Chieftain

#17 most played skill on the Mirage ladder Built from 3.28 Mirage ladder data Generated 2026-04-20 Data via poe.ninja

Fire Trap Chieftain is the lay-kite-lay DoT dealer. Throw a cluster of traps under the boss, sidestep the telegraph, and let the burning ground do the work while you stand still and regen through whatever hits you. The Chieftain's fire-res overcap plus Cloak of Flame's physical-taken-as-fire conversion turns incoming physical damage into fire hits that bounce off your 90% fire resistance.

Consider this if you like degen playstyles, hate dodging, and want to feel genuinely unkillable — stacked block, 2,000+ life regen/sec, and overcap in the +96% to +306% range means you can tank almost anything non-chaos. Not the right pick if you want fast screen-clearing hit-based gameplay or flask-spam thrills — traps are slow by nature, and the real kill pattern is throw-and-wait, not nuke-on-click.

Is this build for me
Strengths
  • +Overcapped fire resistance (+96% endgame, +306% aspirational) paired with Cloak of Flame makes physical hits feel weightless
  • +Chieftain life regen stack — 2,000+ life per second plus Defiance of Destiny missing-life buffer means you reset to full between hits
  • +Stacked block from Svalinn / Loath Rook / rare Heat-attuned shield across tiers — 75-91% attack and spell block
  • +Boss fights are stand-on-telegraphs-and-tank — the character's mitigation stack lets you eat mechanics other builds have to dodge
  • +Archdemon Crown injects effective extra links into the Fire Trap setup — a 5-link chassis plays like a 6-link
Weaknesses
  • Pinnacle chaos damage is the one real gap — Kalandra's Touch builds drop chaos res to 18% and feel it on Uber bosses
  • Slow kill speed against beefy single targets — DoT ramp-up means bosses don't vaporise, they melt
  • Trap cooldown + throw rhythm is an acquired taste — if you want to left-click and explode packs, this isn't it
  • Gear-dense aspirational tier (Mageblood + The Adorned + Elegant Hubris + Defiance of Destiny) — a serious investment before the ceiling is reached

Leveling L1–68

What to work on next
  1. Act 1: run Fire Trap
Fire Trap drops from Breaking Some Eggs (Nessa, Marauder quest reward) — throw it at packs and let the burning ground do the clearing. Grab Holy Flame Totem as a secondary from the same Act 1 vendor pool to handle single-target. Buy Trap Support from Nessa the moment you have it available, and link Combustion Support for ignite scaling.
  2. Act 2: run Fire Trap
Swift Affliction Support drops as a quest reward — slot it immediately, the increased DoT is enormous for Fire Trap. Bandits: kill all for +2 passives. Grab Flammability from the Intruders in Black quest and self-cast it on rares for the big fire damage over time multiplier. Holy Flame Totem stays in as a stationary single-target anchor.
  3. Act 3: run Fire Trap
Buy Burning Damage Support from Clarissa at L18 — it replaces Combustion Support as your ignite damage multiplier. Pick up Flame Dash for movement and Herald of Ash for extra burn propagation. Lab 1 in Act 3: take Tasalio, Cleansing Water first — fire res + life regen is the build foundation even though damage picks come later. Steelskin goes on manual cast as a panic button.
  4. Act 4–5: run Fire Trap
Deadly Ailments Support replaces Combustion Support once available — the more multiplier on ailment damage is the best 4-link support for ignite-focused Fire Trap. Pick up Purity of Fire for the 75% resist overcap (useful for Act 5 Kitava). Lab 2 in Act 6: take Ngamahu, Flame's Advance for fire penetration — this is the single biggest damage spike in the whole leveling flow. Holy Flame Totem can finally drop out of the rotation if gem sockets are tight.
  5. Act 6–7 (L45+): run Fire Trap
Slot into Tabula Rasa for the 6-link as soon as one is affordable (usually Act 6–7). The canonical 6-link order is Fire Trap + Trap Support + Swift Affliction Support + Deadly Ailments Support + Burning Damage Support + Empower Support once Empower Support reaches level 3. Pick up Determination from the Act 6 Brine King quest for armour mitigation, and wire a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Immortal Call panic chain. Equip The Devouring Diadem at L28 if you have one — the trap throwing speed and aura effect are both huge.
  6. Act 8–10 (endgame gem swap): run Fire Trap
Swap Steelskin out for Molten Shell on the Cast when Damage Taken chain — armour stacking makes Molten Shell's absorb shield massively stronger at this stage. If you have access to Exceptional Support Gems from Mirage content, start swapping the weaker 4-link supports first (keep Trap Support and Empower Support until their Exceptional replacements drop). Lab 3 in Act 9: take Hinekora, Death's Fury for ignite damage and explosion chance — the 10% chance in 3.28 chains hard with Ngamahu, Flame's Advance's fire pen.

