Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Freezing PulseBuy Freezing Pulse from Nessa after killing Hillock. Arcane Surge Support from the Mercy Mission quest — keep it low-level so it procs on 1–2 Freezing Pulse casts. Flame Dash from Nessa after the Submerged Passage. Any wand or sceptre with added cold damage is fine; vendor-craft with Sapphire Ring + magic wand + whetstone.
- Act 2: run Freezing PulsePick up Herald of Thunder from Yeena after the Great White Beast. Added Lightning Damage Support is a big damage bump on a 4-link. Bandit reward: help Alira for the mana regen, crit multi, and resists — this build likes all three. Begin taking Pursuit of Faith path nodes on the tree so you can grab your first totem after Lab 1.
- Act 3: run Freezing PulseControlled Destruction Support from Clarissa (level 18) and Hypothermia Support from the Library quest reward. Run Clarity at a low level for mana sustain while you work toward MoM-equivalent on the tree. Do Lab 1 at the end of Act 3 and take Pursuit of Faith — you now have access to a backup Shockwave Totem for tough rares.
- Act 4–5: run Freezing PulseCold Penetration Support from Petarus and Vanja in Act 5. Start casting Assassin's Mark on rares for crit chance and power charge generation — the totem endgame scales hard on crit. Do Lab 2 in Act 5 and take Conviction of Power. Start collecting a bow and a quiver with any flat added damage or attack speed for the upcoming swap — Ironwood Shortbow / Thicket Bow bases are cheap and do the job.
- Act 6 — the swap: run Kinetic FusilladeThe transition. Respec into Ancestral Bond the moment you can — your own Freezing Pulse stops dealing damage but your ballista totems take over. Socket Kinetic Fusillade in your bow with Ballista Totem Support, Physical Projectile Attack Damage Support, and Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support (GMP is fine too). Drop Herald of Ice, pick up Hatred from the Act 6 quest reward — Hatred is the single biggest DPS multiplier from here to maps. Lilly Roth in Lioneye's Watch vendors every regular gem in the game, so catch up on any support you missed.
- Act 7–9: run Kinetic FusilladeSlower Projectiles Support is a huge damage support for Kinetic Fusillade because the projectiles overlap more densely when they travel slower — pick it up from Lilly in Act 8. Do Lab 3 in Act 9 and take Sanctuary of Thought. Mana becomes your effective HP; start looking at mana rolls on gear instead of (or in addition to) life.
How leveling works
Kinetic Fusillade is a transfigured Kinetic Blast that trades Kinetic Blast's short-range explosion pattern for a tighter volley of projectiles with a built-in overlap multiplier. On a Hierophant running Ancestral Bond, the gem stops being a personal attack and becomes the payload your ballista totems fire — you place totems, they shoot, and your character's job is to keep auras up, curse packs, and stay alive. Because Ancestral Bond zeroes out your own hit damage, you absolutely do not want to level with this skill. The campaign phase is a standalone spell build that you will respec out of the moment Kinetic Fusillade, Ancestral Bond, and a bow transition all come online together.
The recommended path is to level as a Freezing Pulse caster through Acts 1–5 using any wand or sceptre you pick up. Freezing Pulse is one of the strongest self-cast spells in the campaign, scales on any int-stick, and keeps you mobile. The Hierophant ascendancy points you take are Pursuit of Faith (Lab 1, for your first totem and the totem placement speed), Conviction of Power (Lab 2, for power/endurance charge generation and the 8% flat elemental reduction), Sanctuary of Thought (Lab 3, the build-defining MoM-replacement that makes mana your effective HP pool), and Divine Guidance (Uber Lab, for the mana-shield and intelligence scaling). Pursuit of Faith first means that even during the spell-leveling phase, any Siege Ballista or Shockwave Totem you run as a secondary damage source benefits from the totem placement speed.
The transition happens in a narrow window around Act 5 to early Act 6. The Kinetic Fusillade transfigured gem requires a transfiguration font reward from completing Normal Labyrinth — Lilly Roth in Act 6 does NOT vendor transfigured gems, only regular ones. You take Ancestral Bond on the tree, socket Kinetic Fusillade into Ballista Totem Support with two or three support links, swap your wand to a bow, and from that point forward your leveling DPS is totem DPS. Expect one or two rough zones around the swap while your totems catch up on gem levels — bring a few Orb of Scouring / Orb of Transmutation rolled wands as a backup damage source until the totems scale in.
