Cyclone

Slayer

#15 most played skill on the Mirage ladder Built from 3.28 Mirage ladder data Generated 2026-04-20 Data via poe.ninja

Cyclone Slayer is the classic two-handed channel archetype — you hold left-click, walk forward, and the screen dies around you in a continuous sweep. Brutal Fervour's Overleech covers your mistakes, Bane of Legends's kill-explosion chain wipes trash packs in a single pass, and every multiplier on gear is a pure physical multiplier.

Compared to its sibling Cyclone of Tumult, base Cyclone trades some single-target density for a wider AoE footprint and a shallower gear curve — the 5.4m screen-wide sweep is what the archetype is famous for, and the build stays comfortable from a cheap early-mapping staff up through a mirror-tier aspirational shell. Consider this if you want the most forgiving melee in the game and the iconic "walking weather event" feel. Not the right pick if you want focused single-target over screen clear, or if a channel skill without Multistrike Support feels limiting.

Is this build for me
Strengths
  • +Screen-wide 5.4m AoE sweep — wider footprint than Cyclone of Tumult, so map clear is one continuous motion
  • +Brutal Fervour Overleech + ailment immunity while leeching makes survival trivially forgiving
  • +Headsman ignores phys reflect entirely — phys-reflect map mods just stop mattering
  • +Gear curve is gentle — a simple rare Ezomyte Staff carries you through red maps, and upgrades are incremental, not pivot-heavy
  • +Aspirational reaches the "walking weather event" power fantasy — Stibnite Vulnerability aura + Mageblood + dual-keystone Versatile Combatant + Unwavering Stance covers everything
Weaknesses
  • Endgame trades block for armour density — the sheet drops to 30% block and relies heavily on Overleech + 85% PDR
  • Channel skill means no Multistrike and mana sustain needs dedicated -channelling mana cost rings or Lifetap Support
  • Single-target is noticeably softer than Cyclone of Tumult — if you mostly care about pinnacle-boss DPS, that variant hits harder per tick
  • Chaos damage and big phys slams that bypass armour are the real killers — pinnacle burst still punishes the "stand and spin" commitment

Leveling L1–68

What to work on next
  1. Act 1: run Frost Blades
Buy Frost Blades from Nessa after killing Hillock — it's strong on any 1H weapon and gives you a feel for melee scaling. Onslaught Support from the Brutus quest reward. Leap Slam (quest reward after Medicine Chest) is your main mobility tool and stays with you the whole campaign.
  2. Act 2–3: run Sunder
Swap to Sunder once you finish Act 2 — it shreds packs with its shockwave and carries you to the Cyclone swap. Pick up Herald of Ash from Yeena. Add Melee Physical Damage Support once you have a 4-link. Slot a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin for panic defense. Take "Way of the Poacher" bandit reward (kill all, for the passive points).
  3. Act 3: run Sunder
Grab Hatred from the Library quest — your main damage aura the rest of the campaign. Clarity you should have been running since Act 1 at low level for mana sustain. Blood Rage from Clarissa (Library quest) gives frenzy charges and attack speed — the life degen is real but manageable with leech from the tree. Ancestral Protector totem for boss fights. If you're running a claw or dagger, Whirling Blades replaces Leap Slam as travel skill. Lab 1 in Act 3: Bane of Legends.
  4. Act 4–5: run Cyclone
Cyclone's gem is L24 — buy it from Lady Dialla as your Act 4 quest reward after the Kaom fight. Slot it into your 4-link with Fortify Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Infused Channelling Support. Fortify Support is huge — it gives you permanent fortify while channelling, a massive defensive layer. Important: do NOT slot Multistrike SupportCyclone is channeled, so Multistrike Support has no effect on it.
  5. Act 6–8: run Cyclone
Pick up Pride from Act 8 (Sin's reward after the Solaris fight) — run it alongside Hatred for a massive physical damage boost now that you have mana reservation headroom. Pulverise Support from Petarus and Vanja (Act 6) adds area of effect — huge for clear on a tight-area Cyclone. Vaal Ancestral Warchief replaces the regular totem for bossing. Lab 2 in Act 6: Endless Hunger.
  6. Act 9–10: run Cyclone
If you're going pure-physical (no elemental conversion), swap Infused Channelling Support out for Brutality Support once you hit a 5-link — massive more physical damage at the cost of all elemental damage. Keep Infused Channelling Support if you want the stacking buff and defensive layer instead. Lab 3 in Act 9: Headsman — this gives you culling strike, one of the build's signature clear-speed levers. Push to Act 10 and aim for 75% resist on all three elements before entering maps.

