Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Freezing PulseShadow can buy Freezing Pulse from Nessa after Hillock (meets the int requirement). Arcane Surge Support from the Mercy Mission quest — keep it low-level. Flame Dash from Nessa after Submerged Passage. Drop Clarity on as soon as the int requirement is met. Any wand or sceptre with added cold damage is fine; vendor-craft with Sapphire Ring + magic wand + Whetstone.
- Act 2: run Orb of StormsPick up Herald of Thunder from Yeena after the Great White Beast and add Orb of Storms alongside Freezing Pulse. Orb of Storms applies shock to rares, a flat damage multiplier for everything you cast on top. Bandit reward: help Alira for mana regen, crit multi, and resists — Assassin scales directly on crit multi so Alira is particularly valuable here. Start pathing toward Nullification and the big spell crit cluster on the tree.
- Act 3 — L28 swap: run SparkRun Normal Lab at the end of Act 3 and take Noxious Strike — the poison stack on every hit starts the chaos-damage layer that separates Assassin from Inquisitor. The transfiguration font gives you Spark of the Nova; swap it in immediately. Pick up Assassin's Mark from Yeena for power charge generation on bosses (Shadow's namesake curse — fitting). Wire up a Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin setup — the build is already fragile and Petrified Blood will make it worse.
- Act 4–5: run Spark of the NovaSpell Echo Support live as soon as the int requirement is met — doubles cast rate, and the nova burst overlaps tighter with echo. Lab 2 in Act 5: take Assassinate — crits ramp hard against low-life targets, and combined with Spark of the Nova's rapid-hit density you shock + crit-chunk every pack. Storm Prison is a ~5-chaos unique iron ring with flat lightning and a free power charge; slot it the moment you find one. DO NOT equip Petrified Blood yet — low life is a liability without the full defensive stack.
- Act 6 — Wrath: run Spark of the NovaWrath from the Act 6 quest reward is the single biggest leveling damage spike — reserve it the moment you arrive at Lioneye's Watch and DPS roughly doubles. Add Inspiration Support — mana-cost reduction keeps casting sustainable under Spell Echo Support, and the crit multi is a straight damage add that Assassin scales directly. Lilly Roth vendors every regular support gem, so catch up on any link you missed. Still no Petrified Blood — wait for Act 8+.
- Act 7–9 — Petrified Blood online: run Spark of the NovaReserve Petrified Blood (Act 7 quest reward) the moment your life total is at least 3500 and you have a life regen roll on at least one piece of gear — the low-life state is what activates Assassinate's full crit bonus against every target. Lab 3 in Act 9: take Opportunistic — 20% more damage vs full-life enemies stacks with Ambush for the first-hit burst on a pack. Start pathing tree notables toward Arcane Potency, Nullification, Heart of Thunder, and Doom Cast.
How leveling works
Spark of the Nova on an Assassin is an unusual take — most Spark casters go Inquisitor for Inevitable Judgement (crits ignore elemental resistance), but Assassin pivots the identity to pure crit multiplier scaling with a low-life twist via Petrified Blood. The ascendancy is built around two keystone-level nodes: Ambush grants crit chance while on full life, and Assassinate grants crit on low-life targets. The build runs Petrified Blood to sit permanently at "low life" (below 50% of max), which means Assassinate crits land against every enemy you hit — and the build leans into poison via Noxious Strike to add a chaos-damage layer on top of the lightning crit hits.
The identity vs. Inquisitor is distinct: Inquisitor scales generic elemental spell crit multiplier with resistance ignoring; Assassin scales pure crit multi with poison DoT and low-life mechanics. Assassin ends up with HIGHER ceiling DPS than Inquisitor once the poison layer is fully online, at the cost of a more fragile low-life setup and tighter gear requirements. If you want the smoother pilot experience, roll Inquisitor; if you want the glass-cannon crit-poison hybrid, this is the right variant.
