Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Freezing PulseBuy Freezing Pulse from Nessa after killing Hillock — one of the strongest caster leveling skills, scales on any int-stick, freezes everything. Arcane Surge Support kept low-level so it procs on 1–2 casts. Flame Dash from Nessa after the Submerged Passage as travel. Any wand or sceptre with added cold damage works — vendor recipe with Sapphire Ring + magic wand + Whetstone.
- Act 2: run Freezing PulseHerald of Thunder from Yeena after the Great White Beast — huge mapping damage at low investment. Added Lightning Damage Support slotted into the 4-link fits the eventual lightning-conversion endgame setup. Bandit reward: help Alira for the mana regen, crit multiplier, and resists — Elementalist scales all three and the crit multiplier specifically feeds the KB crit loop.
- Act 3 (KB swap): run Kinetic BlastThe transition. Pick up Kinetic Blast from Clarissa once you have a physical wand with added damage (vendor recipe works — magic wand + ruby/sapphire/topaz ring + Whetstone). Pierce Support is non-negotiable — without it the first projectile stops dead and you lose all clear. Herald of Ice joins Herald of Thunder — both feed Elementalist's elemental-damage ecosystem. Sniper's Mark from Yeena for single-target. Lab 1 here: Shaper of Storms — lightning scaling kicks in immediately from Herald of Thunder and any added-lightning gem.
- Act 5–6: run Kinetic BlastWrath from Lilly Roth in Act 6 becomes your main aura — single biggest damage multiplier while leveling once lightning conversion is the damage type. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support fills out the 5-link. Summon a Lightning Golem for the attack speed and cast speed buff — starts setting up the Elementalist golem identity. Consider equipping Hrimsorrow gloves if you want to convert to cold instead of lightning (requires tree respec, do it at Cruel Lab if you're committing). Lab 2 in Act 6: Mastermind of Discord — 25% penetration on lightning while Herald of Thunder is up is a massive scaling spike.
- Act 7–9: run Kinetic BlastGreater Volley Support (3.28 Exceptional Support, replaces old GMP) once you can buy a copy from trade — two extra projectiles with less damage penalty. Inspiration Support handles the brutal Kinetic Blast mana cost and boosts damage. Drop Pierce Support if you have picked up pierce from the tree or a Drillneck quiver. Lab 3 in Act 9: Liege of the Primordial — you now get three golems for free, pick up a Flame Golem and Ice Golem as well for the full ascendancy bonus stack.
- Maps L68+: run Kinetic BlastRun Uber Lab at L68 for the final two ascendancy points — typically filling out the Shaper of Storms path or picking up Paragon of Calamity for the elemental reflect immunity + reduced damage taken after a reflected hit. Swap Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support for Lightning Penetration Support in the main link for the penetration stacking. A separate single-target 4-link with Barrage Support is the bossing setup. Push resists to 75% resist before red maps.
How leveling works
Kinetic Blast is a wand attack that fires a single projectile which explodes into several AoE shockwaves on hit, with added damage per nearby projectile. On an Elementalist, the build twists the archetype by going full elemental-conversion — physical damage is converted to lightning or cold via gloves like Hrimsorrow (100% phys-to-cold) or a Cold to Fire Support chain, and then scaled through Shaper of Storms (lightning), Shaper of Flames (fire/ignite), or Shaper of Winter (cold) depending on which conversion you commit to. The canonical build runs Shaper of Storms + Mastermind of Discord for lightning-conversion KB.
Elementalist's appeal here is the golem/herald ecosystem — Liege of the Primordial gives free golem slots and big passive bonuses per golem type, so a three-golem setup layers on top of your Herald of Thunder and Herald of Ice without any real investment. You trade the raw projectile-scaling identity of Deadeye/Ascendant KB for a more elemental-hybrid setup that feels more like a caster-adjacent build using a wand.
You do not level with Kinetic Blast. It needs a wand with added damage and a 4-link before it feels right, plus the mana cost is painful at low levels. The recommended leveling path is Freezing Pulse or Spark for Acts 1–2 (both scale on any wand/sceptre, pair well with Elementalist's elemental-damage tree nodes), swap to Kinetic Blast in Act 3 once Clarissa vendors the gem and you have a wand with elemental damage. The Lab order is Shaper of Storms (Lab 1: lightning scaling, the damage spine), Mastermind of Discord (Lab 2: 25% penetration of an element while you have its herald up — with Herald of Thunder this is massive lightning scaling), Liege of the Primordial (Lab 3: the golem setup), and Uber Lab for the remaining four points of specialization.
