Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Freezing PulseBuy Freezing Pulse from Nessa after killing Hillock — easiest self-cast spell to carry Act 1 on any sceptre or wand with added cold. Arcane Surge Support from the Mercy Mission quest; keep it low-level so it procs on 1–2 casts and refunds mana. Flame Dash from Nessa after the Submerged Passage. Vendor-craft a magic wand with Sapphire Ring + Blacksmith's Whetstone for guaranteed cold damage.
- Act 2: run Lightning TendrilsSwap main skill to Lightning Tendrils once you hit L12 — it starts pointing your gem levels and tree nodes at lightning damage for the eventual Shock Nova of Procession pivot. Pick up Herald of Thunder from Yeena after the Great White Beast. Bandit reward: help Alira for mana regen, spell crit multi, and resists — a three-for-one deal this build wants every stat of.
- Act 3: run Lightning TendrilsControlled Destruction Support from Clarissa at L18 and Lightning Penetration Support from the Library quest reward. Run Clarity at a low level for mana sustain until Sanctuary of Thought is unlocked. Do Lab 1 at the end of Act 3 and take Pursuit of Faith. After Lab 1 completes, check the transfiguration font — the Shock Nova of Procession reward is the whole point of rushing the Lab on this build.
- Act 4 — the Shock Nova swap: run Shock Nova of ProcessionSocket Shock Nova of Procession into your best 4-link and start leaning into the cone. The gem scales hard on lightning damage and spell crit, so keep re-rolling your weapon for better flat lightning and spell damage every few levels. Start casting Assassin's Mark on rares for spell crit chance and power charge generation. Pantheon: Soul of the Brine King for stun immunity during cast animations — Shock Nova of Procession has a real cast time and getting stunned mid-cast kills you on Act 4 bosses.
- Act 5: run Shock Nova of ProcessionSpell Echo Support from Clarissa at L38 nearly doubles your cast rate and turns the cone into a continuous wall of overlapping rings. Do Lab 2 at the end of Act 5 and take Conviction of Power — you now generate power charges reliably and convert every fifth charge into an endurance charge for the 8% flat elemental reduction layer. Start collecting a magic or rare spell damage wand / sceptre as an upgrade over your vendor-crafted cold stick.
- Act 6–9: run Shock Nova of ProcessionLilly Roth in Lioneye's Watch vendors every regular gem in the game, so catch up on Wrath and Elemental Focus Support here. Wrath is the single largest damage aura for a lightning spell build — swap it on immediately and reserve the mana reservation pool (you are about to get Sanctuary of Thought, so do not panic about the mana hit). Do Lab 3 in Act 9 and take Sanctuary of Thought. Mana becomes your effective HP pool; start looking at mana rolls on gear instead of (or alongside) life.
How leveling works
Shock Nova of Procession is a transfigured Shock Nova that replaces the base ring-of-shocks pattern with a forward cone of five concentric nova rings. The cone overlap is the whole point — enemies caught near the center of the cone eat multiple rings in a single cast, which turns what looks like a modest lightning damage spell into a genuine boss-killer once you scale spell crit and shock effect. The Hierophant ascendancy is the natural home for the skill because Sanctuary of Thought and Divine Guidance turn the huge mana pool you are already building into energy shield and effective HP, while Arcane Blessing quietly multiplies every aura you run.
Unlike the totem variant of this ascendancy, the cast-yourself version of Shock Nova of Procession is live from the moment you can buy the gem — you do not respec into or out of anything mid-campaign. The catch is that the transfigured gem itself requires a transfiguration font reward from Normal Labyrinth, so you cannot socket Shock Nova of Procession the first time you see a Shock Nova vendor at around L28. The plan is: level with Freezing Pulse through Act 1–2, swap to Lightning Tendrils around Act 2 to get your tree pointed at lightning nodes, then swap to Shock Nova of Procession the moment Lab 1 is done and the font has produced the transfigured gem. Lilly Roth in Act 6 sells regular Shock Nova but not the transfigured form, so do not expect to buy your way past the Lab.