Run Uber Lab as soon as you hit L68 to grab Brutal Fervour — this is the single biggest quality-of-life spike for the build. Until you have it, you'll feel squishy in red maps; after you take it, the build clicks into the smooth-leech mapper it's known for. Pair Brutal Fervour's ailment immunity with a 6-link chest to hit the endgame feel. Long-term weapon target: Starforge or Atziri's Disfavour, but any rare 2H with high pDPS carries you deep into yellow maps.

How leveling works

Cyclone is the OG melee mapper — a channeled attack that spins you in a continuous rotation, hitting everything in a tight area while you move. It scales with weapon DPS, attack speed, and area of effect, and leans on the Slayer ascendancy's Overleech, ailment immunity from Brutal Fervour, culling strike from Headsman, and innate area + leech to make a smooth, chunky mapper.

Critical distinction: vanilla Cyclone has a faster rotation and tighter area than Cyclone of Tumult — better single-target, worse clear. For this guide we're on vanilla, which is why the endgame pathway leans hard into Headsman's culling strike and Brutal Fervour's sustain rather than pure clear-speed nodes. Cyclone's gem is L24 when you can buy it from Lady Dialla in Act 4, so for Acts 1–4 you swap between Frost Blades and Sunder — both excellent on cheap weapons — and transition into Cyclone around Act 4–5.

The Slayer ascendancy points you'll grab in the Labs are: Bane of LegendsEndless HungerHeadsmanBrutal Fervour. Brutal Fervour is the build-defining pick: it makes you immune to bleed, ailments, and stun under Overleech, and is what unlocks the smooth mapping experience the endgame guide is built around. Important gem note: Cyclone is a channeled skill, so Multistrike Support does NOT work with it — don't slot it. Use Infused Channelling Support, Fortify Support, Melee Physical Damage Support, Pulverise Support, and Brutality Support (for pure-phys builds) instead.

Rare jewellery with life and resists, a 5-link as soon as you can craft one, and a Tabula Rasa if you find one will carry you through the campaign without any specific gear targets. Save your currency for the endgame transition — don't sink it into leveling uniques.

Gear while leveling
  • · Weapon: any 2H axe/sword/mace with the highest physical DPS you can find. Vendor recipes (rare weapon + Blacksmith's Whetstone + Rustic Sash) keep you topped up cheaply through the acts. Cyclone loves high base damage because the attack rate is already high.
  • · Body armour: rush a Tabula Rasa if you can find/buy one — a guaranteed 6-link is worth more than any leveling rare. If not, a 4-link armour chest with life and resists. armour bases scale with the Slayer's defensive layers.
  • · Helmet/gloves/boots: prioritise life and resists over everything. You want to enter maps capped on all three elemental resists at 75% resist.
  • · Rings/amulet: life + resists, with attribute fix-ups as needed. Cheap leveling uniques like Goldrim (helmet) cover the hardest resist gap for a few alchs, and Wanderlust boots give movement speed + freeze immunity early.
  • · Belt: Heavy Belt or Leather Belt with life and resists. No need for unique belts during leveling.
  • · Flasks: a life flask with bleed-removal, a quicksilver, a granite + iron skin or stibnite, a Lion's Roar once you can afford it, and a diamond flask. Keep a quicksilver up at all times — Cyclone's movement is channel-tied, so flask movespeed stacks well.
Weapon progression

Use vendor-recipe 2H weapons (rare 2H + Whetstone + Rustic Sash → guaranteed physical damage rolls) through Acts 1–6. Around the Cyclone swap in Act 4–5 you want the highest pDPS 2H axe or sword you can craft, ideally with attack speed as a suffix. Any 2H with a physical damage prefix and either attack speed or local crit takes you to maps cleanly. Long-term endgame targets are Starforge (pure-phys endgame 2H sword), Atziri's Disfavour (high-tier axe with life/mana leech and AoE baked in), or a well-rolled rare 2H with "added phys" and "% increased phys" mods. Oro's Sacrifice is the alternative weapon for ignite-Cyclone builds — totally different scaling tree, so only go that route if you've committed to it. None of these uniques are leveling priorities; get to maps first, then farm the upgrade.