Do not sink currency into leveling uniques for this build — the endgame wants specific Ballista-scaling bow and quiver rolls, and every chaos you spend on a leveling Tabula Rasa you do not need is a chaos you do not have for the transition bow.
Gear while leveling
- · Bow (post-Act 6): any rare Short Bow / Thicket Bow / Death Bow with flat added physical or elemental damage and attack speed — "+X to Level of Socketed Bow Gems" is the jackpot but rare; a 4-link with +1 arrows is far more important than any elemental DPS number during the campaign.
- · Quiver: life, resists, and any "Adds # to # [element] Damage to Attacks" or projectile damage prefix. Blunt Arrow Quiver / Broadhead Arrow Quiver bases have the best implicits while leveling.
- · Body armour: rush a Tabula Rasa if you can find one cheap — the 6-link matters more for the totem setup than any stat roll. If not, a 4-link hybrid ES/evasion chest with life, mana, and resists bridges the gap until a 5/6-link rare.
- · Helmet / gloves / boots: prioritise life, mana, and resists — this is a Sanctuary of Thought build so mana roll on every piece is effective HP. Cap all three elemental resists before entering maps.
- · Rings / amulet: life, mana, resists, crit multi on the amulet. Praxis is a cheap unique ring for mana sustain during the transition if you are starving. Atziri's Foible is a great budget amulet until you get a crit rare.
- · Flasks: life flask with bleed removal, mana flask (Sanctuary of Thought means mana loss hurts), quicksilver, granite + an iron skin roll, and a diamond flask once you can buy one. totem builds are stationary, so defensive flasks matter more than on self-cast.
Weapon progression
Through Acts 1–5 use any wand or sceptre with added cold damage. The magic wand + Sapphire Ring + Blacksmith's Whetstone vendor recipe gives a guaranteed cold damage roll and carries Freezing Pulse through the whole spell phase. Buy a new magic wand every few levels and re-run the recipe — do not sink currency into a rare wand, you are throwing it away at Act 6.
The Act 6 swap wants a bow and a quiver. Any +1 arrows / +1 socketed bow gems short bow is worth a few chaos and carries you through to yellow maps. The endgame target is a rare bow with attack speed, flat added physical damage, crit chance, and ideally "+1 to Level of Socketed Bow Gems" — but this is a red-maps-and-beyond purchase, not a campaign one. Any 4-link or 5-link bow with Ballista Totem Support and two good damage supports will clear yellow maps cleanly once you have Hatred + Divine Guidance online.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Ancestral Bond is a respec trap if you take it too early — the moment you allocate it, your self-cast Freezing Pulse deals zero damage and you are relying entirely on totems. Wait until you have Kinetic Fusillade socketed with Ballista Totem Support in a bow. Keep 3–5 Orbs of Regret on hand for the respec in case you mis-time it.
- ! Kinetic Fusillade is a transfigured gem — it does NOT drop from Lilly Roth. You get it as a reward from the transfiguration font after completing Normal Labyrinth. If Lab 1 is still ahead of you at Act 6, run it before doing the bow swap.
- ! Greater Volley Support is a 3.28 Mirage Exceptional Support and replaces Greater Multiple Projectiles (which no longer exists). It is a tradable gem, not a quest reward — budget around 1 divine for a leveled copy during league start week one, dropping to a few chaos by week two. Until you buy it, run Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support or regular GMP as a placeholder.
- ! totems inherit your auras but you must be alive and in range for them to count — running off-screen while your totems tank a boss is fine mechanically, but if you die the totems die with you. Sanctuary of Thought means mana is your effective HP, so keep your mana flask on a convenient bind and do not let it get drained by Herald of Thunder reserving more than expected.
- ! ballista totems have a limited placement range and replace each other on the FIFO rule (oldest totem dies when you place a new one over the cap). Learn to drop all four totems from cover before engaging the pack — placing totems while being hit is how you die as a Hierophant.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Transition from Yoke of Suffering to a rare crit-mult amulet as crit scaling comes online
- Replace the rare wand with a Kinetic Fusillade +1 bow base when a corrupted implicit rolls
- Pick up Instability on the tree to break through the mid-tier crit plateau

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
This is a ballista totem Hierophant — the player never hits anything directly, the totems do the work. The six-link in the body armour is Kinetic Fusillade + Ballista Totem + Greater Volley + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Added Lightning Damage + Inspiration, planted in groups of four and reinforced by the Rain of Splinters crimson jewel for +2 projectiles per totem. That projectile multiplier plus Greater Volley's arc pattern turns a modest ~194k DPS tooltip into a screen-wide wall of arrows.
