Righteous Fire Elementalist is the burn build for players who want a bigger damage ceiling than the Chieftain version trades for. You set yourself on fire, walk into the pack, and the aura ignites everything around you — but where Chieftain leans on physical mitigation and life regen, Elementalist pours the ascendancy's damage-multiplier stack onto the burn and scales it through overcapped resistances on a late-game Nebulis.

Consider this if you love the set-yourself-on-fire fantasy but want the endgame payoff to feel explosive rather than immortal. Flag up front: this is a slow-burn archetype, and the ladder shows the pure RF identity really snaps online at the aspirational tier — earlier tiers often play adjacent setups while funding the key uniques. Not the right pick if you want instant power from level one, or if you're squeamish about spending a league chasing the gear that unlocks the real build.

Is this build for me
Strengths
  • +Shaper of Flames means every hit ignites regardless of damage type — burn propagates through the whole pack without setup
  • +Mastermind of Discord applies -25% fire resistance via fire exposure on hit, stacking with Flammability curse for a massive effective-res shred
  • +Nebulis + ~200% fire overcap at aspirational turns defensive stacking directly into offensive multiplier
  • +Primal Aegis absorbs elemental damage for your party — a real group-content perk other RF variants lack
  • +Scales cleanly into full armour-stacker with Kaom's Heart + Mageblood once the budget arrives
Weaknesses
  • The ladder reference builds at early and endgame tiers aren't actually running Righteous Fire as the main skill — they mine Glacial Cascade of the Fissure or curse-detonate with Doom Blast until the aspirational RF pivot is funded
  • Lighter physical layer than Chieftain — no Valako, Storm's Embrace, less native life regen, so physical one-shots are a real problem until Kaom's Heart + armour flasks close the gap
  • Self-degen is harder to sustain than on Chieftain — Tasalio, Cleansing Water's 8% life regen isn't available, so max fire res overcap has to do the work instead
  • The aspirational pivot is gear-gated on multiple unique drops at once (Nebulis, Kaom's Heart, Mageblood, Sublime Vision) — budget leagues rarely reach it

What to work on next
  1. Act 1: run Holy Flame Totem
Witch can't get Holy Flame Totem as a starter reward — buy it from Nessa post-Hillock (Witch has access to the gem because she meets the int requirement). Plant two totems, they do the work while you run around. Pick up Flame Wall from Nessa for a cheap damage booster on the totems' line. No auras yet — save mana for Purity of Fire in Act 2.
  2. Act 2: run Holy Flame Totem
Purity of Fire drops as an Act 2 quest reward (Sharp and Cruel) — slot it immediately even unlinked. Bandits: kill all for +2 passives. Grab Flammability from Intruders in Black and self-cast it on rares. Combustion Support from the same quest is a meaningful ignite-scaling boost for the totem setup.
  3. Act 3: run Holy Flame Totem
Buy Scorching Ray from Clarissa at L12 as a single-target. Lab 1 at end of Act 3: take Shaper of Flames — every fire hit from you now always ignites, which is the entire identity of this RF variant. Grab Herald of Ash from Clarissa for extra burn scaling, and pick up Flame Dash for movement.
  4. Act 4–5: run Scorching Ray
Scorching Ray becomes your main damage — the fire resistance debuff from channelling stacks with Flammability and Shaper of Flames' ignite for a layered burn. Pick up Vitality (Act 4 Kitava prep) and use Steelskin as panic. Lab 2 in Act 6: take Mastermind of Discord — the -25% fire exposure on enemies is the single biggest ascendancy damage multiplier in the build and basically doubles your Scorching Ray DPS overnight.
  5. Act 6–7 (L45+): run Scorching Ray
Equip Rise of the Phoenix at L45 — non-negotiable for Elementalist because your baseline regen is lower than Chieftain. Pick up Determination from Act 6 Brine King for flat phys mitigation. Wire up a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Immortal Call + Molten Shell defensive setup. Start stacking life regen rolls on every piece of gear — Elementalist needs 2.5%+ regen to sustain RF, noticeably more than Chieftain's 2%.
  6. Act 8–9 (L62 RF transition): run Righteous Fire
The transition — slightly later than Chieftain because Elementalist's regen ceiling is lower. Requirements before you cast Righteous Fire: (1) 78% resist+3 overcap with Purity of Fire active, (2) at least 2.5% life regen per second, (3) Rise of the Phoenix equipped, (4) Lab 2 Mastermind of Discord allocated. If any one is missing, delay by one more act — the Scorching Ray phase carries cleanly into white maps. Keep Scorching Ray slotted as a single-target even after transition; RF alone is too slow for bosses at this stage.

