Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Frost BladesStart Frost Blades from Nessa after killing Hillock — the secondary projectile waves handle clear, the physical-to-cold conversion feels strong on any leveling weapon. Whirling Blades from Nessa as travel skill. Ancestral Call Support from the Brutus quest reward is the bread-and-butter multi-target support. Ancestral Protector totem for boss attack speed buffs.
- Act 2: run Frost BladesHerald of Ice from Yeena after the Great White Beast — shatter-on-freeze is huge for clear, pairs with Frost Blades' physical-to-cold conversion. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support from Yeena fills out the 4-link. Slot Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin at L10. Bandit reward: kill all for +2 passives — passives always beat bandit power on Trickster.
- Act 3: run Frost BladesMultistrike Support at L38 from Clarissa — mandatory for both Frost Blades now and Flicker Strike later. Hatred from the Library quest reward becomes your main aura. Blood Rage also from Clarissa — slot it now, even on Frost Blades, for the frenzy charges on kill and attack speed buff. You will keep it through the swap as your pre-Swift Killer bridge. Lab 1 here: Patient Reaper — the on-kill recovery is your first taste of the Trickster sustain loop.
- Act 6 (L42 swap, with Blood Rage): run Flicker StrikeGem hits L42, time to swap. Buy Flicker Strike from Lilly Roth in Act 6. Blood Rage is your frenzy charges bridge until Swift Killer is online. Multistrike Support is mandatory. Vaal Ancestral Warchief replaces the regular totem for bossing. Lab 2 in the Act 6 area: Swift Killer — the moment you take it, Blood Rage becomes optional (many pilots keep it for the attack speed buff, some drop it for cleaner bleed-free play).
- Act 7–9: run Flicker StrikeFortify Support from Petarus and Vanja in Act 6 goes on Whirling Blades for constant damage-reduction uptime as you weave between packs. Haste from Lilly Roth joins Hatred as your second aura — more attack speed compounds hard on Flicker Strike, since every hit regenerates frenzy charges via Swift Killer. Lab 3 in Act 9: Ghost Dance — your evasion buildup-on-hit stacks, which layers with the tree's evasion nodes for a real defensive spike.
- Act 10 → Maps L68+: run Flicker StrikeRun Uber Lab at L68 for Weave the Arcane — attack and cast speed plus crit multi while you have recently used an arcane skill, which synergises with an Arcane Cloak cycle or any curse self-cast. Inspiration Support in the 6-link for mana reduction and elemental damage multi. Farrul's Fur chest is the endgame target — its aspect-of-cat on-crit frenzy charges refill plus power charges is what turns the build into full-speed mapper. Push resists to 75% resist on all three before red maps.
How leveling works
Flicker Strike on Trickster is the fast, evasive, leech-fuelled variant of the archetype. The build lives on a frenzy charges sustain loop: every teleport consumes a stack to remove the cooldown, so you need a steady generation source or the skill stutters. Trickster solves this with Swift Killer — you generate both frenzy charges AND power charges on kill — and stacks a complete set of layered defenses via Ghost Dance (evasion-on-hit), Patient Reaper (life/mana/ES recovery on kill), and Weave the Arcane (attack-and-cast speed plus crit when you recently used an arcane skill).
You do not level with Flicker Strike. The gem unlocks at L42, and even then the skill only clicks once you have a frenzy charges engine — either Swift Killer from Cruel Lab or Blood Rage as a bridge, plus optional Terminus Est or Farrul's Fur at higher levels. Before that the recommended path is Frost Blades or Bladefall through the early acts — both scale on cheap weapons and give you the attack feel you will keep. The swap target is Act 6 to Act 7, once the gem is accessible and Blood Rage is slotted.
The Trickster ascendancy path in Lab order is Patient Reaper (Lab 1: on-kill recovery and damage), Swift Killer (Lab 2: frenzy charges and power charges on kill, attack speed, and crit chance per charge), Ghost Dance (Lab 3: evasion-on-hit buildup, the primary defensive layer), and Weave the Arcane (Uber Lab: attack and cast speed plus crit multi while you have recently used an arcane skill, paired with a mana-on-skill-use effect). Swift Killer at Lab 2 is THE build-defining node — it eliminates the need for Terminus Est or any other charge-source unique, because your kills feed you both charge types automatically.
