanky, forgiving melee that laughs at phys reflect (Slayer just ignores it) and wants every roll on every piece of gear to be a phys multiplier — no conversion gimmicks, no fire/cold/chaos tax. Not the right pick if you hate channel skills, want ranged safety, or expect comfortable endgame defences on a budget — the endgame transitional shell deliberately trades block for damage and relies on Overleech to paper over the gap.

Is this build for me
Strengths
  • +Brutal Fervour Overleech + ailment immunity while leeching is the tankiest melee sustain in the game — one hit refills life through the whole fight
  • +Headsman ignores phys reflect entirely and adds culling strike on rares — phys-reflect maps just stop mattering
  • +Every multiplier on gear is a phys multiplier — no wasted affixes, simple crafting targets, clean trade searches
  • +Aspirational ceiling is 7.37M DPS at 97% crit chance via Bottled Faith's tripled crit chance on consecrated ground
  • +Block wall returns at aspirational — 65% attack block / 65% spell block layered on top of Overleech makes pinnacle bosses trivial
Weaknesses
  • Endgame transitional shell is genuinely glass — sheet EHP reads 15k and chaos resist drops to -60% until aspirational gear comes online
  • Channel skill means no Multistrike — your support pool is smaller than most melee archetypes
  • Mana sustain is fragile without -channelling mana cost rings or Lifetap Support — unsocketed Cyclone drains you in seconds
  • Pinnacle boss burst phases (Sirus die beams, Maven memory-games) still punish the "stand and spin" commitment

Leveling L1–68

What to work on next
  1. Act 1: run Frost Blades
Buy Frost Blades from Nessa after Hillock; it is a strong cheap-weapon clear skill. Grab Leap Slam from the Mud Flats reward — it will remain your travel skill all the way into maps. Onslaught Support from Brutus gives a free attack speed buff while on-kill. You can substitute Sunder at Merveil if you prefer heavier AoE over projectiles; both paths work.
  2. Act 2: run Sunder
Swap to Sunder once you have a 2H mace or axe — its wave clear mirrors how Cyclone of Tumult will feel later and keeps you on the same weapon type. Add Melee Physical Damage Support as soon as you hit a 4-link. Ancestral Protector totem from the Sharp and Cruel reward gives a big attack speed buff for rares and bosses. Take "Kill all" bandits (+2 passives). Slot a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin for panic defense.
  3. Act 3: run Sunder
Pride from the Library quest reward becomes your main aura — the physical-damage increase is what scales Cyclone of Tumult the hardest later. Add Pulverise Support for area of effect on your Sunder link. Fortify Support on Leap Slam keeps fortify up between packs. Lab 1 here: Bane of Legends. Visit Siosa after clearing the Library — Cyclone of Tumult is available from him once you hit L24, so you can pre-buy the gem and level it in a secondary slot.
  4. Act 4–5: run Cyclone of Tumult
Transition into Cyclone of Tumult once the gem hits L24 and you have a decent 2H weapon. Infused Channelling Support replaces Melee Physical Damage Support in the 4L priority during the swap because it gives both damage and physical damage reduction while channeling — and critically, Multistrike Support does NOT work on channeled skills, so do not slot it. Add Herald of Ash for overkill clear. Keep Ancestral Protector up for boss fights. Lab 2 in the Karui Shores / Act 6 area: Endless Hunger.
  5. Act 6–9: run Cyclone of Tumult
Expand to a 5-link when you can craft or buy one; Fortify Support joins the main link so fortify is always up while spinning (no more needing to Leap Slam into packs first). Vaal Ancestral Warchief replaces the regular totem for bossing. Lab 3 in Act 9: Headsman. On the tree, prioritise Art of the Gladiator, Master of the Arena, and Blood Drinker on the way down to the Duelist leech cluster — they feed directly into the endgame core.
  6. Act 10: run Cyclone of Tumult
If you are going pure physical into maps, slot Brutality Support for a huge damage multiplier (at the cost of any non-physical damage, so drop Herald of Ash's ignite contribution from your mental math). Otherwise keep the Act 6–9 setup. Cap all three elemental resists to 75% resist before entering maps — Slayer's armour pool does nothing against elemental hits. Farm any outstanding life nodes on the tree.

Run Uber Lab as soon as you hit L68 for Brutal Fervour — this is the single biggest quality-of-life spike for the build. Until you have it you will feel squishy in yellow/red maps; after you take it, Overleech plus ailment immunity turns the build into the tanky smooth mapper it is known for. A 6-link unlocks the final support slot — typical choices are a second damage support or Rage Support depending on your weapon tier.