Kitava fight: drop Righteous Fire during the -30% res phases. After Act 10, fire res uncaps at 75% resist — re-verify overcap before running maps. Lab 3 in Act 10: take Heart of Destruction. Add Discipline if you have an energy shield base to feed Primal Aegis into — Elementalist benefits from hybrid life/ES gear more than Chieftain does. Uber Lab ASAP for Primal Aegis — the aegis shield is the defining defensive layer that makes Elementalist's lower regen survivable in red maps.

How leveling works

Righteous Fire on an Elementalist plays differently from the Chieftain version despite using the same core skill. The Chieftain is a classic "max life + regen" tank that treats RF as a pure self-degen aura; the Elementalist is an ignite-scaling caster that treats RF as a burning ground (because RF IS a burning ground) and stacks ignite damage on top via Shaper of Flames. It has lower raw tankiness than Chieftain but higher ceiling damage, and the Primal Aegis layer gives it a unique defensive rotation that no other RF ascendancy can replicate.

The ascendancy order is: Shaper of Flames (Lab 1 — your fire hits always ignite, turning every enemy into a passive burning target that Righteous Fire then tops up), Mastermind of Discord (Lab 2 — -25% fire resistance exposure on enemies is the single biggest ascendancy damage multiplier in the build), Heart of Destruction (Lab 3 — fire penetration vs rares and bosses plus a more-damage multiplier while in the centre of the map), Primal Aegis (Uber Lab — elemental damage taken reserved to a regenerating nearby aegis shield, which is the defensive layer that replaces Chieftain's regen).

Two pivot options emerge in early maps, and both are worth planning for during the campaign. The default is a standard rare-gear RF Elementalist — runs Determination, Purity of Fire, and Discipline, scales fire damage over time on helmet enchant and amulet/jewels. The high-investment pivot is the The Annihilating Light variant — a unique two-handed mace that grants triple spell damage at the cost of -75% to all elemental resistances, which Elementalist compensates for with Primal Aegis absorbing the incoming ele hits. This is an "endgame aspirational" pivot, not a campaign target — plan the default build for the first maps and decide on the Annihilating Light swap around red maps.

The leveling path is close to the Chieftain: Holy Flame Totem + Scorching Ray through Acts 1–5, Rise of the Phoenix at L45, the RF transition around L60 after Lab 2 Mastermind of Discord is online. The key difference from Chieftain is that Elementalist has LESS baseline regen — so the transition requires careful gear stacking. You need 2.5% life regen (not just 2% like Chieftain) and Rise of the Phoenix MUST be equipped before you cast RF.

Do not sink currency into leveling uniques beyond Goldrim, Wanderlust, Rise of the Phoenix at L45, and Tabula Rasa if cheap. Save the chaos for a +1 fire gems sceptre, life/regen rares, and eventually the The Annihilating Light pivot if you decide to go there.