No specific leveling uniques are mandatory. A Tabula Rasa if you can get one, Goldrim through the early acts, and rare jewellery with life and resists carry the build to maps. Save your currency for the endgame weapon and a Farrul's Fur post-campaign.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: fast 1H claw or sword with added physical/elemental damage. Claws give leech synergy which fits Trickster's sustain identity; swords open up crit scaling paths. Vendor recipes (magic 1H + ruby/sapphire/topaz + Whetstone) keep you armed cheaply.
- · Body armour: Tabula Rasa if available — guaranteed 6-link beats any rare. Otherwise a 4-link evasion chest with life and resists. Endgame target is Farrul's Fur for the aspect-of-cat frenzy charges/power charges refill.
- · Helmet: life + resists + evasion. Goldrim through the early acts covers resist gaps cheaply. Later, a rare evasion helmet with the Flicker Strike enchant is a meaningful DPS upgrade.
- · Gloves: life, resists, attack speed. Haemophilia is a strong transitional unique while Blood Rage is active — the "Attacks have 25% chance to cause Bleeding" plus bleed-on-kill explosions fit the Trickster tempo well.
- · Boots: life, resists, movement speed. Wanderlust through the first few acts covers freeze immunity cheaply.
- · Rings/amulet: life + resists with attribute fix-ups, crit multi on the amulet for the endgame build. Le Heup of All covers attributes during the campaign if you are short on currency.
- · Belt: Heavy Belt or Leather Belt with life and resists. Bisco's Leash is a fun transitional unique if you find one — rampage frenzy charges stack well with Trickster.
- · Flasks: life flask with bleed-removal (mandatory while running Blood Rage), quicksilver, granite, jade or stibnite for evasion layering, and a diamond flask once you can afford one — crit scaling matters more on Trickster than on Juggernaut.
Weapon progression
Vendor-recipe elemental 1H weapons (magic 1H + ruby/sapphire/topaz + Whetstone → guaranteed elemental damage roll) through Acts 1–5 while running Frost Blades. Around the Flicker Strike swap at L42 you want a fast claw — Imperial Claw or Gemini Claw bases — with flat added physical damage and attack speed. Terminus Est at L64 is a cheap campaign pick but it is usually surpassed by a well-rolled rare claw once Swift Killer is online and you do not need on-kill charges from the weapon itself. The endgame target is a rare Imperial Claw with crit chance, attack speed, and multiple flat damage prefixes — but do not sink campaign currency into this, yellow maps is the right time to upgrade.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Do NOT swap to Flicker Strike at L42 without Blood Rage active. Swift Killer is the real fix, but before Cruel Lab you need the bridge — otherwise the skill stutters on cooldown and feels unplayable. Keep Blood Rage running continuously from Act 3 onwards.
- ! Swift Killer at Cruel Lab is the build-defining ascendancy — plan your Act 6 run to hit Normal and Cruel Lab back-to-back. Delaying it means running the campaign with Blood Rage as your ONLY charge source, which works but feels bad compared to post-ascendancy.
- ! Acrobatics is a tempting tree pick for the dodge layer but wait until you have enough evasion on gear to justify the life penalty — rushing it with sub-3000 life just makes you squishier. Mid-to-late maps is the right time.
- ! Blood Rage physical degen bypasses armour — keep a bleed-removal life flask at all times. On a low-life Trickster build (which is NOT what this guide targets, but worth noting) Blood Rage can kill you outright without regen support. Stay life-based.
- ! In 3.28 Mirage, Exceptional Support gems replaced Awakened supports. Awakened Elemental Damage with Attacks Support no longer exists — you want the regular gem while leveling, and the new Exceptional variant at endgame (a few chaos by week two of league). Do not waste time searching for the old Awakened versions.
- ! On hard single-target bosses you consume frenzy charges faster than kill-based generation can refill them. Swift Killer needs enemies to die for its charge cycle; a boss phase with no adds will drain your charges. Endgame fix is Farrul's Fur (aspect-of-cat on-crit charges) or a Frenzy gem on left-click. During the campaign, kiting to weaker adds between boss phases is good enough.