Once you hit maps, decide between two 6-link variants: the ignite-focused one (keep Deadly Ailments Support + Burning Damage Support) for bosses, or a clear-focused one that swaps in Cluster Traps Support + Ignite Proliferation Support for fast mapping. Many builds run two separate 6-link Fire Trap setups on weapon swap. Uber Lab ASAP for Tukohama, War's Herald — trap damage scales hard with it. After Kitava, your fire res uncaps at 75% resist again; re-verify overcap before running maps. Target tree notables like Heart of Flame, Clever Construction, Deadly Dilettante, and Trickery as you push to L68 and beyond.

How leveling works

Fire Trap is a throwable trap that explodes on trigger, lays down burning ground, and applies a stacking fire damage over time debuff — the primary damage comes from the ignite and burning ground, not the initial hit. Chieftain scales this better than any other class: Ngamahu, Flame's Advance gives flat fire penetration and fire damage, Tukohama, War's Herald adds massive totem/trap damage and endurance charges, Hinekora, Death's Fury boosts ignite and explosion chance, and Tasalio, Cleansing Water layers on life regen and fire resistance. The whole kit aligns.

Fire Trap is available as a Marauder Act 1 quest reward (Breaking Some Eggs from Nessa), so you can start on it immediately. The recommended path: throw Fire Trap from L1 with Holy Flame Totem as a secondary clear tool through Acts 1–3, pick up Trap Support and Swift Affliction Support early, then transition to a full 4-link Fire Trap setup in Tabula Rasa by Act 6. Chieftain points taken in order: Tasalio, Cleansing WaterNgamahu, Flame's AdvanceHinekora, Death's FuryTukohama, War's Herald. Ngamahu, Flame's Advance is the single biggest damage pick, but Tasalio, Cleansing Water first gives the survivability to take bigger risks with positioning.

Leveling uniques that pull weight: Goldrim (resists through Acts 1–5), Wanderlust (movement + freeze immunity), Tabula Rasa for the 6-link, and The Devouring Diadem once you hit L28 — the Diadem's trap throwing speed implicit and eldritch battery are both massive for a trap caster. Save your currency for essences on the weapon and for Tabula Rasa by Act 6. Unlike RF builds, you can drop traps from range with no self-burn risk — leveling is forgiving.

Gear while leveling
  • · Weapon: +1 to Fire Skill Gems wand or sceptre is the single best leveling weapon — craft with Essence of Rage on a wand base, or buy a rolled one for ~5c in league. Damage on the weapon itself barely matters because Fire Trap damage comes from the gem level and fire damage over time mods, not weapon DPS.
  • · Body armour: Tabula Rasa from Act 6 onward for the 6-link. After maps, swap to an armour/ES chest with life + resists + a crafted spell damage mod. Unlike RF builds, there are no chest unique traps to avoid — pick whatever fits your defences.
  • · Helmet: The Devouring Diadem at L28 is a cornerstone if you have one — trap throwing speed, aura effect, and eldritch battery solve mana sustain in one slot. Otherwise any rare with life + resists + the "Fire Trap has X% increased Damage" helm enchant works. Do Uber Lab for that enchant as soon as you can.
  • · Gloves / boots: flat life + resists + 30% movement on boots. Wanderlust is a strong early boot (no movement requirement plus freeze immunity). Gloves with added fire damage to attacks are worthless here — prioritise pure life + res + any trap throwing speed you find.
  • · Rings / amulet: life, fire res, and any life regen percentage you can find to help Chieftain's sustain. A fire-damage amulet with "+1 to Level of Fire Skill Gems" is the endgame target — expensive but transforms the Fire Trap 6-link.
  • · Flasks: bubbling life flask with "of Staunching" (bleed), a ruby flask for fire-res caps on fire maps, a granite "of Iron Skin" for the armour stack with Determination, a quicksilver, and a Sulphur Flask once you can buy one (the consecrated ground grants life regen that stacks with Chieftain's natural regen).
Weapon progression