Rare jewellery with life and resists plus Hrimsorrow gloves (or the cold-conversion variant) for mid-game are the core gear targets. Tabula Rasa if available. Save currency for the endgame wand and a Doryani's Catalyst if you go lightning conversion — a cheap but powerful sceptre that adds lightning damage and elemental leech.
Gear while leveling
- · Wand: any 1H wand with added physical or elemental damage during the campaign. Vendor recipe (magic wand + topaz/sapphire/ruby ring + Whetstone) for the cheap route. Doryani's Catalyst is an excellent transitional sceptre at L66 — adds lightning damage plus elemental leech, perfect fit for a lightning-conversion Elementalist if you find one cheap on trade.
- · Shield: rare shield with life, resists, and spell/elemental damage. Some variants go dual-wand for extra damage; Elementalist typically wants the shield for the tankiness since you lack dedicated defensive ascendancies.
- · Body armour: Tabula Rasa if available — 6-link trumps any rare. Otherwise 4-link energy shield or hybrid ES/evasion chest with life and resists. Elementalist often runs hybrid life/ES in endgame for the layered HP pool.
- · Helmet: life + resists + ES. The Devouring Diadem is a fun endgame pick for the extra aura reservation. Crown of the Inward Eye if you go high-life.
- · Gloves: Hrimsorrow if you want cold conversion (100% physical to cold damage — free scaling via Shaper of Winter). Otherwise rare gloves with life, resists, and attack speed. Lightning-conversion builds stick to rares.
- · Boots: life, resists, movement speed. Wanderlust in the early acts for freeze immunity.
- · Rings/amulet: life + resists with attribute fix-ups, crit multiplier on the amulet. The Pandemonius amulet is the endgame cold-conversion pick for the chilled-enemies-take-increased-cold-damage modifier. Lightning builds stick to rares.
- · Belt: Heavy Belt, Leather Belt, or Stygian Vise (best base) with life and resists. Bated Breath for ES-focused builds.
- · Quiver: skip until maps. Drillneck once you are in yellow maps is a huge damage upgrade — 100% pierce removes the Pierce Support slot and scales damage per piercing projectile.
- · Flasks: life flask with bleed-removal, mana flask (Kinetic Blast drains mana hard), quicksilver, granite + iron skin, diamond flask once available. Witchfire Brew for the Despair curse on self-cast and damage buff is a strong endgame flask.
Weapon progression
Vendor-recipe magic wands (wand + Sapphire Ring + Whetstone → guaranteed cold damage roll, or Topaz Ring for lightning) through Acts 1–3 while running Freezing Pulse. Around the Kinetic Blast swap in Act 3 you want a rare wand with "added lightning damage to attacks" (or "added cold" if going cold conversion) plus attack speed. Doryani's Catalyst at L66 is a strong cheap transitional sceptre for lightning-conversion Elementalist — elemental leech plus added lightning damage, usually a few chaos on trade. The endgame target is a rare high-base-crit wand (Profane Wand, Imbued Wand, or Opal Wand for the implicit) with attack speed, crit chance, and multiple "added X damage" prefixes — but campaign does not need this.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Elementalist has no dedicated defensive ascendancy node — Paragon of Calamity gives reflect immunity and some damage mitigation but nothing like Unstoppable or Brutal Fervour. Keep life/ES rolls high on every gear piece and do not skip the big life wheels on the tree.
- ! Elemental conversion locks you into one damage type. Hrimsorrow gives 100% phys-to-cold — once you put them on, your tree and gear need to scale cold, and swapping to lightning conversion mid-league requires a full respec. Commit to one path early (lightning is the default canonical pick).
- ! Elemental Overload vs. crit scaling: Elementalist can go either way. EO gives a flat 40% more damage without needing crit chance, which frees up gear. Crit gives higher ceilings but needs more investment. Pick one at Act 3 and do not switch mid-campaign — respeccing costs too much.
- ! Greater Volley Support is the 3.28 Mirage Exceptional Support that replaced Greater Multiple Projectiles. GMP no longer exists. Older build guides referencing GMP should be mentally translated to Greater Volley Support.
- ! Kinetic Blast's mana cost is painful — Inspiration Support is near-mandatory, and either mana-leech on a ring/amulet or a big mana-per-hit roll before maps. Elementalist has no mana sustain in its ascendancy, unlike Hierophant, so gear has to carry it.
- ! The three golems (Lightning Golem, Flame Golem, Ice Golem) from Liege of the Primordial need a Minion Life Support or the Anima Stone + Primordial Harmony jewel combo if you want them to survive red maps. Until then they resummon frequently — not a bug, just how 1-socket golems work.