The ascendancy order is: Noxious Strike (Lab 1 — adds a poison stack + withering hit to every attack/spell, a chaos-damage multiplier on top of your lightning hits), Assassinate (Lab 2 — crit chance + crit multi vs low-life enemies, which under Petrified Blood means every target hits the low-life threshold for the damage bonus), Opportunistic (Lab 3 — 20% more damage vs full-life enemies, stacks cleanly with Ambush on first-hit burst), Ambush (Uber Lab — crit chance + crit multi vs full-life targets, which means your first-hit burst on a pack crits harder than any follow-up).
Leveling path: Freezing Pulse through Acts 1–2 because it scales on any int-stick and the chill/freeze layer keeps a crit-build safe. Swap to Orb of Storms + regular Spark around Act 2–3 to get familiar with the projectile-bounce playstyle and start shock-stacking. The Lab 1 L28 transfiguration font gives you Spark of the Nova. Petrified Blood comes online as a dedicated buff around Act 6–7 — you don't run it during the acts because the low-life mechanic is a liability in campaign content without the full defensive stack.
Do not sink currency into leveling uniques beyond Goldrim, Wanderlust, and Lifesprig. The endgame wants Storm Prison for power charges and a crafted crit wand — every chaos you spend on transition luxuries comes out of the wand budget. Tabula Rasa is fine if cheap but do not farm for one.
Gear while leveling
- · Wand (main hand): through Acts 1–5 any magic wand with added cold or lightning damage via the vendor recipe. Transition target at Act 6 is a rare wand with "+1 to Level of All Lightning Spell Skill Gems" (~5c in most leagues). Endgame target: rare wand with spell crit chance, flat lightning spell damage, "+1 to All Lightning Spell Gems", and crit multi — red-maps purchase.
- · Shield (off hand): rare int shield with life, mana, resists, and ideally spell crit chance. No Storm Prison in off-hand — the unique is a ring, not a shield.
- · Body armour: a 4-link hybrid ES/evasion or pure ES chest with life, mana, and resists bridges to maps. Tabula Rasa is fine if cheap. The endgame target is a crafted rare ES chest with a 6-link, ideally with a "X% of damage taken before life is reserved" craft for the Petrified Blood rotation.
- · Helmet / gloves / boots: prioritise life, mana, and resists. Mana on every piece matters here because Wrath + Herald of Thunder + Clarity + Petrified Blood eats your pool fast. Cap all three resists at 75% resist before maps.
- · Rings: Storm Prison is the leveling unique — ~5 chaos, a free power charge, and +1 to minimum power charges. The other slot is a rare with life, mana, resists, and added lightning damage to spells. Assassin benefits from any chaos damage over time multi roll on rings — feeds the Noxious Strike poison layer.
- · Amulet: Atziri's Foible is a great budget pick until a crafted rare with crit multi, life, mana, and resists outperforms. Anoint Divine Judgement or Doom Cast once you can afford the oils.
- · Boots: Wanderlust for move speed + freeze immunity through Acts 1–5. Swap to rare boots with life, 30% movement, and three resists by Act 6. Atziri's Step is a cheap life + spell-dodge boot that pairs cleanly with Assassin's low-life fragility.
- · Belt: rare Leather / Stygian Vise with life and resists. Stygian Vise + abyss jewel rolling "chaos damage over time multi" and "flat added chaos to spells" feeds the poison layer directly.
- · Flasks: life flask with bleed removal (NOT "Instant Recovery" — Petrified Blood rotation wants ramping regen), mana flask (reservation is tight), quicksilver, diamond flask the moment you can afford one (crit roll is a direct damage multiplier for Assassin), and a "Hallowed of the Sage" flask for Warding against hex/curse stacks that can wreck a low-life caster.
- · Jewel sockets: prioritise life, crit multi, and chaos damage over time multi on rare jewels. Watcher's Eye with "chance to deal double damage while affected by Wrath" or "critical strike multiplier while affected by Clarity" is the aspirational red-maps jewel.