Fire Trap Chieftain does not scale with weapon damage — the skill is a throwable DoT that scales with fire damage mods, fire damage over time multipliers, and skill gem level. Vendor-recipe early: any magic wand + Ruby Ring + Orb of Alteration gives you a rolled fire wand. Around L20 buy or craft a "+1 to Level of Fire Skill Gems" wand or sceptre (Essence of Rage on a wand base is the cheapest path). One +1 fire sceptre plus a shield carries you all the way to maps; the endgame upgrade is a +2 Fire Gems / +1 Socketed Gems sceptre with spell damage and cast speed, or a +1 to all Fire Gems amulet that frees the weapon slot for a trap throwing speed focused wand.

Heart of Flame Clever Construction Deadly Dilettante Trickery Lava Lash Cruel Preparation Diamond Skin Soul of Steel Constitution Purity of Flesh
Watch out for
  • ! Elemental reflect map mods will NOT one-shot you (the ignite itself does not reflect like a hit does), but the initial Fire Trap hit is still reflected — if you run high crit or heavy hit scaling, reflect can chunk you. For a pure ignite build it's usually fine, but check your Hit DPS vs your max fire res before facetanking reflect rares.
  • ! Kitava at the end of Act 10 cuts all resistances by 30%. Keep a ruby flask up during the resist phases. After killing Kitava your fire res is uncapped at 75% resist — re-equip gear or change flasks to hit overcap again before running maps.
  • ! Do NOT link Ignite Proliferation Support into your single-target Fire Trap setup. Proliferation is clear-only — it trades raw damage for spread and is a damage loss against single-target bosses. Run two separate setups if you want both clear and boss damage.
  • ! Empower Support must be level 3 minimum to be worth a 6-link slot. A level 1 Empower is barely a 10% damage increase and is outperformed by Burning Damage Support or Efficacy Support. Hold off on the swap until your Empower hits level 3 via quality or vendor leveling.
  • ! Trap throwing speed has a hard cap around 75% increased before diminishing returns get painful. Once you hit a comfortable breakpoint (roughly 3 traps per second), pivot your gear upgrades to life and resists rather than stacking more throwing speed — the returns taper fast.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

At this tier the archetype hasn't fully committed to traps yet — the reference character (fittingly named Mirage_EndedUpRF) is still riding the Chieftain leveling tail of Righteous Fire while the tree bakes in the fire ignite and fire damage over time scaffolding that Fire Trap will inherit at endgame. The 6-link Scholar's Robe (Cloak of Flame) runs Firestorm of Pelting + Detonate Dead of Scavenging triggered by Cast when Stunned, supported by Burning Damage Support, Swift Affliction Support, and Deadly Ailments Support — the exact DoT-multiplier supports a trap setup needs. Gloves carry "Ignites you inflict spread to other Enemies within 1.2 metres," which is the shared sticky-bomb clear pattern for both RF and trap variants.

Chieftain ascendancy is already locked in: Hinekora, Death's Fury for fire life regen, Valako, Storm's Embrace for endurance-charge generation, Tasalio, Cleansing Water for fire leech, and Ramako, Sun's Light for the life regen + resistance stack. Tree notables Holy Fire, Breath of Flames, and Divine Judgement pile on fire and DoT multipliers while Warrior's Blood and Cruel Preparation feed the life pool. Nebulis as a leveling sceptre scales +10% increased Elemental Damage per 1% Fire Resistance above 75%, which pairs with the Chieftain's easy fire overcap. Svalinn shield's 91% block + "Chance to Block is Lucky" is the bridging defense while the rare-item DPS piece comes online.

Defensive layers

This is the Chieftain signature stack already at near-full expression. 90% fire resist with +300% over-cap (yes, triple overcap) from Cloak of Flame + Corpse Crown + Horror Hoof boots + Defiance of Destiny, layered against the 40% phys-taken-as-fire conversion from Cloak of Flame — incoming physical hits become fire hits, and fire hits bounce off the overcapped resistance. 74% physical damage reduction comes from 10.9k armour. 91% block / 91% spell block from Svalinn, and 2,372 life regen/sec from stacked regen mods + Holy Fire refills the 5,777 life pool faster than most packs can chip it.