The Hierophant ascendancy order is Pursuit of Faith first (Lab 1, cheap charge-like totem buffs even for a self-cast build plus the Arcanist Brand synergy later), Conviction of Power second (Lab 2, for power charge generation that feeds your spell crit and endurance charges for flat ele reduction), Sanctuary of Thought third (Lab 3, the Mind over Matter-replacement that makes mana your effective HP pool), and Divine Guidance last (Uber Lab, the mana-to-ES conversion that finishes the defensive stack). This order gives you combat utility first and the full defensive pivot only once the build can afford to lean on it.
On aura setup: run Wrath as your damage aura (single biggest flat lightning damage boost in the game for a spell build), Herald of Thunder as your clear-speed layer, and Clarity at a low level to ease mana pressure until Sanctuary of Thought is online. Cast Assassin's Mark on rares once you can fit it — it both boosts spell crit chance against the marked target and generates power charges on kill, and Conviction of Power turns that charge generation into an endurance charge every fifth power charge.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon (wand or sceptre): flat added lightning damage to spells is the biggest single DPS roll during the campaign. spell crit chance, spell damage %, and cast speed round it out. The vendor recipe (magic wand + Topaz Ring + Blacksmith's Whetstone) guarantees an added lightning roll — spam it every 5–10 levels with a fresh magic wand.
- · Shield: life, mana, resists, and spell damage %. This is a Sanctuary of Thought build so mana roll on every piece is effective HP. Lifesprig is the classic leveling wand but it is not a shield — mention here only so you know to ignore it for this slot.
- · Body armour: rush a Tabula Rasa if you can find one cheap — the 6-link matters more than any stat roll during Act 4 onward. If not, a 4-link hybrid ES/armour chest with life, mana, and resists bridges the gap until a 5/6-link rare.
- · Helmet / gloves / boots: prioritise life, mana, and resists. Cap all three elemental 75% resist before entering maps. Goldrim is a cheap L1 helmet that solves all three resists through Act 4. Wanderlust gives movement speed + freeze immunity on boots and lasts until L30+.
- · Rings / amulet: life, mana, resists, spell crit multi on the amulet. A magic Topaz Ring with flat added lightning to spells is a huge damage boost for Shock Nova of Procession. Atziri's Foible is a great budget amulet (mana + int + all attribute regen) until you get a spell crit rare.
- · Flasks: life flask with bleed removal, mana flask (Sanctuary of Thought means mana loss hurts), quicksilver, granite + an iron skin roll for the physical layer, and a diamond flask once you can buy one — spell crit builds lean on diamond flask uptime for bosses.
Weapon progression
Through Act 1 use any wand or sceptre with added cold damage for Freezing Pulse. The magic wand + Sapphire Ring + Blacksmith's Whetstone vendor recipe gives a guaranteed cold damage roll and carries Freezing Pulse through the whole Act 1 phase.
From Act 2 onward you are scaling lightning damage, so switch the vendor recipe to magic wand + Topaz Ring + Blacksmith's Whetstone for a guaranteed flat lightning roll instead. Buy a new magic wand every 5–10 levels and re-run the recipe — the flat added lightning on a cheap wand will beat most rare weapons you find until around L40. Do not sink currency into a rare wand during the campaign; the endgame wants specific spell damage + spell crit + cast speed rolls that rare sticks should be rolled for in maps, not crafted for L30.
The endgame target is a rare wand or sceptre with: flat added lightning damage to spells, spell crit chance, spell damage %, and cast speed. "+1 to Level of All Lightning Spell Skill Gems" is the jackpot roll and is worth rerolling for once you are in yellow maps. Lifesprig is a strong leveling wand for the L1–L12 Freezing Pulse window — buy one for 1 alch if available, discard it the moment a vendor-crafted Topaz recipe wand beats it.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Shock Nova of Procession is a transfigured gem — it does NOT drop from Lilly Roth. You get it as a reward from the transfiguration font after completing Normal Labyrinth. If Lab 1 is still ahead of you at Act 4, run it before doing the Shock Nova swap. The regular Shock Nova you can buy from vendors does NOT have the forward-cone pattern — it is a round ring, and the build is dramatically weaker with it.
- ! Sanctuary of Thought replaces Mind over Matter — do NOT take Mind over Matter on the tree. The ascendancy node is strictly better for a Hierophant because it scales off your mana pool automatically and does not have the 30% mana-per-hit cost. Taking both wastes the tree points.