Weapon progression
Through Acts 1–2 use any magic wand with added cold or lightning damage. Vendor recipe (Sapphire or Topaz Ring + magic wand + Blacksmith's Whetstone) gives a guaranteed element-flat roll and carries Freezing Pulse / Spark cleanly. Re-run the recipe on a new base every 4–6 levels — do not sink currency into a rare wand, the bases you want at L28 and again at maps are completely different.
The L28 swap stays on wand + shield. Around Act 6 look for a wand with "+1 to Level of All Lightning Spell Skill Gems" as a transition upgrade (~5c in most leagues); otherwise keep vendor-crafting for added flat lightning. Lifesprig is a cheap +1 all spell gems + life regen wand that works as an Acts 1–4 leveling stick but gets replaced the moment Spark of the Nova comes online — it doesn't have enough raw damage for the L28 power spike.
The endgame target is a rare wand with spell crit chance, flat added lightning spell damage, "+1 to Level of All Lightning Spell Skill Gems", and "+X% to Critical Strike Multiplier" — a red-maps-and-beyond craft/purchase, not a campaign one. Any 4-link wand with Spell Echo Support + Lightning Penetration Support + Controlled Destruction Support clears yellow maps fine once you have Wrath + Assassinate + Petrified Blood online.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Spark of the Nova is a transfigured gem — it does NOT drop from Lilly Roth. You get it ONLY as a reward from the transfiguration font after completing Normal Labyrinth. If you die in Lab you lose the font pick for that run, so overlevel Lab by 2–3 before attempting. If you skip the font, you cannot buy the transfigured version — you're stuck with regular Spark until the next league.
- ! Noxious Strike must be your FIRST ascendancy pick, not Ambush or Assassinate first. The poison stack per hit is the chaos-damage layer that separates Assassin from Inquisitor — skipping it at Lab 1 means 10+ levels of flat-garbage DPS until Lab 2. If you've already taken the wrong node, 5 Orbs of Regret get you back on track.
- ! DO NOT equip Petrified Blood before Act 7–8. Low life is a severe liability during campaign content without the full stack of life regen rolls, CwDT panic defense, and ideally Kikazaru or another regen ring. Assassin's natural fragility plus low life plus no Uber Lab Ambush yet is a death sentence in Acts 4–6. Wait until you're at Act 7, have 3500+ life, and have at least one regen gear roll.
- ! Wrath + Herald of Thunder + Clarity + Petrified Blood together will over-reserve your mana pool unless you pick up at least one mana reservation efficiency notable on the tree before Act 8. Drop Clarity temporarily if you need to, NOT Wrath — Wrath is the single biggest DPS multiplier in the build. Petrified Blood is also non-negotiable once online because it's what activates Assassinate.
- ! Spark of the Nova wants you standing still for the nova burst to overlap, but Assassin's defensive stack is worse than Inquisitor's Pious Path. A Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin setup from L10 onward is MANDATORY, and you should prioritise evasion/ES gear over pure armour pieces — Assassin scales with dodge/evade, not armour.
- ! Mind over Matter is a trap on this build — it competes for damage taken with Petrified Blood, and the two don't stack cleanly. If you want a second defensive layer beyond Petrified Blood, go Eldritch Battery + energy shield gear instead, not MoM. The hybrid build (MoM + PB) is a known pilot trap that feels OK at L70 and falls apart at L85.
- ! Greater Volley Support is a 3.28 Mirage Exceptional Support that replaced Greater Multiple Projectiles (which no longer exists). It is tradable, not a quest reward — budget around 1 divine for a leveled copy during league start week one, dropping to a few chaos by week two. Until you buy it, the 4-link and 6-link work fine without it, just with tighter overlap.