- ! Flicker Strike teleports you to a random target in range. Do not fight this — positioning on Trickster is reactive, and Ghost Dance's evasion buildup plus Patient Reaper's on-kill recovery are designed around the chaotic flow of the skill. Trust the sustain loop.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Finish the Trickster ascendancy with Swift Killer + Polymath — Swift Killer's frenzy-charge-on-crit is the defining charge-sustain ascendancy node at endgame
- Pick up Ghost Reaver on the tree so every leech modifier recovers ES instead of life — critical once the build commits to stacking ES pool
- Target a rare Titanium Spirit Shield with 75%+ increased chance to block + big ES rolls to replace Aegis Aurora — the aspirational meta drops Aegis for rare 75%-block shields

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
This tier is tiny (10 builds sampled) and the pattern is extremely uniform: 100% of players run Shavronne's Revelation, 90% run Chaos Inoculation, and 100% take Iron Reflexes + Precise Technique. The reference character runs a full transition into the CI-ES-flicker shell at L81, holding Ephemeral Edge ("Adds 1 to 75 Lightning Damage," "50% increased maximum Energy Shield," "25% reduced maximum Life," "Attacks with this Weapon have Added Maximum Lightning Damage equal to 11% of Player's Maximum Energy Shield") in one hand and Aegis Aurora in the off-hand for armour-recovered-ES on block. The 6-link in Bronn's Lithe is Flicker Strike + Multistrike Support + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Close Combat Support + Volatility Support + Damage on Full Life Support. Bronn's Lithe's "+5 to Level of Socketed Movement Gems" line scales Flicker Strike's base damage directly, and "80% increased Damage with Movement Skills" doubles the baseline.
The ES engine is Shavronne's Revelation's dual-ring-slot rules: left slot "Regenerate 40 Mana per Second" + "+250 maximum ES", right slot "Regenerate 6% of ES per second" + "+250 mana" — so a single copy provides both mana regen and ES regen simultaneously depending on slot. Voice of the Storm amulet (50% of tier) adds "Lightning Damage with Non-Critical Strikes is Lucky" plus 14% increased maximum Mana, which feeds Ephemeral Edge's scaling. The Trickster ascendancy at L81 is still mid-construction — Escape Artist (ES while evading), Soul Drinker are allocated, and the tree already has Soul Thief, Written in Blood, Mark the Prey. Wrath + Discipline reserve from gloves with Enlighten Support Lv3; Haste runs from the helmet. A Darkness Enthroned belt with two Murderous Eye abyssals adds 2 to 71 flat lightning damage on attacks at this tier.
The signature Trickster-flicker defensive stack is already forming. Chaos Inoculation locks life at 1 and makes the Ephemeral Edge -25% max life penalty free, Ghost Reaver (still being allocated) leeches to ES, and Iron Reflexes converts evasion into flat armour — pulling 13.5k armour from the body armour's 249% increased Evasion Rating. Physical damage reduction 66%, EHP 30.5k, and 4.3k ES hold up mapping well below pinnacle tiers.
65% attack block + 47% spell block via Aegis Aurora's +6% block and Versatile Combatant (already picked, 50% tier adoption) is the reactive layer, and Aegis Aurora's "Recover Energy Shield equal to 2% of Armour when you Block" means each block restores a chunk of ES — the build's sustained-combat survival mechanic. Resists sit at 75/50/64 with cold undercapped, and chaos at -60% is irrelevant under CI. Pantheon Brine King stops freeze and stun chains that would break the flicker loop.
Transitional but the core identity is already visible. Flicker Strike chains through packs, Ephemeral Edge's lightning adds scale off the 4.3k ES pool, and Frenzy charges sustain via Frenzy + Faster Attacks Support + Leap Slam in the weapon (manual priming) plus Warlord's Mark + Mark On Hit Support from the boots for curse-on-hit crit and ES leech. Berserk sits in the helmet for burst windows. Sigil of Power + Cast when Damage Taken Support + Frost Shield in the off-hand provides reactive ES and damage-taken mitigation. The playstyle hasn't reached the frantic ceiling yet — 5.41 attacks per second is modest compared to the aspirational 9.34 — but the chassis is correct.