Gear while leveling
  • · Weapon: any +1 to Fire Skill Gems wand or sceptre levels your Scorching Ray and Righteous Fire. Craft with Essence of Rage. Weapon damage is irrelevant. Pivot target (maps): The Annihilating Light two-handed mace — triple spell damage at the cost of -75% all ele res, balanced by Primal Aegis.
  • · Body armour: Tabula Rasa until maps for the 6-link. After Lab 3, swap to an armour/ES hybrid chest with life, resists, and ideally regen. Doryani's Prototype is the endgame goal but NOT a campaign upgrade — zeroes fire res and kills you under RF.
  • · Helmet: prioritise life and resists during the acts. Craft the "Righteous Fire has X% increased damage" enchant once you can farm it. A Devoto's Devotion is a strong movement-speed alternative if you're not resist-starved.
  • · Gloves: rare gloves with life, resists, and ideally life regen%. Elementalist's lower regen ceiling means you want regen on every slot that can roll it, not just amulet.
  • · Boots: Wanderlust through early acts for freeze immunity + move speed. Swap to rare boots with life + 30% movement + three resists by Act 6. Kaom's Roots is NOT recommended here — Elementalist wants mobility for positioning relative to Heart of Destruction's centre-of-map multiplier.
  • · Rings: life, fire resistance, life regen%, and any "damage over time" multiplier you can find. Le Heup of All works fine through Acts 1–6. Kikazaru is a cheap life-regen unique ring that's particularly valuable for the transition window.
  • · Amulet: target a fire-damage amulet with "regenerate X life per second" for the transition — absolutely mandatory on Elementalist, more so than Chieftain. Anoint Celestial Punishment or Blast Radius once you can afford the oils.
  • · Flasks: granite with "of Iron Skin", bubbling life flask with "of Staunching" (bleed removal), ruby flask is NON-NEGOTIABLE, quicksilver, and a basalt flask once you can buy one. A divine flask with "of the Golem" for regen is particularly valuable on Elementalist during the campaign.
  • · Belt: Meginord's Girdle is a cheap +strength + life regen unique that shines during the RF transition. Swap to a rare Stygian Vise with life + resists once in maps for the abyssal socket (abyss jewels roll fire damage over time multi).
  • · Jewel sockets: prioritise life, fire damage over time multi, and regen rolls on rare jewels. Abyss jewels in a Stygian Vise can roll "fire damage over time multi while affected by Purity of Fire" which is a direct damage multiplier for RF.
Weapon progression

RF Elementalist does not scale with weapon damage — same as Chieftain, the skill is a self-cast degen that scales with maximum life, fire damage over time mods, and skill level. Vendor-recipe early: magic wand + Ruby Ring + Orb of Alteration for a rolled fire wand. Around L20 craft a "+1 to Level of Fire Skill Gems" wand or sceptre with Essence of Rage.

The standard endgame upgrade is a +2 Fire Gems / +1 Socketed Gems sceptre with spell damage and cast speed — a multi-divine purchase that waits until red maps. One +1 fire sceptre with a shield carries you comfortably to maps.

The ambitious pivot target is The Annihilating Light — a two-handed mace that grants triple spell damage at the cost of -75% all elemental resistances. Elementalist is the only RF ascendancy that can seriously consider this weapon because Primal Aegis absorbs the incoming elemental damage that the res penalty would otherwise let through. This is a red-maps pivot, NOT a campaign upgrade — DO NOT equip it before you have Primal Aegis from Uber Lab, at least 5000 maximum life, and a ruby flask active, or you will die instantly under your own RF.

Nebulis is the alternative high-investment wand pivot for a hybrid RF + elemental-spell-damage build — it scales cold and lightning off your maximum cold/lightning resistance, which pairs with Primal Aegis's elemental absorption. Similar caveat to Annihilating Light: a red-maps pivot, not a campaign plan.