- ! Lightning penetration stacks: Wrath's penetration, Mastermind of Discord's 25% penetration, Lightning Penetration Support, and Sniper's Mark's penetration all combine multiplicatively. Do not over-invest in penetration once you are past -75% enemy resist effective — there is a soft cap where additional penetration gives diminishing returns.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Swap a golem out for Summon Sacred Wisps as the 6-link expands — Summon Sacred Wisps's 88% tier adoption means the minion-aura damage multiplier is non-negotiable
- Consider The Taming (15% tier) or Yoke of Suffering for ailment-stacking damage multiplier — both amplify shock/chill/ignite simultaneously inflicted by the three Shaper ascendancy nodes
- Target the Headhunter + Mark On Hit Support + Assassin's Mark loop for permanent power-charge generation through rare kills

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The early-mapping reference runs the pure Elementalist shell — four golems resident (Summon Ice Golem, Summon Stone Golem, Summon Flame Golem, Summon Lightning Golem) socketed in the boots for Liege of the Primordial's 40% more damage per golem summoned stacking, plus Shaper of Storms / Shaper of Winter / Shaper of Flames for automatic shock/chill/ignite application. The 6-link in the body armour is Kinetic Blast + Added Lightning Damage Support + Returning Projectiles + Summon Sacred Wisps (88% tier adoption) + Trinity Support (50%) + Volatility Support (41%). Trinity Support cycles elemental resonances to build multiplicative more-damage, and Returning Projectiles (61% adoption) doubles the effective hit count on every wall and edge.
The weapon is a rare Kinetic Wand (Soul Charm) with "Cannot roll Caster Modifiers," +34% global crit multi, 27% crit chance, and triple-element adds — the flat elemental damage feeds Trinity Support's resonance cycle. The helmet runs a Ballista Totem Support + Kinetic Bolt + Added Lightning Damage Support + Momentum Support setup as a secondary damage source (Kinetic Bolt totems plink for cover fire), and the gloves run Spellslinger + Hydrosphere + Tornado — Spellslinger auto-casts Tornado and Hydrosphere on wand attacks, both of which shock and amplify the KB damage. Headhunter is already in the belt (an extremely strong unique for an L83 build). The tree allocates Wandslinger, Infused, Fusillade, Arcanist's Dominion, Shaper of Storms, Heart and Soul, Static Blows, Blood Drinker, Prodigal Perfection, Disciple of the Forbidden, and Ghost Dance (47% tier adoption) is the sole keystone.
Defence is the tier's weak spot — 2.7k life, 1.5k ES, EHP 18.7k. The reference is actually above the tier median of 11.7k EHP because Headhunter + over-invested gear carry this character. Ghost Dance converts spell suppression into evasion-on-hit recovery — with only 13% suppress chance at this tier, the keystone's value is mediocre, but it's what 47% of the tier allocates. Elemental resists are overcapped (+21 fire, +60 cold, +31 lightning) and chaos resist at +58% is genuinely solid through chaos rolls on rings and amulet.
65% attack block / 58% spell block defence is absent at this tier — the build has essentially no reactive block layer, relying on distance (KB's projectile range keeps you off the front line) and the four golems drawing attention. Shield Charge + Faster Attacks Support + Frostblink in the off-hand handle traversal. Pantheon Brine King + Shakari stops freeze/stun chains and caps chaos DoT.
Classic KB wander pattern with heavy background noise. Kinetic Blast fires from the wand, Returning Projectiles makes each shot out-and-back, Shaper of Storms auto-shocks every enemy hit, and Shaper of Flames ensures ignites land on anything flammable. The four golems add ambient damage + Liege of the Primordial's 40% more damage multiplier per summon. Headhunter stat-buffs stack through rare-heavy content, turning each pack into exponentially stronger clear. Single-target comes from Assassin's Mark auto-cast via the wand socket + Haste aura, and Ballista Totem Support'd Kinetic Bolt plinks from the helmet as a cover-fire DPS source. Movement is Shield Charge + Frostblink paired with Quicksilver — not as fast as a Deadeye wander but functional.

Endgame L85–94
- The five-Herald pivot is the endgame identity — Herald of Thunder + Herald of Ice + Herald of Ash + Herald of Agony + Herald of the Hive (granted by Lost Unity, 24% tier adoption) all active simultaneously. Circle of Ambition adds 10% mana reservation efficiency of Herald skills + conditional Herald-of-Thunder / Herald-of-Ice boosts. Kinetic Blast stays the primary skill but the ascendancy pivots to Bringer of Ruin + Bastion of Elements + Shaper of Storms + Liege of the Primordial, dropping the triple-Shaper-ailment setup for a more defensive ascendancy composition.
