Lightning Arrow

Deadeye

#6 most played skill on the Mirage ladder Built from 3.28 Mirage ladder data Generated 2026-04-20 Data via poe.ninja

Lightning Arrow Deadeye is the point-and-delete bow fantasy. You stand at the back of the screen, loose a shot, and watch a fan of side-beams detonate the pack before the arrow even finishes its arc. The Deadeye ascendancy is built for exactly this — extra projectiles, distance scaling, and movement speed that turns every corridor into a shooting gallery.

Consider this if you want speed, range, and forgiving positioning — a build you can play tired, on a second monitor, one-handed with a drink in the other. Not the right pick if you want a raw-tank frontline character: life pools stay thin across every tier and the defensive identity is "don't get hit," not "soak it."

Is this build for me
Strengths
  • +Screen-wide clear from the first rare bow — side-beams plus bow/quiver extra arrows mean every shot sprays projectile fans
  • +Extreme mobility — Blink Arrow + Dash with cooldown-recovery boots keeps you in constant forward motion
  • +Spell suppression caps early and stays capped — one defensive pillar fully solved from midgame onward
  • +Three-element Trinity Support scaling means every rare bow with flat fire/cold/lightning is an upgrade — no exotic weapon hunt
  • +Huge league-wide popularity — deep pool of reference builds, guides, and ladder characters to copy at every budget
Weaknesses
  • Thin life pools across every tier (3.2k → 3.7k → 5.1k) — block is zero, phys DR minimal, and a single missed suppress can end you
  • Single-target is the archetype's historic soft spot until totems (Artillery Ballista + Focused Ballista) come online at pinnacle tier
  • Mid-to-late gear is expensive — Hyrri's Ire, Hyrri's Truth, and eventually Nimis / Headhunter all stack up fast
  • Phys-reflect maps are a real no-go — the elemental conversion isn't complete enough to fully protect you

Leveling L1–68

What to work on next
  1. Act 1: run Caustic Arrow
Buy Caustic Arrow from Nessa after killing Hillock — it is the smoothest bow leveling skill in the game, with a chaos DoT ground effect that does not care about your weapon roll. Split Arrow is a fine alternative if you prefer an on-hit feel. Dash quest reward from Tarkleigh is your travel skill from day one. Clarity at level 1–2 covers mana while you are still on wooden bows.
  2. Act 2: run Caustic Arrow
Pick up Herald of Ice from Yeena and slot it once your mana pool can host it. Sniper's Mark is also from Yeena — self-cast it on bosses for a hefty single-target multiplier that scales directly with Focal Point later. Blink Arrow becomes available as a second mobility option. Tornado Shot drops as a quest reward from Greust — swap to it if you want harder hits during Act 2. Bandits: kill all for +2 passives — the points are worth more than any single bandit reward for a bow build.
  3. Act 3: run Lightning Arrow
Lightning Arrow unlocks from Clarissa at L28 — this is the transition moment. Slot it into your best link immediately; the chained beams on hit start clearing packs faster than any DoT skill. Hatred from the Library quest replaces Clarity as the main aura for damage. Herald of Thunder from Clarissa layers on top of Herald of Ice once you have mana room. Add a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin for panic defense, and keep Frenzy in a 4-link as your single-target backup + Frenzy charges generator. Lab 1 here: Gathering Winds.
  4. Act 6: run Lightning Arrow
Wrath drops from Lilly Roth at the start of Act 6 — this is the defining lightning aura and is what makes Lightning Arrow scale into the endgame. Run Hatred + Wrath together once you have the reservation room (often after your first mana reservation cluster or a tree respec). Keep Precision at a low level for accuracy without burning too much mana. Endless Munitions from Lab 2 here — the extra projectile count is a massive clear bump on Lightning Arrow.
  5. Act 8–10: run Lightning Arrow
Slot Lightning Penetration Support once you have a 5-link — it overtakes Pierce Support for raw damage once enemies start having real resists. Haste layers in if you can afford the reservation (a mana-mastery -X% reservation passive helps). Blink Arrow becomes a more convenient travel skill than Dash once your bow has real attack speed. Lab 3 in Act 9: Far Shot — the damage-with-distance scaling clicks once you re-learn to hold position at the back of packs.
  6. Maps L68+: run Lightning Arrow
Final 6-link: swap Pierce Support and Mirage Archer Support out for Greater Volley (the 3.28 Exceptional support that replaced Greater Multiple Projectiles) and Inspiration Support. Run Uber Lab as soon as you hit L68 for Focal Point — this is the ascendancy that turns Sniper's Mark into your single-target gel: the mark-on-hit pipeline combined with Focal Point's reshape is how bosses melt. Build a dedicated Barrage Support single-target link (Lightning Arrow + Barrage Support + best supports) in a second 4-link or 5-link for juiced boss fights where Greater Volley becomes counterproductive.