The damage identity rides on three keystones that only make sense together. Ancestral Bond forbids the player from dealing damage with hits but grants +1 totem — every attack support in the link routes to the totems. Iron Will converts the 257 Strength the Templar tree picks up naturally into aura scaling for Anger and Wrath, the real elemental multipliers here. Glancing Blows pairs with Aegis Aurora in the shield — doubled block chance for half effect, sitting at 64% attack block + 50% spell block while the shield regenerates the ES pool on every hit.
The ascendancy locks the archetype in: Pursuit of Faith respawns destroyed totems almost instantly and grants +1 totem, Conviction of Power generates power charges and endurance charges on totem kills, and Ritual of Awakening adds another totem and massive cast speed while totems are active. The Fusillade tree notable adds flat projectile damage — with the build's name baked into a passive, you take it.
Defence is Aegis Aurora block-recovery layered over 4,069 life and 68% physical damage reduction from 10.2k armour and 4 endurance charges. The shield's line "+2% to maximum Cold Resist, recover ES equal to Armour on Block" combined with Glancing Blows means every other hit in a pack refills ES and tops up fire/cold/lightning all at 75%. The Yoke of Suffering amulet contributes −19% chaos resist budget pressure (chaos sits at +75 thanks to a well-rolled rare belt here), but exists for its "Elemental Ailments you inflict deal Damage 40% faster" implicit — the totems scorch and shock bosses naturally, and that multiplier is free offensive scaling bolted to a slot that also gives max life.
Stationary and deliberate. The player Shield Chargees into a pack, drops four totems, and the Arcanist Brand + Tornado combo in the helmet auto-applies crowd control while the screen clears. Single-target is slower — you have to replace totems on the boss and stay within their range — but Pursuit of Faith's instant resummon keeps DPS uptime near-perfect. Expect to spend more time running between packs than actually clearing them, which is exactly the relaxed rhythm this archetype is famous for.

Endgame L85–94
- At endgame the build swaps Aegis Aurora from a pure defensive layer into a crit-and-block hybrid: the same shield stays but a rare wand now stacks crit chance and elemental damage, and Sovereignty + Instability notables ladder into the tree. Crit chance jumps from 68% to 97% and crit multiplier from 244% to 427% — the six-link now runs Increased Critical Damage in place of Inspiration and Added Lightning Damage, which is where the 6× DPS gain actually lives.
- Watcher's Eye with Wrath crit multiplier or Anger added fire is the next single-biggest offensive upgrade
- Breathstealer gloves unlock Blight-triggered aura effect for another damage tier
- Corrupting a Kinetic Wand to +1 socketed gems pushes the main link into effective level 22 territory

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The endgame six-link is Kinetic Fusillade + Ballista Totem + Greater Volley + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Increased Critical Damage + Less Duration, with Burning Damage sitting in a 7th socket as a 3.28 Exceptional-support placeholder. Less Duration is the unexpected key piece — totems have a fixed lifetime, and reducing that duration cycles them faster, which combined with Pursuit of Faith's instant resummon means the damage window is always fresh rather than watching a stale totem burn out. The Sniper's Mark + Flame Wall helmet setup is automation: Arcanist Brand auto-applies the mark for +30% projectile damage taken on bosses and drops Flame Wall through which the totems shoot for added flat fire damage.
The gear story shifts toward 3.28 dual-wield totem wands: Abberath's Horn in the main hand (+1 to fire gems, fire penetration) and Ashcaller in the off-hand (triggered Fire Trap on hit). Both are cheap Goat's Horn wands that scale ballista damage through +gem level and flat fire, and the alternating trigger effects give the build a second damage source without taking a link out of the main skill. The Yoke of Suffering amulet persists, but a rare crit-mult two-stone ring has replaced one of the early rings to push crit multiplier over 400%. Divine Judgement on the tree rolls more crit multiplier forward and Sovereignty increases aura effect for the Anger + Wrath + Determination stack, reserving all three through an Enlighten level 3 gem in the boots.