Endgame L85–94
- No early-mapping reference exists for this ascendancy in the ladder snapshot — the tier has a buildCount of 15 and the median DPS is 99k, well below what Spark of the Nova Assassin needs to be functional. The practical read: skip the Assassin ascendancy until endgame. Level as Spark on a generic low-life Shadow base with Tabula Rasa + Foulborn Ghostwrithe, unlock all four ascendancy points before committing to the Assassin notables, then swap into this template at L85+.
- Pick up Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocating Born in the Shadows — 46% of endgame ladder has this pair, it's a clean defensive ascendancy borrow that stacks with Mistwalker's Elusive generation
- Craft or trade a rare Kalandra's Touch companion ring with more life + resistance + flat crit multi — the mirror doubles every rare line
- Swap Sacrifice Support for Greater Spell Echo Support if the life sacrifice feels too swingy (39% of endgame builds run GSE instead, trading damage-per-cast for steadier uptime)

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The L92 endgame reference runs the classic low-life Spark shell: The Apostate body armour (+2 to level of socketed projectile gems, gain max life instead of max ES from equipped armour items), Rathpith Globe off-hand (sacrifice 10% life per spell cast, 5% spell crit and 5% spell damage per 100 player max life), Pain Attunement for +30% more spell damage at low life, and Blood Magic to run the mana-hungry skill stack off life. The weapon is a rare Profane Wand carrying spell damage and cast speed. The 6-link runs Spark of the Nova + Arcane Surge Support + Fork Support + Greater Unleash Support + Sacrifice Support + Spell Echo Support + Critical Strike Affliction Support — the exceptional Sacrifice Support is the notable pick, trading life on cast for raw spell damage, which stacks with Rathpith Globe's existing sacrifice loop.
Ascendancy is Opportunistic + Mistwalker + Assassination Style. Opportunistic is the star — its more-damage-dealt and less-damage-taken lines against rare enemies in presence form a boss-specific multiplier that stacks with the nova projectile overlap. Mistwalker hands out ailment immunity and triggers Elusive (~40% attack/spell dodge + ~30% move speed) on crit kills, effectively a frenzy-charge replacement. Assassination Style is the big crit-multi chunk (+30% crit multi). Ambush is skipped entirely on the reference, confirming the ladder consensus that the full-life-crit line is dead weight for this caster build.
Foulborn The Red Dream Crimson jewel converts 7% of fire damage as extra chaos and grants increased max life at 50% of fire-res-granting passives' values — the reference stacks this with Watcher's Eye + a Brood Shine / Vivid Hope cluster jewel economy. Marylene's Fallacy amulet trades 48% less crit chance for +286% crit multi and crit-culling — a classic caster crit swap that works because the build already overcaps crit chance through rare wand, Assassination, Critical Strike Affliction Support, and the Surgeon's flask crit bonus. Kalandra's Touch mirrors the Woe Turn Cogwork Ring (+1 suffix, +31% crit multi, +16% all-res, +15% cast speed) for doubled value. Headhunter on the belt runs for map clear; Bottled Faith adds the consecrated ground + crit chance window; Dissolution of the Flesh crimson jewel lets life-lost-to-damage be reserved and returned after 2s of no-damage — a low-life-friendly damage absorb. The main-hand Zealotry runs via Eternal Blessing Support for free aura reservation.
15.3k life, EHP 45k, 25% attack block + 14% spell block from Rathpith Globe, no spell suppression (the build doesn't pursue it), resistances overcapped cleanly through rare gear rolls. Chaos resist +12% is the weak pillar, patched partially by The Apostate's +29% all elemental resistance and the Oblivion Grip gloves' chaos res. The Dissolution of the Flesh jewel's 29% more max life and damage-reservation line is the single biggest ES-free defensive scaling source. Kalandra's Touch mirroring the Woe Turn ring means every stat on that ring hits twice. Pantheon is Arakaali + Ralakesh for bleed/corrupted blood immunity and damage-over-time mitigation. Immortal Call via Automation catches physical spikes; Steelskin on CWDT absorbs the smaller ones.