Defiance of Destiny amulet converts missing life into a "gain 24% of missing unreserved life before being Hit" buffer that stacks with Bloodnotch's stun-recoup. Valyrium ring makes Stun Threshold scale off energy shield instead of life, which — combined with the 976% stun and block recovery jewel — makes the character effectively unstunnable.

What it feels like

At this tier you are walking RF with Firestorm of Pelting stuttering out of Cast when Stunned procs for clear. Already feels like the leveling skeleton of a trap build — Chieftain's Hinekora, Death's Fury life regen and Cloak of Flame's damage conversion let you stand in the middle of packs, and the glove ignite-spread chains enemies into each other. Shield Charge + Frostblink handle traversal. The key "feel" note is that this is a transition tier: you're building the ignite DoT engine that Fire Trap will slot into at L85+ without rebuilding tree or Chieftain nodes.

Endgame L85–94

What to work on next
  1. The pivot finally lands: Fire Trap becomes the main skill, socketed in an Archdemon Crown with embedded Burning Damage Support and Concentrated Effect. Righteous Fire survives as a secondary DoT layer in the 6-link body armour. Mageblood is deferred for now in favor of Immortal Flesh's 416 life regen/sec, and the build picks up Annihilation's Approach boots for Adrenaline + a permanent burning ground aura.
  2. Trade Immortal Flesh for Mageblood once fire-res is sustained elsewhere — flask uptime is transformative
  3. Target a helmet with +2 fire skills implicit + socketed Burning Damage Support if the Archdemon drops below budget
  4. Add Swift Affliction Support or Controlled Destruction into the Fire Trap link for pure DoT multiplier

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

Fire Trap sits in a +2 skill gems / -2 support gems Archdemon Crown — the two injected support gems (Burning Damage Support + Concentrated Effect) stack onto the socketed Trap and Mine Damage Support + Efficacy + Lifetap Support for an effective 5-link fire damage over time rocket. The main body-armour 6-link still carries Righteous Fire + Swift Affliction Support + Burning Damage Support + Efficacy + Elemental Focus + Lifetap Support — a second concurrent DoT aura that keeps dealing damage while traps recharge. Cloak of Flame's 61% increased Ignite Duration on Enemies extends every Fire Trap ignite so the trap's initial hit lingers as burn damage long after the trap itself has detonated.

Chieftain ascendancy stays at Hinekora, Death's Fury, Valako, Storm's Embrace, Tasalio, Cleansing Water, and Ramako, Sun's Light. Tree additions: Arsonist (direct Fire Trap multiplier), Breath of Flames, Holy Fire, Divine Judgement, plus Unwavering Stance to trade dodge for cannot-be-stunned. Annihilation's Approach boots grant a level-20 Approaching Flames skill — the passive 6000 fire damage per second Flame-Touched aura stacks with your own Fire Trap burning ground for walk-through clear, and Adrenaline on Flame-Touched is a free 25% increased damage + attack/cast/move speed. Purity of Fire in the boots handles fire-res overcap; Herald of Ash adds overkill burn propagation for map clear.

Defensive layers

The Chieftain stack matures but shifts shape. 90% fire / cold / lightning resist with +96% fire over-cap (down from 300% in early mapping but still ample for Elemental Weakness) from Purity of Fire + Cloak of Flame + rare gloves + boots + amulet. 63% physical damage reduction carries from 7.6k armour plus endurance charges. 75% attack block / 71% spell block from Loath Rook shield (68% increased block chance + +3% max fire resist). 1,601 life regen/sec from Immortal Flesh's flat 416/sec + Chieftain regen nodes keeps the 5,126 life pool topped up between hits.

Immortal Flesh's "-16% to all Elemental Resistances" line is the classic Chieftain tradeoff — the ascendancy's sources of flat fire res and overcap absorb the penalty cleanly. EHP climbs to 124k, a massive jump from early mapping's 36k raw (despite the misleading 463k reload figure). Cloak of Flame's 40% phys-taken-as-fire conversion still funnels physical hits into the over-capped fire pool. Flasks roll as hit-charging utility (Quicksilver, Granite, Quartz, Sulphur with Consecrated Ground on use).