Watch out for
  • ! Multistrike Support does NOT work with CycloneCyclone is a channeled skill, and Multistrike Support only affects non-channelled melee attacks. If you slot it, you'll lose damage with no benefit. Use Infused Channelling Support, Fortify Support, Melee Physical Damage Support, Pulverise Support, and Brutality Support instead.
  • ! Brutal Fervour requires you to be Leeching to give bleed/ailment/stun immunity. If you stop channelling Cyclone in a tough fight, leech runs out and your immunities drop. Always keep the spin flowing — this is why channelled-uptime uniques and nodes matter.
  • ! Blood Rage's life degen is real — don't cast it until you have meaningful life leech from the tree (pick up Blood Drinker early). In Act 3 you can toggle it for bosses only; by Act 6+ you should be able to keep it up permanently.
  • ! Do NOT take Resolute Technique on a crit-scaling Cyclone build — it removes your ability to crit. It's a reasonable pick only for pure-physical no-crit variants where you'd rather invest in accuracy-agnostic damage.
  • ! Acrobatics on a Slayer is a trap for this build — you're stacking armour + leech for defense, and Acrobatics's armour/ES penalty kills your primary mitigation. Evasion-based Cyclone is a different build entirely.
  • ! Don't run Pride until Act 8+ when you have the mana reservation headroom — it's a 50% aura and will starve your mana if you try to force it earlier alongside Hatred + Herald of Ash.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

Cyclone Slayer at L83 is still in transitional leveling shape — vanilla Cyclone lives in the body armour 6-link while a General's Cry warcry layer on the staff does the heavy lifting for single target. The Loath Guardian Conquest Lamellar carries Cyclone + Infused Channelling Support + Pulverise Support + Brutality Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Void Shockwave SupportBrutality Support locks in pure physical for a flat 59% more multiplier, and Void Shockwave Support (one of the 3.28 Exceptional Supports) adds a slam-wave follow-up on every channel tick.

The Spirit Pole Judgement Staff rolls 204% increased Physical Damage, 25% attack speed, and a crit-multi-while-blocked line that pairs with Versatile Combatant. A Phoenix Circle unset ring applies Vulnerability on hit via its corruption. Pride + Flesh and Stone reserve through a Level 3 Enlighten in the helmet, Precision sits in the ring unset, and Blood and Sand toggles into blood stance for damage. The tree runs Versatile Combatant into Bloodless, Hematophagy, Battle Trance, Master of the Arena, Steelwood Stance, and a Lethal Pride seed under Kaom. Ascendancy is already fully allocated — Headsman, Brutal Fervour, Impact, Bane of Legends — which is why this reference reads 4M DPS against a 318k tier median.

Defensive layers

Textbook armour-stack Slayer sandwich: 70% physical damage reduction, 21.4k armour, and 65% block on both attacks and spells thanks to Versatile Combatant + the staff's base block roll. Brutal Fervour delivers the signature Overleechleech continues for 4 seconds after you stop attacking, so one hit on a white pack refills life through the whole fight. The Loath Guardian chest adds 5% additional physical damage reduction and "Ignore Stuns while using Socketed Attack Skills" so Cyclone never stutters. Bleed + corrupted-blood immunity from the Divine Life Flask of Sealing, resistances at 76/75/75 with 68% chaos, and Headsman's culling strike trims low-HP rares before retaliation.

What it feels like

Pre-pivot Slayer groove — walk forward, channel, let Overleech cover mistakes. Cyclone handles pack clear, General's Cry mirages burst tanky rares, Frostblink covers map gaps, and Blood Rage layers on extra attack speed. Bane of Legends already provides permanent Onslaught and the kill-explosion chain, so white-pack maps evaporate in one sweep. Lion's Roar adds a 10% more melee physical burst and knockback panic button.

Endgame L85–94

What to work on next
  1. The key shift at endgame is that vanilla Cyclone moves into the staff 6-link as the dedicated main-damage slot, and Unwavering Stance replaces Versatile Combatant — block drops to 30% but stun immunity plus freed suffix rolls unlock dramatically more offensive scaling.
  2. Hunt a Watcher's Eye with Pride phys-taken-as-fire + Determination armour
  3. Roll a Lethal Pride seed targeting multi or life on Kaom's conquered nodes
  4. Pick up Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh for a second-ascendancy notable

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

The Sorrow Pillar Ezomyte Staff carries the endgame 6-link: Cyclone + Pulverise Support + Brutality Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Increased Critical Damage Support + Void Shockwave Support. Brutality Support's 59% more physical damage dominates the staff's 32% + 129% increased physical rolls and 28% attack speed.