How leveling works

Cyclone of Tumult is a transfigured variant of Cyclone that trades the fast, continuous rotation for a wider sweep and a slower, heavier spin. The result is noticeably smoother map clear at the cost of some single-target ramp time. Like base Cyclone, it is a channeled melee attack that scales with attack speed, area of effect, and weapon physical DPS. As a Slayer, you build around armour, fortify, Overleech, and the ailment immunity granted by Brutal Fervour while Leeching — that combination is what makes the endgame version of this build a smooth, tanky mapper.

Cyclone of Tumult itself is a L24 gem and is not sold by early-act vendors, so you level as a generic melee attacker (Frost Blades for clear or Sunder for heavier AoE) through Acts 1–4, then swap into Cyclone of Tumult around Act 4–5 once the gem is available from Siosa (Act 3 library) or Lilly Roth (Act 6). The Slayer ascendancy points you will grab across the Labs are: Bane of LegendsEndless HungerHeadsmanBrutal Fervour. Brutal Fervour is the build-defining node — it makes you immune to bleed, other ailments, and stun while Leeching, which is effectively always in maps once Cyclone is spinning.

Important gem-compatibility note: Cyclone of Tumult is a channeled skill, so Multistrike Support does NOT function with it — use Infused Channelling Support (defense + damage) or Brutality Support (pure physical) in its place once you commit to Cyclone. Rare jewellery with life and resists, a 4-link during the acts, and a Tabula Rasa if you find one cheaply will carry you to maps without any specific leveling uniques.

Gear while leveling
  • · Weapon: any 2H axe, mace, or sword during leveling — vendor recipes (magic 2H + Blacksmith's Whetstone + quality) keep your physical DPS climbing through the acts. Axes tend to win long-term on this build for the implicit attack speed and physical bases.
  • · Body armour: a Tabula Rasa is the ideal campaign chest if you can trade for one — a guaranteed 6-link is worth more than any rare. Otherwise, a 4-link armour or armour/evasion chest with life and resists.
  • · Helmet/gloves/boots: life and resists first, everything else second. Aim to enter maps capped at 75% resist on all three elements. Goldrim is a cheap helmet that covers elemental resists for most of the campaign.
  • · Rings/amulet: life + resists, with attribute fix-ups (strength and dexterity for gem requirements) as needed. Cheap unique rings are fine filler during the acts.
  • · Belt: Heavy Belt or Leather Belt with life and resists. No need for unique belts during leveling.
  • · Boots: Wanderlust is a classic early-level pick for the movement speed and freeze immunity; swap to rare boots with life and resists once you outgrow the low ES tier.
  • · Flasks: a life flask with bleed-removal, a quicksilver, a granite + iron skin, and a diamond flask once you can buy one. Keep a quicksilver active at all times.
Weapon progression

Use vendor-recipe physical 2H weapons (magic 2H + Blacksmith's Whetstone + Armourer's Scrap upgrade path, or just buy cheap rares at each act hub) through Acts 1–6. Once you commit to Cyclone of Tumult, prioritise a 2H axe or mace with "adds X to Y physical damage", a high attack speed roll, and a physical % roll. The endgame target is a crafted or bought rare 2H axe with three physical prefixes — pushing pieces like Starforge or Atziri's Disfavour are far above leveling priorities, but they are the aspirational upgrades once you are farming maps consistently. Get to maps with anything, then start shopping the trade site for an upgrade.

Watch out for
  • ! Cyclone of Tumult is a channeled skill — Multistrike Support does NOT work on it. Do not slot it no matter how tempting the DPS tooltip looks. Use Infused Channelling Support and/or Brutality Support instead.
  • ! Brutal Fervour only grants ailment immunity while you are actively Leeching. If you stop spinning in a tough fight, leech runs out in a second or two and your immunities drop. Keep Cyclone channeling — do not stop to reposition manually, use Leap Slam instead.
  • ! The "Tumult" variant has a slower rotation speed than base Cyclone, which means the first spin-up after Leap Slam'ing into a pack feels sluggish. This is normal — the trade-off for the wider sweep. Players coming from regular Cyclone sometimes mistake this for a weapon-tier problem.
  • ! Slayer's armour-based defensive layer does nothing against elemental damage, so capping 75% resist on all three elements before entering maps is non-negotiable. Goldrim carries you most of the way there during the acts.
  • ! If you pick up Brutality Support for the 6-link, it zeroes out all your non-physical damage — which means Herald of Ash's burn contribution and any "added elemental damage" rolls on your weapon stop scaling with your hits. This is fine (the multiplier is worth it) but adjust expectations when reading PoB numbers.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

Cyclone of Tumult at this tier is already running the build's definitive engine: a two-handed staff spinning a pure physical hit that Brutality converts into a flat damage multiplier. The 6-link sits in the body armour (Dread Shroud, Glorious Plate) with Cyclone of Tumult + Brutality Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Pulverise Support + Shockwave Support + Infused Channelling Support. Brutality Support strips all non-physical damage in exchange for a huge more-physical multiplier, which is exactly the trade Tumult wants because its base hit is already 100% physical. Pulverise Support widens the swing radius, Shockwave Support stacks a secondary physical AoE on every hit, and Infused Channelling Support layers a channel-only more-damage bonus plus the familiar damage-reduction infusion — a support choice that is correct here because Cyclone is channelled and Multistrike does not apply.