Endgame L85–94
- The 6-link migrates into a rare Torturer Garb (Rune Keep) swapping Damage on Full Life Support for Lightning Penetration Support. Aegis Aurora is replaced by a rare Blood Guard Titanium Spirit Shield with 60% increased chance to block, Swift Killer and Polymath complete the ascendancy, and Carnage Heart amulet arrives for the leech-damage-amp pair. The Light of Meaning jewel appears at 73% tier adoption.
- Secure Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocating Swift Killer — 63-65% of the tier runs this pair, and the out-of-class pickup doubles the frenzy-on-crit coverage
- Upgrade to Doryani's Prototype (72% aspirational adoption) once Dawnbreaker-style lightning-to-fire conversion is in place — the shared-res broadcast trick lifts the DPS ceiling 10x
- Layer Mageblood for the permanent four-flask effect — 72% of aspirational runs it, and the utility-flask density covers resist caps, movement, and curse-effect reduction

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Sheet DPS on the reference is 166k — well below the tier median of 5.4M. This particular character is under-scaled for its level, but the archetype pattern across 79 builds is clear: Ephemeral Edge (90% adoption), The Light of Meaning (73%), Lethal Pride (71%), Aegis Aurora (67%), Voice of the Storm (63%). Ephemeral Edge's scaling improves to 13% of Player's Maximum Energy Shield as Added Maximum Lightning Damage, and with ES pool now at 4.9k on the reference (median 8.6k) the weapon adds roughly 1 to 1100 lightning damage at median ES investment. The 6-link is Flicker Strike + Multistrike Support + Volatility Support + Close Combat Support + Lightning Penetration Support — Volatility Support at 94% adoption and Close Combat Support at 95% are the tier-defining supports.
Swift Killer is the fourth Trickster ascendancy pick — it grants frenzy-on-crit, turning the 36%+ crit chance from Ephemeral Edge's "50% increased Global Critical Strike Chance" into automatic charge sustain. Polymath adds damage + defence per Power, Frenzy, and Endurance charge type. Soul Drinker (still allocated) converts leech to ES. Carnage Heart adds 1.9% physical attack leech + 34% damage while leeching + 50% total leech rate — with Ghost Reaver that's an ES leech vehicle. A Darkness Enthroned with two Murderous Eye abyssals stacks more flat lightning. The tree now runs Forces of Nature, Arcing Blows, Tribal Fury, Savagery, Frenetic, Coldhearted Calculation, Written in Blood, Mark the Prey.
EHP 50k on the reference (tier median 133k, so this build is noticeably under-invested). At median tier investment: ES 8.6k, armour 42k (Iron Reflexes from evasion 14k), 65% attack block + 65% spell block from the rare Blood Guard shield + Versatile Combatant. Physical damage reduction lands around 90% median via the armour stack. Chaos Inoculation stays universal (96% adoption), Ghost Reaver at 65%, and Iron Reflexes at 91% confirm the defensive pattern.
Discipline at 91% aura adoption is the ES-multiplier engine, Wrath at 89% adds the lightning-damage layer, and Tempest Shield at 44% is the emerging block-chance add-on. Molten Shell on Cast when Damage Taken Support + Sigil of Power in the boots handles spike hits. Chaos resist at -60% remains irrelevant under CI. Spell suppression is 0% — the build has no suppress layer, so spell mitigation is block + ES pool only.
The build starts feeling like it should. Frenzy charges sustain through Swift Killer's on-crit generation — no more Frenzy priming. Flicker Strike chains pack to pack, Leap Slam + Faster Attacks Support + Frenzy of Onslaught (a priming skill for bosses) sit in the weapon. Warlord's Mark + Mark On Hit Support on gloves curses on every teleport for ES leech and endurance-charge generation. Berserk in the helmet adds burst windows — stored rage converts into temporary more-damage / more-action-speed. The primary sensation is block-and-leech — every ES tick restores a chunk, and the Iron Reflexes armour carries hits that slip through. Pinnacle bosses use the Frenzy of Onslaught bridge for sustain against single targets.