- Pivot to Kinetic Blast of Clustering (the transfigured variant, tight-cone pattern) for the aspirational tier — the transfigured version dumps more hits into a smaller footprint, which stacks cleanly with Corpse Pact-fed power charges
- Pick up Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocating Shaper of Desolation or a matching notable — 87% aspirational adoption makes this the default damage / ailment amp loop
- Upgrade to the five-aspirational-core pair of Nimis + Dying Sun + Cinderswallow Urn + Headhunter + Impossible Escape — all at 88-93% adoption and all multiplicatively scale KB's projectile output

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Sheet DPS reads 289k at 61% crit chance with 4.6x crit multi — essentially on the tier median of 288.5k. The 6-link is Kinetic Blast + Greater Fork Support + Increased Critical Damage Support + Invert the Rules Support + Summon Sacred Wisps + Inspiration Support. Greater Fork Support adds two forked projectiles, which each detonate their own KB explosion — multiplicative with the Nimis-style return layer that the build hasn't yet added. The rare Omen Wand (Demon Scratch) runs two-crafted mods: Attacks with this Weapon Penetrate 15% Elemental Resistances and 60% increased Spell Damage (which feeds Spellslinger'd spells, not the wand attack itself).
Circle of Ambition is the tier's quietly-dominant prismatic ring: grants +56% cold res while affected by Herald of Ice, +59% lightning damage while affected by Herald of Thunder, "Minions have 7% movement speed" for the golems, and 10% mana reservation efficiency of Herald Skills that lets the build fit five Heralds simultaneously. Lost Unity (Formless Ring, 24% adoption) grants Herald of the Hive at Lv30 — a fifth herald that summons spider-like minions and adds conditional damage. Spellslinger auto-casts Hydrosphere (replaced by Summon Stone Golem of Safeguarding in the reference's glove socket) + Conductivity + Hex Bloom Support + Hexpass Support for curse layering. The tree now runs Bringer of Ruin + Bastion of Elements ascendancy plus Ethereal Feast, Prodigal Perfection, Practical Application, Arcing Blows, Clever Thief, Melding, Deep Wisdom, Golem Commander. Ghost Reaver keystone allocated.
EHP 26k, right at the tier median of 28k. 2.2k life + 4k ES is the hybrid pool, with Ghost Reaver (59% tier adoption) leeching damage to ES. Spell suppression 16% is still low — the build never fully commits to suppression. All four elemental resists overcapped heavily (+43 fire, +137 cold with Circle of Ambition's Herald of Ice line, +58 lightning) and chaos resist at +76% is exceptional. Physical damage reduction 6% via 665 armour is essentially zero — physical mitigation comes from evasion + ES.
Bastion of Elements ascendancy node grants 8% reduced elemental damage taken and prevents reflected elemental damage, a quiet defensive bump. Bringer of Ruin gives Elemental Army skill for free (applying elemental weakness effects). The reference's -54% chaos resist at aspirational suggests the build eventually drops to a CI pivot rather than maintaining positive chaos res. Oriath's End flask chains kill-explosions across packs; The Sorrow of the Divine creates consecrated ground on use with Zealot's Oath during Effect (ES regen off life regen rolls). Pantheon Brine King + Tukohama for stun immunity and totem-stationary regen.
3.33 attacks per second is slow for a wander — noticeably below the Deadeye pace — but each KB shot triggers five Heralds' on-kill effects simultaneously, plus Summon Sacred Wisps' minion-aura damage pulse. Headhunter procs through rare-heavy content, and the five-Herald ambient damage makes pack clear feel layered — KB explosions, Herald of Thunder lightning, Herald of Ice shatters, Herald of Ash fire burst on ignite, Herald of Agony's scorpion minion, Herald of the Hive spiders. Single-target uses the Sniper's Mark + Mark On Hit Support + Assassin's Mark glove link for focused-hit damage. Frostblink covers movement between packs, and Shield Charge sits in the off-hand for zoom-through-pack positioning. Steelskin on Automation handles spike hits.