Mageblood is the budget break — four utility flasks (Amethyst of the Rainbow, Diamond of the Armadillo, Granite of Incision, Quicksilver of the Cheetah) apply permanently, meaning +19% all-ele resist, crit chance, 60% increased armour, and movement speed are always on. Carnage Heart supplies 1.86% of physical attack damage leeched as life, 50% increased leech recovery rate, and 38% increased damage while leeching, stacking directly with Brutal Fervour's Overleech. Dual Amethyst rings each roll -4 channelling mana cost + 7-10 flat physical, making sustained channel mana-free. Pride + Determination + Flesh and Stone reserve with Level 3 Enlighten; Precision goes into an Arrogance Support life-reservation socket; Mark On Hit Support + Assassin's Mark in the boots auto-curses every swing. Tree adds Harpooner and Champion of the Cause.

Defensive layers

60.5k armour with 85% physical damage reduction is the wall — Determination runs alongside Pride, and the Havoc Ward Royal Plate's 105% armour + 10% non-curse aura effect compounds Determination itself. Unwavering Stance means zero stun interruption on channel. Brutal Fervour Overleech is still the primary sustain; 4.1k life refills instantly during any pack fight.

The Glyph Crest helmet layers 6% physical from hits taken as cold (rolled into a capped element) + 8% physical damage taken recouped as life. Mind Grasp gloves carry the critical 32% chance to ignore enemy physical damage reduction — huge against armour-heavy bosses. Chaos resist caps at 75% with +87% overcap. Pantheon is Brine King + Abberath.

What it feels like

Forward-pressure Slayer. Cyclone channels at 6.5 attacks per second with a wide footprint from Impact + Pulverise + Void Shockwave's slam follow-up. Bane of Legends's kill-explosion chain clears whole screens; Leap Slam covers gap-closing. Berserk is the pinnacle-boss burst, Molten Shell auto-casts through Automation, and the triple -4 channelling ring/amulet stack makes mana a non-issue.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

The Victory Skin Royal Plate holds the primary 6-link: Cyclone of Tumult + Brutality Support + Infused Channelling Support + Pulverise Support + Increased Critical Damage Support + Void Shockwave Support. The chest itself rolls 14% increased effect of non-curse auras, 8% additional physical damage reduction, 109% increased armour, and Melee Hits have 9% chance to Fortify (fortify uptime from the channel itself). The Entropy Mast staff runs Ground Slam of Earthshaking + General's Cry + Melee Physical Damage Support + Autoexertion Support + Increased Critical Damage Support + Pulverise Support as a pinnacle-boss warcry burst layer.

Three rings (Skull Finger, Apocalypse Grasp, Two-Stone) and the Fate Choker amulet each carry -3 channelling mana cost — net -12, making sustained Cyclone entirely mana-free and freeing Arrogance Support-reserved Precision to scale. Rumi's Concoction on the flask bar stacks with the Entropy Mast's +25% staff block. Replica Witchfire Brew runs a permanent Vulnerability aura during flask effect. Tree picks up Harpooner, Titanic Impacts, Forceful Skewering, Champion of the Cause — every two-hand melee notable the Duelist corner offers — re-coloured by a Lethal Pride seed under Kaom.

Defensive layers

Comfort block-stack: 65% attack block / 47% spell block from Versatile Combatant + staff + Rumi's, 60% physical damage reduction, 4.5k life, and Brutal Fervour Overleech. Purity of Elements delivers full elemental ailment avoidance without flask coverage, freeing the flask bar for pure offence. Flesh and Stone's sand-stance blind layered with +541 accuracy rings and +459 accuracy gloves pins enemy hit chance low while yours sits at 100%. Chaos resist lands at 65%. Pantheon swaps to Solaris + Gruthkul — Solaris's alternating crit-taken mitigation is a direct pinnacle upgrade, and Gruthkul stacks with the armour wall.

What it feels like

Peak Slayer comfort. Cyclone of Tumult channels at 5.6 attacks per second with a 5.4m AoE radius — the screen-wide sweep the archetype is famous for. Bane of Legends detonates whole screens, culling strike from Headsman finishes anything that survives, Leap Slam + Stampede boots' 150% base move speed make traversal negligible. Stibnite's Vulnerability aura compresses boss kills to the Diamond flask window. The build feels less like piloting a character and more like walking around with a permanent weather event.