How leveling works

Lightning Arrow is a bow attack that fires a projectile dealing converted lightning damage, then strikes several nearby enemies with additional beams on hit — a clear pattern that scales cleanly with projectile, chain, and pierce support. The Deadeye ascendancy amplifies every part of that pipeline: Gathering Winds stacks attack and cast speed per Tailwind, Endless Munitions grants extra projectile count, Far Shot turns raw distance into a damage multiplier, and Focal Point reshapes your marked target into a single-target dispenser via Sniper's Mark.

Lightning Arrow itself is gated behind Act 3 (quest reward around L28), so you lean on cheap, universal bow skills for the early acts. Caustic Arrow is the smoothest early clear (chaos DoT carpet, works on any bow), Split Arrow is the fallback from Act 1, and Tornado Shot becomes available from Act 2 as a high-ceiling swap for players who want a harder-hitting on-hit skill before Lightning Arrow comes online. The swap to Lightning Arrow happens the moment it drops from Clarissa, and it stays your main link all the way to maps.

Auras build up over time: Clarity from Act 1 for mana sustain, Hatred from Act 3 as the damage aura while leveling, Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder layered in through Acts 2–3, then Wrath from Act 6 as the defining lightning aura for the endgame build. Frenzy is kept in a 4-link side slot as the backup single-target skill — it also generates Frenzy charges directly, which Lightning Arrow loves.

Gear targets are simple: a Tabula Rasa if you can find one for a fast 6-link, a Quill Rain or Storm Cloud as a cheap leveling bow, then life + resists on every rare slot. Save currency for the endgame weapon upgrade — leveling uniques are a trap past the early acts.

Gear while leveling
  • · Weapon: Quill Rain as a super-cheap attack-speed leveling bow from Act 2 onwards, or Storm Cloud if you want pre-rolled lightning conversion for flavor. Vendor-recipe bows (magic bow + topaz ring + Blacksmith's Whetstone) also work to carry you between uniques.
  • · Body armour: rush a Tabula Rasa — a guaranteed 6-link on Lightning Arrow is the single biggest campaign DPS spike you can buy. Fall back to a 4-link evasion chest with life and resists if Tabula Rasa is out of budget.
  • · Helmet: life + resists. Goldrim is a legitimate slot filler until maps — the +30-40% elemental resist covers a huge chunk of your 75% resist cap cheaply.
  • · Gloves / boots: life, resists, movement speed on boots. Wanderlust boots give free frozen immunity + movement speed in early acts.
  • · Rings / amulet: life, resists, attribute fix-ups. A pair of cheap unique rings like Le Heup of All cover dex/str requirements for gem slotting during the campaign.
  • · Flasks: life flask with bleed-removal, a quicksilver, a silver + diamond once crit scaling comes online, and a granite or stibnite for defensive padding. Keep the quicksilver up whenever you are moving between packs.
Weapon progression

Pick up Quill Rain in Act 2 or 3 — it is under 1 alchemy on trade in the first week of a league and doubles your clear speed overnight. Storm Cloud is the alternative if you prefer pre-rolled lightning conversion on Lightning Arrow, though Quill Rain's raw attack speed usually wins during leveling. Around the Act 6–8 transition, swap to a rare bow with "added lightning damage to attacks" and attack speed (trade the base you find — no need to craft one). The long-term endgame target is a Thicket Bow base (inherently fast, high crit) rolled with a Harvest-style +X% added-lightning-as-extra + crit + attack speed + attack projectile speed setup — but this is an endgame project, not a leveling priority. Lioneye's Glare is a famously cheap low-tier endgame anchor if you want zero crit scaling early in maps.