Aspirational L95–100
- The aspirational pivot is fundamental — Kinetic Blast becomes Kinetic Blast of Clustering (the transfigured tight-cone variant), Chaos Inoculation arrives (70% adoption) alongside Pain Attunement (77%) and Ghost Reaver (73%), and the build borrows Plaguebringer + Corpse Pact out-of-ascendancy through the tree. Foulborn Auxium belt replaces the Stygian Vise for CI-compatible chill/freeze-based-on-ES conversion, Nimis (93%), Dying Sun (91%), Headhunter (91%), Cinderswallow Urn (91%), Impossible Escape (88%), Forbidden Flame/Forbidden Flesh (87%), and Lost Unity (97%) form the universal unique stack. The reference character is specifically a hybrid KB-of-Clustering + Volatile Dead of Seething + Spellslinger setup with Corpse Pact fuelling corpse generation.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Sheet DPS reads 133k on the reference — dramatically below the tier median of 1.4M. This particular character is under-tuned for its gear (L100 but with mixed / off-meta ring rolls); the tier's p75 is 2.15M. The 6-link is Kinetic Blast of Clustering + Greater Fork Support + Summon Sacred Wisps + Void Manipulation Support + Returning Projectiles + Increased Critical Damage Support. Greater Fork Support hits 96% tier adoption, Summon Sacred Wisps stays at 93%, and Invert the Rules Support (86%) is the ladder-wide damage-amplification choice. Volatile Dead of Seething + Desecrate + Spell Cascade Support + Spellslinger in the boots auto-casts corpse-orb detonations on every wand attack — a Necromancer-style background DPS layer borrowed through Corpse Pact.
The wand is a rare Kinetic Wand (Dusk Bane) with "Cannot roll Caster Modifiers," 18% attack speed, 36% crit chance, +116 max mana, three-crafted-mods including Gain 4% of Non-Chaos Damage as extra Chaos Damage and Attacks Penetrate 11% Chaos Resistance — chaos conversion on the wand pushes through pinnacle boss resist layers (75% chaos cap vs 90% ele cap). Foulborn Auxium belt grants Chill Effect and Freeze Duration on you are based on 100% of Energy Shield plus 23% increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills per Power Charge — with Corpse Pact-fed permanent 7 power charges that's a +161% elemental damage multiplier. Foulborn Kikazaru topaz ring stacks attribute conversion. Plaguebringer and Corpse Pact are allocated on the tree (not through ascendancy — they're tree notables in the Witch / Shadow Necromancer-adjacent branches). Watcher's Eye with Zealotry leech-rate multi and Precision crit multi covers the auras. A Megalomaniac medium cluster hits Overwhelming Malice + Precise Retaliation. The Light of Meaning stacks 3% ES per passive in radius.
EHP 119k, close to the tier median of 144k. Chaos Inoculation at 70% adoption is the emerging keystone — when CI is allocated, life locks to 1 and chaos damage does nothing, giving the build's -54% chaos resist a clean pass. The reference runs Chaos Inoculation + 8.2k ES, with 73% attack block + 75% spell block from Rumi's Concoction + rare Titanium Spirit Shield (Vortex Wish, +3% max fire res) + Tempest Shield (88% tier adoption). Spell suppression 69% with 43% effect is a genuine third defensive layer.
Plaguebringer adds an AoE plague cloud that debuffs incoming damage from nearby enemies — a defensive contribution the vanilla Elementalist ascendancy doesn't have. Mystic Bulwark allocated in the tree adds +2% all max resist-equivalent via energy-shield-on-stun. Foulborn Auxium's chill-duration-based-on-ES means chills land briefly, reducing incoming-attack windows. Rumi's Concoction flask adds +11% block + +6% spell block on demand. Chaos resist at -54% is irrelevant under CI. The build has no endurance charges and modest armour — physical mitigation is block + ES + suppression + Plaguebringer debuff. Pantheon Brine King + Abberath for stun and burning-ground immunity.
The apex KB Elementalist experience — 4.52 attacks per second of Kinetic Blast of Clustering, each attack forking via Greater Fork Support and returning via Returning Projectiles, and Spellslinger-triggered Volatile Dead of Seething dumping corpse-orb detonations on every wand swing. Dying Sun flask uptime adds +2 projectiles during effect, Headhunter stat-chains through rare content, Nimis weaponises return projectiles for free, and Cinderswallow Urn recovers ES per ignited-kill (which KB's ignite ascendancy path guarantees). Plaguebringer's wither cloud debuffs ambient enemies, Corpse Pact fuels 7 power charges permanent via Desecrate chain-consume, and Bringer of Ruin's Elemental Army grants auto-exposure on every element. Single-target against pinnacle bosses uses the chaos-conversion-via-wand trick — 75% chaos resist cap is softer than 90% elemental caps, so chaos adds penetrate cleaner. Movement is Shield Charge + Frostblink, Molten Shell + Immortal Call via Cast when Damage Taken Support layered with Bone Offering for reactive block recovery.