- ! Greater Volley is a 3.28 Mirage Exceptional Support and replaces GMP (which no longer exists in the same form). It is a tradable gem, not a quest reward — budget around 1 divine for a leveled copy during league start week one, dropping to a few chaos by week two. Until you buy it, run regular GMP or Spell Echo Support as the fifth link.
- ! Do not take Eldritch Battery on this build. Sanctuary of Thought and Divine Guidance already route your mana into both effective HP and energy shield; Eldritch Battery on top of them double-converts the same pool and breaks the math. This is a common misread because the keystone sounds thematically close.
- ! Wrath reserves a chunk of mana reservation that directly competes with your effective HP pool under Sanctuary of Thought. Do not turn Wrath on until you have Sanctuary of Thought allocated AND a mana pool of at least ~400 — turning it on too early will leave you with L28-zone mana regen trying to sustain a spam skill. The Act 6 timing in this guide is deliberate.
- ! The cone of Shock Nova of Procession fires in the direction you face, not where you click — you must rotate your character to aim. This is a surprisingly common cause of "the skill feels weak" complaints from players coming off Freezing Pulse or Arc. Practice the aim during Act 4–5 so you have the muscle memory by maps.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Swap to an Anathema Moonstone Ring to make curse limit = power charges — lets Elemental Weakness + Conductivity + Assassin's Mark stack via curse-on-hit
- Roll a Militant Faith timeless jewel in the Templar cluster for the Devotion stack — 4% increased elemental damage per 10 Devotion scales hard once the tree lights up
- Replace Valako's Sign with Foulborn Kikazaru once curses are online — 60% reduced effect of curses on you is a massive anti-boss defence and frees the slot for lightning damage scaling
- Pick up a Watcher's Eye with Wrath lightning penetration or spell crit while Wrath — pivots the build from Elemental Overload to real spell crit

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Shock Nova of Procession Hierophant at this tier is already fully committed to the build's defining engine: an Archmage-scaled lightning damage spell that fires five nova rings in a forward cone, converting a giant mana pool into per-hit damage. Archmage uptime is ~98% of the tier because the entire build is a mana-as-damage machine — Mindspiral grants 14% of Maximum Mana as Extra Energy Shield and forbids leech so recoup/regen carries sustain, Healthy Mind transforms life-in-radius into 200% mana, and Lavianga's Spirit flask gives skill-cost-free windows to burst. The body-armour 6-link runs Shock Nova of Procession + Archmage Support + Arcane Surge Support + Spell Echo Support + Lightning Penetration Support + Invert the Rules Support — a clean Archmage-crit staple.
Mind over Matter is on 87% of builds in tier and Elemental Overload on 78% — the pairing is the core identity: MoM routes 30% of damage into the fat mana pool, Elemental Overload gives 40% more lightning damage on any spell crit without needing stacked crit multiplier. Ascendancy runs Sanctuary of Thought, Divine Guidance, Arcane Blessing, and Conviction of Power — Conviction converts endurance into power charges and +1 min power charge, and Sanctuary of Thought removes mana reservation penalties so auras cost a fraction. Tree grabs Prodigal Perfection, Dreamer, Mental Rapidity, Crackling Speed, and Deep Thoughts as the mana-and-lightning ladder. Valako's Sign ring adds 40% increased damage against shocked enemies and self-shock chance, locking the ailment on every pack. Reference sheet reads 2.4M DPS at L83, which is well above the 997k median for tier — typical for a build that front-loads its identity.
Defence is pure Mind-over-Matter stacking. ~3.7k life + ~3.9k ES + a huge mana pool that absorbs 30% of incoming damage via Mind over Matter produces ~38k EHP. Mindspiral's 13% damage-taken recouped as mana refunds the MoM tax back into the shield layer. All elemental resistances sit capped at 75-76% with 75% chaos via Screams of the Desiccated equivalents or rare rolls. 4 endurance charges are on demand via Conviction of Power, which Hierophant auto-generates through power charges on the Conviction-of-Power loop. Spell crit is still low (19.8%) and 0% spell suppress — this tier lives off MoM, not suppress. A Granite Flask with Immunity to Shock covers the one ailment the build self-inflicts on reflect packs.