Watch out for
  • ! Do not buy Lightning Arrow from a vendor before Clarissa gives it as a quest reward in Act 3 — her reward is free, and you will waste a trade slot or currency on the vendor purchase for no benefit.
  • ! Far Shot wants you at the back of packs, not in melee range — this is the opposite of how most leveling builds play. Re-learn your positioning the moment you take it in Lab 3, or you will feel a damage drop instead of a damage spike.
  • ! Greater Volley (the 3.28 Exceptional support replacing GMP) is a map-clear support, not a bossing support — the extra projectile count spreads your hits across targets and reduces single-target output. Always keep a Barrage Support-based 4-link or 5-link for real bosses.
  • ! Reservation budget matters — Hatred + Wrath + Herald of Ice + Herald of Thunder + Precision will not all fit without a mana-mastery -X% reservation passive or a tree-side reservation cluster. Drop Precision first if you run out of mana to cast Sniper's Mark.
  • ! Sniper's Mark is a self-cast mark, not an auto-apply — you need to actually cast it on bosses before fights. Bind it to a dedicated key and make the muscle memory habit early; Focal Point's endgame value is zero without the mark up.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

Lightning Arrow at this tier is already a full prismatic bow engine. The main 6-link lives in the body armour (Behemoth Suit, Syndicate's Garb): Lightning Arrow + Mirage Archer + Trinity + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Inspiration + Invert the Rules. Trinity is the signature damage multiplier — the bow (Dragon Reach, Spine Bow) rolls flat 198-314 fire, 41-86 cold, and 16-306 lightning added damage, which keeps all three resonances active without any conversion gymnastics. Mirage Archer adds a second shooter on every attack. The rare Spine Bow bow itself fires 2 additional Arrows and the Hypnotic Flight quiver adds a third, so every shot is already a projectile fan before side-beams even trigger.

The Taming ring stacks a per-ailment 35% increased Elemental Damage with Hits and Ailments multiplier (all three ailment types get applied via Freeze/Shock/Ignite on the ring itself plus Yoke of Suffering's "Your Elemental Damage can shock"). Yoke of Suffering then adds a further 9% increased damage taken per ailment on the enemy, compounding into triple-ailment territory. Nimis in the second ring slot returns every projectile, which converts Lightning Arrow's forward-cone beams into a 360-degree explosion around the target. Gathering Winds + Far Shot are the signature Deadeye ascendancy picks, and the tree already has Forces of Nature, Weapon Artistry, Piercing Shots, and Multishot for elemental conversion and projectile scaling. Headhunter is worn as early as this tier because the ladder reference is unusually well-funded — the build works without it, but rare-monster buff snapshotting is transformative for clear speed.

Defensive layers

Defence is classic evasion-Deadeye. 89% spell suppression is stacked from Atziri's Step's 22% chance to Suppress, tree nodes, and leftover suppress rolls. Evasion sits at 9.8k — not yet at Hyrri's Ire territory but already enough to dodge the vast majority of white-map hits. 3.2k life with Headhunter's +99 life rolls and Yoke of Suffering's +16 all attributes pads the pool. Purity of Elements in the helmet gives flat elemental ailment immunity — no self-shock worries, no freeze locks — and Haste adds attack/movement speed. Resists are comfortably capped (75% cold and lightning) though fire sits at 30% due to gear compromises and chaos lands at -25%. Block is zero and physical damage reduction is a thin 6%; the build leans entirely on evade + suppress + not being hit.