Tree to aim for (by level 68)
Holy Fire Sanctity Cruel Preparation Celestial Punishment Blast Radius Arcane Potency
Watch out for
  • ! Elementalist needs MORE life regen for the RF transition than Chieftain does — target 2.5%+ regen, not the 2% floor that carries Chieftain. This is because Elementalist's ascendancy gives zero direct regen bonuses (Chieftain has Ramako; Elementalist has none). The extra margin comes from gear and tree nodes — plan for it during the acts, don't try to patch it at L60.
  • ! Kitava at the end of Act 10 cuts all resistances by 30%. Drop Righteous Fire before the resist phases. After killing Kitava, fire res is uncapped — re-verify 78% resist overcap before running maps.
  • ! Elemental reflect map mods will kill you under Righteous Fire. Elementalist has NO phys-reflect protection and much weaker ele-reflect protection than Chieftain — always check map mods in white/yellow maps and reroll reflect. This is more dangerous on Elementalist than on Chieftain by a noticeable margin.
  • ! Primal Aegis is a defensive layer, not a regen layer — it absorbs incoming elemental hits until it's drained, then regenerates when you stop taking hits. This means consecutive hits (like a boss's chained slam) can still oneshot you even with Primal Aegis up. Treat it as "you get one free mistake per fight", not "ele damage doesn't matter".
  • ! The The Annihilating Light pivot is NOT a campaign plan — equipping it before you have Primal Aegis, Rise of the Phoenix, a ruby flask active, and at least 5000 max life kills you instantly under your own RF. Plan the campaign for the default build and only pivot to Annihilating Light in red maps, not before.
  • ! Doryani's Prototype is tempting as a "max ele res floor" item but has the opposite problem on Elementalist vs Chieftain: it zeroes your fire res, which under RF deletes you. Do NOT equip Doryani's during the campaign. If you want max-res stacking, go Loreweave instead (caps res at 80% but doesn't zero anything).
  • ! 3.28 Mirage changed the Exceptional Support gem lineup — some old Awakened fire-DoT supports (Awakened Burning Damage, Awakened Swift Affliction) were replaced by new Exceptional versions with different names. Check poe.ninja or the trade board for the exact Mirage replacements before buying — copy-paste 3.27 guides will list supports that don't exist anymore.

What to work on next
  1. Decide early which path you want: follow the curse-detonate reference that the ladder actually plays (atypical for the guide name but the median ladder build), or force Righteous Fire now by copying the Chieftain template onto an Elementalist tree
  2. Aim for Shaper of Flames + Mastermind of Discord as the fourth and third ascendancy points — these unlock the canonical RF Elementalist identity that the aspirational tier commits to
  3. Target a Legacy of Fury body armour or Cloak of Flame when you pivot — both lift Righteous Fire's burn damage ceiling hard and cost pennies early in the league

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

Flag first: the L82 reference here is not playing Righteous Fire as the main damage skill. The build is actually a curse-detonation hybrid using Foulborn Doedre's Scorn helm (Socketed Gems are Supported by Level 30 Impending Doom + 37 to 71 chaos damage for each curse on enemy), Vixen's Entrapment gloves to trigger a second curse on cast, and Doom Blast as a socketed main. Curses land via hit, Impending Doom Support detonates them, and Doedre's Scorn's per-curse chaos damage line scales on top. The rare Platinum Kris (+32% chaos DoT multi, 67% increased chaos damage, +24% DoT multi) and Whispers of Infinity (skills cost ES instead of mana/life) route the build through chaos DoT and ES-cost, not fire burn.

On the ascendancy tree the reference allocates Bastion of Elements, Shaper of Storms, and Liege of the Primordial — the lightning-exposure + golem-buff Elementalist path, not the fire path. Shaper of Flames is missing entirely at this tier, which tells you the build hasn't committed to the Righteous Fire identity yet; it's playing the Elementalist curse-on-hit chaos hybrid that the ladder shows is actually meta for this ascendancy until the aspirational pivot.

This is atypical for a guide titled "Righteous Fire Elementalist." The ladder data shows Righteous Fire commitment really happens at L95+ — which means at early mapping, the practical progression is either (a) follow this curse-detonate reference directly, or (b) play a Chieftain-style RF on an Elementalist tree (Shaper of FlamesMastermind of Discord) and carry forward. Both paths end up in the same endgame RF aspirational slot.

Defensive layers

The reference defensive stack is front-loaded: 5.7k armour, EHP 140k (inflated by Bastion of Elements's elemental-damage-to-nearby-allies absorption), 78% attack block + 78% spell block through Aegis Aurora (recover energy shield equal to 2% of armour when you block), and 52% physical damage reduction. Replica Soul Tether belt adds Corrupted Soul (5% of max life as extra ES) plus the corpse-on-block loop. Chaos resist is already +75% from Doedre's Scorn + rare ring rolls because the offensive side is chaos DoT, not fire — this is the single biggest departure from the Chieftain RF template, which typically runs chaos resist negative at this tier.