Stand-in-one-spot nova fountain. Shock Nova of Procession's five forward rings mean each cast plants a dense cone of overlapping waves — packs in corridors and Delirium lanes melt because 4-5 rings hit every target. Spell Echo Support doubles casts for free, Frostblink of Wintry Blast handles gap-closing, and the Lavianga's Spirit flask window gives 4 seconds of cost-free casting for elite packs. Single-target isn't the strong suit at this tier — rings spread outward, so point-blank bosses eat only the inner 1-2 rings — but Lightning Penetration Support and permanent shock keep things dying. Mana is the only resource; as long as the mana pool is visible, damage flows.

Endgame L85–94
- The endgame pivot is twofold: the curse engine comes online and the damage shifts from MoM-funded nova-spam to a Kitava's Thirst-driven curse trigger stack. Anathema makes curse limit = power charges, Foulborn Kikazaru shuts off self-curse effect, and the helmet triggers Elemental Weakness/Conductivity/Enfeeble/Punishment every time a skill spends 100+ mana. Cloak of Defiance replaces a rare chest to give Mind over Matter for free plus +2 AoE gems, freeing a keystone point.
- Add a Watcher's Eye with Wrath spell crit + Wrath lightning penetration — the aspirational pivot from Elemental Overload to real spell crit starts here
- Slot Wrath on Eternal Blessing Support in the weapon once Sanctuary of Thought reservation math allows — ~80% more lightning damage is the single biggest upgrade available
- Craft a rare Profane Wand with 69%+ increased Spell Crit Chance + Adds Lightning Damage to Spells + +2 Lightning Gems for the real damage wand
- Buy a Forbidden Flame/Forbidden Flesh pair for Disciple of the Forbidden or a second ascendancy notable — typical Hierophant endgame power spike

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Shock Nova of Procession now runs in the chest as Archmage Support + Controlled Destruction Support + Inspiration Support + Intensify Support + Greater Spell Echo Support — Controlled Destruction Support replaces the hit-scaling support because the build now leans on Elemental Overload-style proc crit, not real spell crit (0.94% crit chance, 5.73 crit multi). Intensify Support stacks focus stages for +40% nova damage on sustained casting, and Inspiration Support cuts mana cost while adding elemental multiplier.
The curse stack is the real DPS multiplier: Kitava's Thirst at +2 to socketed curse gems auto-casts Elemental Weakness + Conductivity + Enfeeble + Punishment simultaneously on every 100-mana nova cast. Anathema carries 17% chance to gain a power charge on curse cast, and Conviction of Power converts that back into endurance + power charges. Tree grabs Arcane Guarding, Safeguard, Mystic Bulwark, and Sanctuary — a block-heavy shift made possible by a rare shield with 69% increased block chance + Scorch Enemies when you Block. Militant Faith Devotion scaling (4% ele damage per 10 Devotion) and The Light of Meaning radius jewel (6% increased lightning damage per passive) add ~25% raw damage each. Reference sits at 3.2M DPS / 62.9k EHP against a tier median 7.2M / 73k — the reference character is under-rolled on gear (no Watcher's Eye, no Wrath), but the skeleton is tier-standard.
Block becomes the headline layer: 62% attack block + 78% spell block from the rare shield plus Arcane Guarding, Safeguard, and Mystic Bulwark. Mind over Matter (via Cloak of Defiance) still routes 30% damage into mana, and the build pushes 1561 mana regen to keep the MoM pool topped between casts. Foulborn Kikazaru x2 or x1 plus Anathema gives 60% reduced effect of curses on you — hexproof-adjacent for map mods. Chaos res capped at 75, all elementals at 76%. The compromise is the life pool — only 2.4k life + 2.5k ES, with EHP carried almost entirely by the mana shell and block. Purity of Elements (run via Eternal Blessing Support for zero reservation) closes the ailment-immunity gap that the low life pool would otherwise expose.