What it feels like

Now the build plays the true trap fantasy: lay, kite, lay. Against bosses you drop a cluster of Fire Trap throws under their feet, sidestep the telegraph, and let the burning ground ticks do their work while Righteous Fire's aura chips in. For clear, Herald of Ash + Annihilation's Approach's Approaching Flames trail means you barely need to throw traps at all on packs — you walk through, things ignite, things die. 2 metre base AoE from Concentrated Effect makes traps dense-hitting against single targets, while the glove "ignite spread within 1.2 metres" mod chains the fire across packs. Shield Charge + Faster Attacks covers movement.

What to work on next
  1. Mageblood returns as the belt and Defiance of Destiny comes back as the amulet. The Fire Trap 5-link tightens to Swift Affliction Support + Efficacy + Controlled Destruction + Lifetap Support in a +2 skill gems Archdemon Crown with socketed Burning Damage Support and Trap and Mine Damage Support. A Kalandra's Touch + rarity-find ring on the other hand pivots the build toward magic-find farming while keeping 885k Fire Trap DPS.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

Fire Trap at full power: helmet sockets carry Swift Affliction Support + Efficacy + Controlled Destruction + Lifetap Support, and the Archdemon Crown injects Burning Damage Support + Trap and Mine Damage Support plus 30% more elemental damage and 32% increased mine damage. That's effectively a 6-link with every fire damage over time multiplier stacked. The body armour still runs Righteous Fire as a secondary DoT with Elemental Focus + Burning Damage Support + Swift Affliction Support + Increased Area of Effect + Lifetap Support — aura-style pressure while traps cool down.

The tree grows to 133 points picking up Golem's Blood, Acrimony, Endurance, and Versatile Combatant for applying block chance to spell damage. Supreme Ostentation (transformed from Eternal Youth by a Elegant Hubris timeless jewel commissioned for Caspiro) eliminates attribute requirements on gear — letting the build wear Viper Paw gloves, Defiance of Destiny, and Kalandra's Touch without the usual attribute scramble. The Adorned jewel boosts all corrupted magic jewels in sockets by 89%, which transforms the six 5-6% life / DoT magic jewels slotted in the tree into something closer to 10% life + 8-9% DoT multiplier each. Malevolence, Flesh and Stone, Summon Skitterbots, and Purity of Fire fill the aura slots. Oriath's End on-kill-explosion flask + Annihilation's Approach trail make entire screens disintegrate in one trap-throw's worth of AoE.

Defensive layers

EHP 113k with 8,578 life — an aspirational Chieftain life pool. 90% fire / cold / lightning resist with +306% fire over-cap (back to triple-overcap) powered by Purity of Fire + Defiance of Destiny + Viper Paw + Annihilation's Approach + Cloak of Flame. 59% physical damage reduction from 2,345 armour + 4 endurance charges (Mageblood loses the armour a rare belt would bring, but granite flasks compensate). 68% attack block / 55% spell block from the rare Heat-attuned Tower Shield ("Recover 4% of Life when you Block" is an extra sustain layer).

2,577 life regen/sec from Chieftain notables + Holy Fire + Defiance of Destiny's gain 24% of missing unreserved life before being Hit is the core survival pattern — between hits you reset close to full. Cloak of Flame's 40% phys-taken-as-fire still funnels damage into the overcapped fire pool. The only real weakness is chaos resist at 18% (zero over-cap) — Kalandra's Touch on a Hypnotic Grip ring means the character spent the flex slot on rarity-find instead of chaos. Pinnacle chaos damage is the gap; everything else is covered.

What it feels like

The Mageblood-fueled flask uptime lets you throw Fire Trap continuously without mana anxiety, and Quicksilver + Ruby + Gold + Oriath's End keeps you at permanent +248% movement speed-modified sprint through maps. Bosses eat 3-5 trap clusters per arena reset; everything else walks into the Approaching Flames trail and detonates. The pantheon swap to Garukhan covers the residual evasion / move-speed gap. Enduring Cry on Weapon 1 auto-refreshes endurance charges for the 59% DR floor, and Defiance of Destiny's life-on-hit buffer is what lets the modest 8.5k life pool feel like 15k against non-overwhelming hits.