What it feels like

Walk into a pack, Shield Charge through, curses from Vixen's Entrapment stick on every hit, Impending Doom Support detonates them a quarter-second later, Doedre's Scorn's per-curse chaos damage hits, and the pack dies. Flame Dash or Frostblink replaces positioning. It's closer to a bomber playstyle than a canonical RF stand-and-exist, but the ladder says it out-clears actual L82 RF Elementalist attempts handily. If you want the real RF feel at this tier, respec the Doedre's Scorn for a rare Lunaris Circlet or Legacy of Fury, drop the Doom Blast 6-link for Righteous Fire + Elemental Focus + Burning Damage + Swift Affliction + Efficacy + Lifetap, and accept the DPS drop until the endgame tree unlocks.

Endgame L85–94

What to work on next
  1. At endgame the ladder has doubled down on the non-RF path: the L92 reference runs Glacial Cascade of the Fissure mines socketed in a rare Archdemon Crown (+2 socketed skill gems, 30% more elemental damage, +3% socketed crit chance), with High-Impact Mine Support + Minefield Support + Charged Mines Support layering. Mageblood is on the belt, Taste of Hate gives cold conversion, and the Elementalist tree has moved fully to Heart of Destruction + Mastermind of Discord — the cold-exposure + penetration path. Chaos Inoculation replaces the life-based defence. The early-tier Doom Blast curse detonate and the aspirational tier's canonical Righteous Fire are two different builds with the endgame tier as a third distinct archetype sharing only the Elementalist ascendancy.
  2. If you're committed to ending up on Righteous Fire, start the aspirational pivot now by farming Nebulis, Kaom's Heart, and a fourth ascendancy respec into Shaper of Flames
  3. If you like the mine playstyle, keep it — the aspirational RF transition is gear-gated and you can happily farm pinnacle content on this setup while funding the swap
  4. Swap the plain Archdemon Crown for one with Empyrean Peak / Sorrow Shelter rolls when the budget climbs — the +2 level and 30% more elemental damage socketed-gems lines scale harder once you're running Righteous Fire in the helm

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

The endgame main engine is Glacial Cascade of the Fissure as a mine — 9.12M DPS at 94% crit chance and 5.79x crit multi, firing 12.6 effective casts/sec through Minefield Support + Charged Mines Support overlap. The Archdemon Crown's socketed Hypothermia Support + 30% more elemental damage line is doing the same work that a 6-link would in a typical RF build. Circle of Ambition ring curses enemies with Frostbite on hit (-45% cold res) and layers herald-effect scaling on top. Rage Talons gloves hit 49% increased damage against chilled enemies — the whole build is built around chill-stacking cold mines, not fire burn.

Elementalist ascendancy is now Bastion of Elements + Liege of the Primordial + Heart of Destruction + Mastermind of Discord. Mastermind of Discord's fire/cold/lightning-exposure-on-hit line triggers cold exposure from the mines, stacking with Frostbite, Rage Talons's inflict-cold-exposure-on-hit line (-12% cold res), and a Foulborn Le Heup of All for raw resist compression. The sheet DPS jumps 9x from early mapping because mines scale with crit and multi in a way that Doom Blast's curse-detonate could not.

Defensive layers

Chaos Inoculation (via Bastion of Elements's implicit CI-compatible routing) takes life to 1 and leans entirely on 6.9k energy shield. EHP 171k is the double-block + aegis absorb stack — Aegis Aurora carries forward for recover ES equal to 2% of armour when you block, with 9.8k armour supplying the armour pool, 69% attack block + 75% spell block via Death Duty Titanium Spirit Shield + Glancing Blows-compatible tree notables. 58% physical damage reduction + 3 Endurance charges + 3 Frenzy charges layer on top. Chaos resist -60% is the cost of CI — incoming chaos damage bypasses ES entirely, which is the one remaining death pattern on this build.

What it feels like

Mine playstyle, not aura playstyle. You throw-detonate a pile of Glacial Cascade of the Fissure mines on a pack, they explode in overlapping ring patterns, chill applies, Frostbite and cold exposure strip resist, everything dies in a single detonation. Mageblood keeps Taste of Hate + Jade + Diamond + Granite flasks permanently live, which stacks evasion + armour + crit chance + cold conversion into one passive buff. Boss rotations are stand in melee, throw-detonate until they die — 9.12M DPS is enough to push pinnacle content.