What it feels like

Fast and forgiving. Lightning Arrow at 4.48 attacks per second with +2 additional arrows on the bow plus +1 more on the quiver means every shot sprays the screen with projectile fans. Nimis's return mechanic makes positioning almost irrelevant — aim vaguely in the direction of a pack and the returning arrows clean up anything missed on the forward pass. Blink Arrow in the boot setup handles movement; Frenzy linked with Manaforged Arrows in the gloves sustains Frenzy charges without interrupting the main attack rotation. Sniper's Mark in the main hand links with Mark On Hit for automatic boss/rare target debuffing. Headhunter snapshotting kicks in on the first rare kill and the build feels like a rocket for the rest of the map.

What to work on next
  1. The body armour becomes Hyrri's Ire, the amulet becomes Hyrri's Truth, and the fourth ascendancy (Focal Point + Endless Munitions) is unlocked. The Taming moves from ring 1 to ring 2 and the build adopts a full Cast on Critical Strike + Storm Rain + Tornado side-engine in the body armour, while the main 6-link migrates into the bow itself with Invert the Rules still providing its projectile-behavior manipulation.
  2. Pick up rare Diamond Rings with flat lightning, crit chance, crit multi, and -mana cost rolls to pivot away from Nimis and into Ricochet ascendancy scaling
  3. Swap Cast on Crit + Tornado setup for an Artillery Ballista + Focused Ballista single-target package for pinnacle bosses
  4. Upgrade the Thread of Hope ring of passives into targeted scarce Longshot/Aspect of the Lynx allocations via proper tree routing

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

The rare Spine Bow (Dire Guide) is now a proper crit weapon — 32% crit chance, +16% global crit multi, 12% attack speed, plus heavy flat fire/cold/lightning rolls (203-334 fire, 173-312 cold, 32-494 lightning) that feed Trinity. The bow holds the 6-link: Lightning Arrow + Mirage Archer + Trinity + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Inspiration + Invert the Rules. The body armour (Hyrri's Ire) hosts a second offensive engine: Cast on Critical Strike + Storm Rain + Tornado + Increased Critical Damage + Sniper's Mark + Manaforged Arrows. Every crit from Lightning Arrow procs Storm Rain beams (lightning AoE ground coverage) and Tornado (reflecting projectiles off the spinning vortex — a classic bow Deadeye trick that multiplies hit density). Manaforged Arrows re-auto-fires Sniper's Mark onto any rare/boss on hit.

Hyrri's Truth amulet grants a free Level 30 Precision with 100% increased Mana Reservation Efficiency — a massive crit-chance boost that scales with amulet quality. Focal Point ascendancy makes Sniper's Mark apply its curse-like effect to all enemies near the marked target, dramatically boosting AoE boss damage. Endless Munitions adds yet another +1 projectile. The tree picks up Primal Spirit for life/mana regen. Jewel ring includes a Lethal Pride timeless (Rakiata, Karui) for raw damage notables, and a Thread of Hope for far-away crit/life clusters. The net effect is 1.84M DPS with 69.72% crit chance and 100% hit chance — the build has pivoted from white-map clearer to serious endgame mapper.

Defensive layers

100% spell suppression is now capped thanks to Hyrri's Ire's +30% suppress + tree. Evasion doubles to 20.4k. 3.7k life with 3 power charges and 3 frenzy charges sustained. Resistances cap at 75% across the board (fire now at 80% for elemental ailment reduction). Purity of Elements still runs for ailment immunity. Flesh and Stone in Blood Stance adds flat damage taken reduction from nearby enemies — a Deadeye staple. Vaal Haste is the burst cooldown. 16.8k EHP is above the median (15.2k). The boot Steelskin + Automation combo auto-casts a phys-damage buffer when hit. Pantheons Lunaris + Shakari fit the evasion playstyle perfectly (projectile reduction, chaos dot immunity).

What it feels like

Silky and overwhelming. 3.85 attacks per second is a touch slower than early-mapping because the new bow prioritises crit over raw attack speed, but every shot now crits 70% of the time with 4.7x multiplier, and the Cast on Critical + Storm Rain + Tornado engine layers a second wave of damage on top. The screen becomes a weather system — lightning beams, arrow returns, tornado reflections. Headhunter snapshots keep clear speed surreal. Focal Point + Sniper's Mark makes single-target bosses melt: one Manaforged-auto-curse later and everything near the boss takes amplified damage. Vaal Haste is the panic button for tough content. Blink Arrow handles movement, Frostblink is the emergency dodge.