A rare Ezomyte Staff (Rune Gnarl) with 176% increased Physical Damage, 24% attack speed, and 30% crit chance provides the weapon foundation, with a second 6-link copy of the skill hosted in the staff itself (General's Cry + Ground Slam of Earthshaking + Autoexertion + Brutality Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Pulverise Support) for a burst-on-demand warcry nuke. Pride in the helmet is the primary offensive aura — a straight physical-damage multiplier for enemies nearby — and Flesh and Stone layers Maim and damage reduction on top. The tree runs Kinetic Impacts, Master of the Arena, Martial Experience, Spirit of War, and Battle Trance into the Slayer start for raw two-handed physical scaling, with a Lethal Pride timeless jewel converting the Duelist socket cluster into conquered Karui passives.

Defensive layers

Defence here is the textbook Slayer stack. Unwavering Stance locks in stun immunity at the cost of dodge, and Versatile Combatant converts the staff's attack-block into equal spell-block — giving 65% block and 65% spell block from a single weapon class. Brutal Fervour supplies the Slayer's signature Overleech and the ascendancy's baked-in bleed/stun/ailment immunity while leeching, so mobs that would chip-stack through block never actually tick. Impact adds more melee damage and stun, Headsman adds culling strike on rares, and Hematophagy + Bloodless extend the leech. Physical mitigation hits 77% physical damage reduction from 24.7k armour, all elemental resists are capped, and chaos is comfortably at +75%. 5.3k life with fortify from the Glorious Plate's on-hit roll and Rumi's Concoction's +12/+6 block while flasking produces 82k EHP.

What it feels like

Walk forward and hold left-click. Leap Slam + Faster Attacks in the boots covers traversal, and Cyclone of Tumult's channelled whirl carves a slow deliberate arc through packs — Pulverise Support makes that arc wide enough to wipe a screen. Blood Rage gives constant frenzy-like damage and attack speed, General's Cry + Ground Slam of Earthshaking handles beefy rares and bosses in one warcry window, and Brutal Fervour Overleech refills life instantly on the first kill of a pack. Telegraphs that would murder a glass build just bounce off the armour + block stack while Cyclone keeps ticking.

What to work on next
  1. The staff drops its defensive wings: Versatile Combatant is gone, block collapses to 13%, and the build leans entirely on Brutal Fervour Overleech + recovery speed. Boss-single-target migrates to a The Yielding Mortality weapon-swap that summons Summon Greater Harbinger of Brutality as a parked nuker.
  2. Swap to Ashes of the Stars early — +1/+25% quality on the 6-link is the single biggest DPS jump
  3. Invest in an Amethyst ring pair with Channelling Skills have -3 total mana cost to free Infused Channelling Support from Lifetap dependency
  4. Craft the Astral Plate with -15 total mana cost of socketed attacks — it's the enchant that makes Cyclone sustain indefinitely

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

The body-armour 6-link is the same engine, now properly tuned. Cyclone of Tumult + Brutality Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Pulverise Support + Infused Channelling Support + Void Shockwave all sit in a rare Astral Plate (Rune Sanctuary) with -15 to socketed attack mana cost and +1.31% crit chance on attacks. The weapon is now an Eventuality Rod (Skull Chant) rather than a staff, crafted with +1 max Power and Endurance Charges, 190% combined physical damage, 25% attack speed, and 36% chance to Freeze — the rod base drops shield block entirely in exchange for raw DPS. Ashes of the Stars as the amulet gives +1 to all gems and +25% quality, so every support in the 6-link inherits a pseudo-level plus the extra Pulverise AoE and Melee Physical more-multi from quality.

Single-target sequencing flips at bosses: swap to The Yielding Mortality Imperial Staff to summon a Greater Harbinger of Brutality, swap back, then layer General's Cry + Ground Slam of Earthshaking + Autoexertion in the main weapon for exerted warcry slams. Assassin's Mark is applied automatically via Mark On Hit in the boots, stacking crit chance and crit multi on rares — 79.5% crit chance and 4.71 crit multi are the end result. The tree gets Juggernaut, Steadfast, Endurance, and Warrior's Blood for life + phys-DR, with a bigger (15696-warrior) Lethal Pride conquering more passives.