Defence firms up rather than transforming. 43.5k armour + 5 endurance charges push physical damage reduction to 90%, spell block climbs to 75% through Sanctity and aura-effect scaling, and Aegis Aurora still tops up 2,190 ES on every block. Life stays flat at 3,674 — the player is not hit-tanking, the totems are. −19% chaos resist is again the deliberate budget compromise of Yoke of Suffering; the Pantheon (Brine King for stun, Abberath for ignite ground) plus a Quartz Flask for phase-through-mobs keeps the character from getting bodied by chaos-damage rare rolls.
Faster setup, same rhythm. Frostblink replaces Flame Dash for the movement skill, Shield Charge on Momentum + Faster Attacks in the helmet gives a charge-speed engage into packs, and Frenzy is added as a pre-engage button to generate 3 frenzy charges for totem attack speed. Bosses take 4–6 seconds once totems are placed. The build's remaining weakness is the opening placement window on unpredictable mechanics — the first second before the totems exist is the only time the player is actually exposed to incoming damage, and it's where experienced players save their Molten Shell CWDT trigger.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational trades a chunk of defensive ceiling for offensive peaks. The shield and Aegis Aurora stay — they are the non-negotiable spine of the archetype — but the body armour and belt become rare-crafted glass, and Darkness Enthroned + Breathstealer + Megalomaniac push the damage multiplier ceiling while Watcher's Eye converts aura effect into free crit-multiplier and attack-damage rolls.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The main link is pared down to its cleanest form: Kinetic Fusillade + Ballista Totem + Greater Volley + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Increased Critical Damage + Less Duration, all at gem level 20–21 with 20% quality across the board. 2.63M DPS at 92.9% crit chance and 565% crit multiplier is the product of three stacking multipliers: Watcher's Eye adds aura-specific crit rolls (Wrath crit multiplier is the target mod), Megalomaniac delivers three corruption-rolled notables in one slot that extend the projectile and crit trees beyond what the passive tree can reach, and Breathstealer unlocks Blight-triggered buffs for an extra aura-effect pulse mid-fight.
The Cast On Critical Strike + Sniper's Mark + Greater Volley + Frenzy setup in the boots automates two critical things — Sniper's Mark is reapplied on boss crit, and the self-cast Frenzy on crit keeps the three frenzy charges topped up without manual input. Darkness Enthroned with two abyss jewels (here rare Searching Eye jewels rolled for life + crit) gives the belt slot two corruption-tier modifier lines. The weapon swap to Archmage's Carnal Sceptre of Euphoria looks strange at first read — this is not an Archmage build — but it is purely a local mod carrier: "of Euphoria" rolls crit multiplier against rare and unique enemies on the sceptre itself, which scales the ballista crits where they matter. Wandslinger and Deep Thoughts on the tree feed that weapon-crit scaling directly.
EHP drops to 13.2k and this is intentional — the build has committed to being a totem glass cannon at apex. Life stays at 3,652, armour crashes from 43k to 9k, and spell block reverts to 50%. What remains: Aegis Aurora block-recovery on 64% attack block, 60% physical damage reduction from 4 endurance charges, and a seething life flask with the "of Sealing" corrupted-blood immunity. Chaos resist at −52 is the steepest trade-off of the entire progression — the expectation at this tier is that the player is not eating hits to begin with. Pursuit of Faith's instant totem resummon means damage output does not pause when the player has to sidestep, and Frostblink on boots + 51% movement speed gives real evasion in motion. This is a "kill before killed" apex playstyle and the numbers on paper understate how safe it feels in practice, because the player is behind the totems, not in front of them.
The apex feel of a ballista Hierophant: drop four totems, watch the screen delete itself, Shield Charge to the next pack. Less Duration's rapid cycling combined with 3.58 attacks per second base and frenzy-stacked totem attack speed means the audio loop is a continuous thunder of arrows. Uber bosses fall in 3–5 seconds once totems are placed — the hard part is the pre-placement repositioning, and Frostblink + 51% movement speed plus Breathstealer's utility on rare kills makes even that phase quick. The only real threats are instant-cast one-shots through a mid-flask window, which Pantheon Ryslatha partially covers.