Aspirational L95–100

What to work on next
  1. The aspirational build drops Nimis, drops Hyrri's Truth, and drops Headhunter in favour of pure rare gear optimised around flat lightning, crit, life, and -mana cost. The body armour stays Hyrri's Ire but the side-engine swaps from Cast on Crit + Storm Rain to a dedicated Artillery Ballista + Focused Ballista totem setup for single-target burst. The ascendancy picks up Ricochet for extra chains, and the tree picks up Longshot, Aspect of the Lynx, and One With Nature.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

At full power: 1.39M DPS sheet (understated — real boss DPS with Artillery Ballista totems layering on top pushes significantly higher), 89% crit chance, 5.57x crit multi, 6.08 attacks per second, 100% hit chance. The Spine Bow (Rift Fletch) rolls 15% attack speed, 27% crit chance, +21% global crit multi, plus the full trinity of flat elemental rolls (162-345 fire, 183-300 cold, 33-607 lightning) that keep Trinity resonance saturated on every swing. The main 6-link lives in the bow: Lightning Arrow + Trinity + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Inspiration + Increased Critical Damage + Greater Chain. Greater Chain replaces Mirage Archer — the build now chains to chain the side-beams between enemies for absurd clear coverage, while the totem package handles single-target.

The body armour runs Artillery Ballista + Focused Ballista + Elemental Focus + Elemental Damage with Attacks + Increased Critical Damage + Inspiration — four totems that rain arrows on whatever the player aims at. Elemental Focus sacrifices ailment application on the totems but they don't need it (the main attack handles ailments). The gloves host Sniper's Mark + Mark On Hit + Purity of Elements + Herald of IceHerald of Ice adds a shatter explosion on kill for extra clear. Aspect of the Lynx adds attack speed + crit chance while moving. Longshot scales damage by distance, pairing perfectly with Far Shot. The Agate amulet adds +42 strength, +24 str/int, 25% crit chance, +35% crit multi, and -8 mana cost. Both rare Diamond Rings stack 30% global crit chance + -mana cost + flat lightning. Brutal Restraint (Asenath, Maraketh) replaces the Karui timeless for the Maraketh conqueror notables.

Defensive layers

EHP 22.1k — a clean 50% increase over endgame thanks to 5.1k life (up from 3.7k), 25.5k evasion, and full res caps including +38% chaos resistance. 93% spell suppression holds. 4 frenzy charges + 3 power charges sustained via Power Charge On Critical + Aspect of the Lynx loops. Flask setup includes a Terrified Divine Life with instant-on-low-life recovery, Quicksilver/Silver/Jade for movement + evasion, and a Diamond for crit chance. The boots (Infiltrator Boots) add 5% increased Action Speed and 32% cooldown recovery of travel skills — the latter doubling the effective uptime on Blink Arrow and Dash. Pantheons swap to Arakaali + Yugul for dot/reflect safety against endgame pinnacle content. Chaos resistance jumps from -21% at endgame to a positive +38% here thanks to the Stygian Vise belt's +35% chaos and triple-stacked rare chaos rolls across gloves, boots, and the belt.

What it feels like

The apex Lightning Arrow experience: 6.08 attacks per second with chain arrows turning every pack into a shatter-chain cascade, while the Artillery Ballista quad-totem setup automatically handles single-target whenever the player stands still for half a second. Ricochet ascendancy adds more projectile chains on top of Greater Chain. Blink Arrow + Dash with 32% cooldown recovery means near-continuous teleportation. Summon Lightning Golem adds passive cast speed / attack speed. The build clears high-investment content (deep Delve, Uber bosses, T17 maps) with the same forward-motion fantasy as endgame, just with higher ceilings and better defences. Headhunter is optional at this point — the flat stats on a well-rolled Stygian Vise + double Diamond ring setup come close to matching it without the rare-kill dependency.