Aspirational L95–100

What to work on next
  1. This is where the guide finally delivers what it promised. The L100 aspirational reference throws out the Archdemon Crown mine setup and the Doom Blast / Glacial Cascade of the Fissure path entirely. Nebulis comes in on the weapon, Kaom's Heart replaces the evasion chest for +1220 maximum life (no sockets — the RF 6-link moves to the helmet), the helmet becomes a Sorrow Shelter Archdemon Crown with +2 socketed skill gems + Supported by Level 20 Burning Damage + Supported by Level 20 Increased Area of Effect + 30% more elemental damage, and Mageblood goes on the belt. Elementalist ascendancy is finally Shaper of Flames + Liege of the Primordial + Heart of Destruction + Mastermind of Discord — the fire-burn identity the guide title implies. Blood Magic replaces CI because Kaom's Heart demands life scaling.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Mechanics

The damage engine is now canonical RF. Righteous Fire is the main gem, socketed in the Sorrow Shelter helm with Elemental Focus Support + Swift Affliction Support + Lifetap Support plus the helm's native Burning Damage Support + Increased Area of Effect Support + 30% more elemental damage line — effectively a 7-socket burn stack crammed into a 4-link slot. Nebulis scales damage off overcapped resistance: at 90% max fire, 90% max cold, 90% max lightning with 43% fire overcap, 27% cold overcap, 16% lightning overcap, and 23% chaos overcap, the weapon prints roughly 860% increased elemental damage on top of base scaling. Shaper of Flames guarantees ignite on every RF tick, Mastermind of Discord applies fire exposure (-25% fire res) on hit, and Heart of Destruction adds more multiplier vs rares and uniques.

Foulborn Rathpith Globe off-hand contributes 5% increased damage over time per 100 player max life — at 17.5k life, that's +875% DoT multiplier directly on the RF burn. Foulborn Null and Void gloves give 25% increased life regen rate and Rampage for on-hit clear. Defiance of Destiny amulet converts 24% of missing unreserved life into the incoming-hit absorb pool, a huge implicit life buffer. Sublime Vision prismatic jewel locks the build into Malevolence-only aura mode for 35% increased aura effect on you + one additional curse while affected — with Flammability and Punishment running via Bane, that's a second curse on top of the fire-res shred stack. The Adorned multiplies every synthesised Vivid Crimson Jewel of Zealousness (+8% fire DoT multi, 7% max life, 5% increased AoE) in the tree — eight of those jewels combined through The Adorned is the scaling ceiling. Melding of the Flesh caps all elemental resists to your highest (fire) at 94% max.

Defensive layers

17.5k life, EHP 110k, 94% max fire resistance with 43% overcap, 4.5k life regen, 75% chaos resist (finally capped through The Light of Meaning radius bonuses and rare ring rolls), and Defiance of Destiny's missing-life-on-hit absorb. Mageblood keeps Oriath's End (on-kill explode chain), Ruby Flask (fire conversion), Silver Flask (curse immunity), and Quicksilver (movement) permanently up. Physical damage reduction 31% is lower than the endgame mine build because armour-stacking isn't the pillar here — Kaom's Heart's flat life, 4.5k regen, Melding of the Flesh res cap, and Defiance of Destiny's absorb layer are. Arctic Armour and Molten Shell aren't taken because Sublime Vision disables non-Malevolence auras. Pantheon is Lunaris + Garukhan. Primal Aegis's elemental-damage-to-nearby-allies absorption covers party play.

What it feels like

The canonical RF Elementalist power fantasy finally online. Shield Charge into a pack, the aura burn plus Null and Void's Rampage plus Oriath's End's kill-explosion plus Shaper of Flames's guaranteed ignite means packs evaporate on approach. Bosses fall to Flammability + Punishment curse stack + Mastermind of Discord's fire exposure + Nebulis's overcap multiplier + Rathpith Globe's life-scaling DoT multi — with all of those stacked, a single RF tick against a pinnacle boss easily crosses 3.5M DPS. No aiming, no cast rhythm — Phase Run and Withering Step in the gloves give movement buffs, Automation keeps golems alive, and the whole rotation is walk-forward + occasional flask press.