Aspirational L95–100
- The aspirational build commits to the Doryani's Prototype + Sorrow Circle shared-resist trick. Doryani's Prototype (72% adoption) broadcasts the player's own negative lightning resist to nearby enemies; Sorrow Circle (a rare Manifold Ring with -72% lightning resist, -249 max life, +50% prefix magnitudes) drives the player's resist down to -190%, and every enemy inside the broadcast aura then takes lightning damage as if it had -190% resist too. Mageblood, Svalinn, and Kalandra's Touch anchor the rest of the gear.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Sheet DPS reads 38.7M at 9.34 attacks per second — right below the tier median of 44.5M. The weapon swaps from Ephemeral Edge on the reference to a rare crit Foil (Kraken Sever, 29% attack speed, 36% crit chance, +46% global crit multi, 14% ele pen, "Hits can't be Evaded") — this particular character is a high-crit-foil build rather than the tier's pure-ES Ephemeral Edge median. Ephemeral Edge is still in 97% of aspirational builds as the default, so the reference is an off-pattern aspirational pivot. The 6-link runs Smite + Elemental Damage with Attacks Support + Close Combat Support + Greater Multistrike Support + Momentum Support + Volatility Support — Greater Multistrike Support hitting 99% adoption and Volatility Support at 99% are the tier signatures, replacing the endgame Multistrike Support + Lightning Penetration Support pair.
Doryani's Prototype's mechanics are the archetype's headline trick. "Deal no Non-Lightning Damage," "Armour also applies to Lightning Damage taken from Hits," "Lightning Resistance does not affect Lightning Damage taken," "Nearby Enemies have Lightning Resistance equal to yours" — paired with Sorrow Circle's -72% lightning and Voice of the Storm's implicit, the player's lightning res drops to -190% and broadcasts that out. Rage Grip warlock gloves add Inflict Lightning Exposure on Hit, applying -12% to Lightning Resistance for an additional layer. Svalinn in the off-hand grants 15% spell block, "Chance to Block is Lucky" (critical with Versatile Combatant dropped this tier), and "Trigger a Socketed Elemental Spell on Block" — the reference sockets Tempest Shield + Molten Shell + Summon Lightning Golem + Sigil of Power for reactive triggers. Cluster jewels carry Feed the Fury, Drive the Destruction, Prodigious Defence, Martial Prowess, Smite the Weak — stacked attack speed and damage. Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocate Swift Killer (93% adoption). Lethal Pride under Kaom in the Karui cluster (97% adoption) conquers the sword/ES wheel. The Light of Meaning stacks 3% ES per passive in radius.
EHP 399k on the reference, near the tier median of 538k. 88% attack block + 89% spell block is the headline defensive number, built on Svalinn's "Chance to Block is Lucky" + the rare Stygian Vise (dropped here for Mageblood) → Svalinn ward conversion. Physical damage reduction 90% via 55.9k armour (Iron Reflexes from 18.9k evasion at median) + 3 endurance charges. 8 Frenzy charges live via Swift Killer crits. Ward 149 from Svalinn plus 4.7k ES give the reactive ES pool, with Mageblood's four-flask permanent-utility covering the remaining gaps.
Chaos Inoculation still 100% universal (99% tier adoption), Iron Reflexes at 97%, Ghost Reaver at 56%, and Precise Technique at 81%. Wrath + Discipline + Determination + Tempest Shield all reserve through Enlighten Support Lv3 and Mageblood's reservation-neutral environment. Chaos resist sits at -60% — still irrelevant under CI, but one CI strip makes every chaos hit lethal. Lightning resist at -190% is THE playstyle mechanic — the build takes 2.9x damage from any lightning hit not covered by Doryani's Prototype's armour-applies-to-lightning line.
The apex Trickster flicker — walk into a pack, Doryani's Prototype broadcasts -190% lightning resist to everything nearby, Flicker Strike teleports through at 9.34 attacks per second, and every hit lands against effectively -200%+ resistance when Rage Grip's lightning exposure stacks. Frenzy charges stay capped via Swift Killer, Leap Slam covers traversal, and Berserk + Vaal Haste provide burst windows. Block at 88/89% means only 11-12% of hits land, and the Iron-Reflexes 90% PDR + armour-applies-to-lightning chain absorbs most of the rest. Mageblood flasks handle ailments, movement, armour, and curse-effect. Pinnacle bosses fall in the standard flicker rhythm — walk up, teleport chain, Doryani's broadcast makes their lightning resist catastrophic, fight ends in seconds.