Defensive layers

EHP drops to 15k on the sheet — the crucial caveat is that this number excludes recovery, and the actual survival engine is Brutal Fervour Overleech feeding 4.6k life back every second the skill is channelling. 55% physical damage reduction holds via armour, all three elemental resists cap, and 283 life regen covers the downtime between packs. Chaos resist at -60% is the obvious gap — this character gambles on Brutal Fervour's ailment immunity while leeching and eats the chaos-hit risk, a deliberate glass-cannon trade to free up rolls for life and damage. The Stampede boots lock movement speed at 150% of base plus 58% travel-skill cooldown recovery, which turns Leap Slam into near-permanent mobility.

What it feels like

Faster and deadlier. 2.58M DPS on the sheet, 79.5% crit chance, 5.11 APS — Cyclone stacks hits fast enough that Mark On Hit refreshes Assassin's Mark on every new rare the screen spawns. Mapping is walk-forward-spin-kill, with Leap Slam covering inter-pack movement. Bosses open with the weapon-swap Harbinger summon, then sustain damage flows from Cyclone + warcry exertions. The feel is classic Slayer power-fantasy but built on a pure physical chain rather than the ailment tricks other tiers lean on — every number on the gear is a physical multiplier.

Aspirational L95–100

What to work on next
  1. The big pivot at aspirational reverses the defensive collapse. Versatile Combatant returns, block climbs back to 65%/65%, the staff comes back (Skull Branch, Ezomyte Staff) as the main hand, and a Watcher's Eye + Bottled Faith + Replica Witchfire Brew trio stacks onto Pride for the true DPS ceiling.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

The 6-link body armour is Havoc Wrap (Conquest Lamellar) with Ignore Stuns while using Socketed Attack Skills, Socketed Attacks have -20 to Total Mana Cost, and a rare You can apply an additional Curse roll. The 6-link hosts Cyclone of Tumult + Brutality Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Pulverise Support + Infused Channelling Support + Increased Critical Damage Support — swapping out the Shockwave-family AoE support for pure crit multi, because the Watcher's Eye's 12% chance to deal Double Damage while using Pride and Bottled Faith's 130% increased Critical Strike Chance against Enemies on Consecrated Ground both scale multiplicatively with crit multi.

The weapon is a Skull Branch Ezomyte Staff with 218% combined physical damage, 26% attack speed, 25% crit chance, and +156 accuracy — a well-crafted but not mirror-tier rare. The real multiplier stack is elsewhere: Bottled Faith applies consecrated ground for 10% increased damage taken and tripled crit chance against enemies standing in it; Replica Witchfire Brew procs Vulnerability as an aura; and the Conquest Lamellar's extra curse slot lets Assassin's Mark from Mark On Hit stack on top of Vulnerability without overwriting it. The tree picks up Titanic Impacts, Forceful Skewering, Harpooner, Vigour, and Revelry — all two-handed + life + impale scaling — and a larger (17853-warrior) Lethal Pride in the Marauder cluster replaces more passives with Karui conquered nodes. Purity of Elements in the boots provides full elemental ailment immunity and propagates to the Watcher's Eye's Unaffected by Conductivity while affected by Purity of Lightning line.

Defensive layers

67k EHP, 65% attack block, 65% spell block, 53% physical damage reduction, 437 life regen, and chaos resist at +75% (up from -60% at endgame). Every defensive gap closes at once. Brutal Fervour Overleech still sustains the life pool, but the active block layer means individual hits land for a fraction of their telegraphed value — boss slams that would burst the endgame build glance off. Rumi's Concoction pushes block over cap during its window, Flesh and Stone in Sand Stance Maims nearby enemies for a 10% reduced damage dealt debuff, and Purity of Elements plugs the self-shock / self-freeze risk that Blood Rage otherwise creates. Bottled Faith's consecrated ground also gives constant life regen on top of the tree's.

What it feels like

The apex Slayer feel. 7.37M DPS, 97% crit chance, 5.41 crit multi — every Cyclone tick is a guaranteed crit on any enemy standing in Bottled Faith's consecrated ground, every third tick is a Double-Damage swing via the Watcher's Eye line, and Vulnerability + Assassin's Mark layer on top. Pinnacle bosses fold under sustained channel pressure: Sirus, Maven, Eater/Exarch die in the time it takes to complete a single channel rotation. Mapping is identical to endgame — walk forward, spin, Leap Slam between packs — but survival is dramatically more forgiving because block covers what Overleech can't.