Cast-heavy but far faster: 17.84 casts/s through Spell Echo Support (or Greater Spell Echo Support as the chest gem levels), each cast triggering the four-curse Kitava's Thirst bomb. Pack clear is explosive — a single nova + curse volley shreds screens because enemies take +50% lightning damage from Elemental Weakness + Conductivity stacking. Arcane Cloak on Automation Support auto-fires as a panic button, draining reserved mana into a guard shield. Frostblink of Wintry Blast remains the movement skill. Boss fights still suffer the nova-cone issue (rings spread past the target) but the curse-stack multiplier compensates — stand back, let rings overlap on the boss's hitbox.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational drops Kitava's Thirst and the curse-trigger spam, replacing it with a Wrath-fueled spell crit build. The body armour becomes a rare crit-ES chest (Twilight Regalia), Wrath runs on Eternal Blessing Support in the weapon, and the helmet hosts Assassin's Mark + Arcanist Brand for on-demand curse without the Kitava's Thirst cast-speed penalty. Triple Foulborn Kikazaru rings stack attributes + curse-immunity, and a Forbidden Flame/Forbidden Flesh pair lands Conviction of Power off-ascendancy, freeing a point for Disciple of the Forbidden.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
At full power: ~14M DPS, 94k EHP, 52.65% crit chance, 5.22 crit multiplier, 75% attack block + 73% spell block. Shock Nova of Procession now links Archmage Support + Increased Critical Damage Support + Arcane Surge Support + Greater Spell Echo Support + Intensify Support — the support bundle moves from flat scaling to pure crit-damage scaling because Wrath + Watcher's Eye + tree crit pushes the base crit past 50%. The Watcher's Eye here carries 87% increased spell crit while affected by Wrath + 13% lightning penetration while affected by Wrath, the single biggest damage multiplier in the build.
Foulborn Kalisa's Grace gloves embed Level 18 Faster Casting support for free, saving a chest slot. Atziri's Foible amulet gives +119 max mana + 28% increased max mana + 99% increased mana regen — the mana-as-damage identity hits its natural ceiling. Militant Faith in the Templar cluster converts passives to Devotion nodes; the tree now runs Righteous Decree, Devotion, Arcane Will, and Disciple of the Forbidden. A Replica Reckless Defence cobalt adds +6% spell block + +6% attack block at the cost of +10% to be shocked/frozen/ignited — Purity of Elements neutralises the downside. The Eternal Youth keystone is transformed to Inner Conviction via Militant Faith, gating even more mana-based damage. Assassin's Mark on Arcanist Brand puts targeted power charges generation on bosses.
EHP 94k on a 2.1k life / 7.2k ES frame is the Hierophant block-and-mana-shell identity at its peak. 75% attack block + 73% spell block from the rare spirit shield (73% increased block, 13% spell block) + Arcane Guarding + Mystic Bulwark + Sanctuary produces a character that simply doesn't get hit by most damage. Mind over Matter (still via Cloak of Defiance variant or tree) routes 30% through the huge mana pool, and +2 max power charges from Mindspiral's corrupt version plus 5 power charges active deepens the shell. Chaos res 56% is the one soft spot — a 75% version would cost a ring slot the build can't spare. Arcane Cloak on Automation Support remains the reactive guard; Purity of Elements on Eternal Blessing Support gives full ailment immunity so the Replica Reckless Defence downside disappears. 4 endurance charges + 18% phys DR cover physical hits.
The apex Hierophant mana-caster fantasy: stand anywhere, cast once, delete the screen. 14.44 casts/s with Greater Spell Echo Support spawns cascading nova waves in a forward cone — packs die before reaching flask range. Wrath layered with Watcher's Eye penetration pushes effective damage against shocked/cursed mobs well past the sheet number because 13% lightning pen + Elemental Weakness + Assassin's Mark + shock magnitude stacks multiplicatively on the displayed DPS. Pinnacle bosses — Maven, Feared, Uber Exarch — take sustained nova cones to chunk down, but the 75/73 block + mana-shell + ailment-immunity stack lets the character stand still and tank telegraphs that kill crit archetypes. Frostblink of Wintry Blast + movement speed boots keep traversal clean. The only real failure mode is sustain on big chaos hits (56% chaos res) and the occasional off-screen phys one-shot — everything else is already solved.