The nova ring and low-life loop feel the same as Inquisitor — Shield Charge in (the reference uses Frostblink of Wintry Blast instead), stand on the pack, hold left-click, nova projectiles overlap. What's different is the charge-charged nature of the damage: with Greater Unleash Support the build builds 3-4 unleash stacks while moving, then dumps them all in a single cast for a massive overlapping barrage, and Sacrifice Support makes the cast-to-cast damage lumpy rather than steady. Mistwalker's Elusive on crit-kill means pack-clear self-fuels — every rare kill triggers an Elusive window that carries you into the next pack. Boss rotations lean into Opportunistic's in-presence damage multiplier: stand next to the boss, eat the in-presence bonus, fire nova salvos. Headhunter's rare-buff steals carry the clear speed past what a conventional caster would hit.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational flips the build on its head. Pain Attunement and the low-life Apostate shell are abandoned — the reference commits to Chaos Inoculation, ties ES to mana via Whispers of Infinity (routes skill costs to ES) plus Shavronne's Revelation, and pivots to Perfect Agony crit-DoT through Perfect Agony + Ghost Dance. Weapons shift to Bino's Kitchen Knife + Essentia Sanguis claw pair — which is identifiably the Viper Strike of the Mamba Assassin weapon setup, confirming this aspirational tier has heavy crossover with the poison-assassin archetype. This is genuinely unusual for a Spark guide: the L97 reference is effectively running a hybrid crit-poison-Spark with Perfect Agony scaling crit damage into chaos DoT rather than the clean lightning-nova identity the skill suggests.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Perfect Agony is the keystone pivot — crit multiplier now scales ailment damage (poison, ignite) at 30% effectiveness, which turns the Assassin's native crit-multi stack into a DoT multiplier. Bino's Kitchen Knife is the poison proliferator, Essentia Sanguis handles ES leech with Ghost Reaver built in, and the Viper Strike setup co-exists with Spark of the Nova — the reference actually runs both, with a 6-link Viper Strike of the Mamba in the chest (Damage on Full Life Support + Melee Physical Damage Support + Swift Affliction Support + Nightblade Support + Greater Ancestral Call Support) and Spark-family scaling through Voices cluster jewels. Sheet DPS reads 1.6M but that's only the Viper Strike line — the real output is the stacked poison DoT plus whatever Spark of the Nova builds up on rotation.
The defensive-offensive stack leans on Whispers of Infinity's skills-cost-ES-instead-of-mana implicit plus Shavronne's Revelation's per-slot ES regen mode. Foulborn Le Heup of All adds +21 all attributes and +23% all-res. Four Voices large cluster jewels open up the tree's jewel socket economy, with Medium clusters carrying Eldritch Inspiration and Low Tolerance for flask and res scaling. Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocate Born in the Shadows, a huge defensive ascendancy borrow giving less damage taken while Elusive. Brutal Restraint timeless jewel conquers a Maraketh radius for extra damage and attribute density. Purity of Elements + Discipline + Clarity + Flesh and Stone stack as auras under Eternal Blessing Support + Enlighten Support.
Chaos Inoculation brings life to 1 and pushes 6.9k ES as the entire pool. EHP 43k, 99% spell suppression with 43% effect (the max-roll suppress pillar, fully capping its mitigation), 20% block from off-hand, 4% physical damage reduction, and -15% chaos resist which under CI doesn't matter because chaos bypasses ES anyway — wait, it does matter for unique chaos mechanics (chaos DoT, uncounterable chaos hits), but the build's sparse armour and evasion stack plus Ghost Dance's Phase-regen mode plus Elusive uptime make chaos one-shots rare. Ghost Dance grants Phasing and Ghost Shrouds that absorb hits before ES is touched. Mistwalker still provides ailment immunity — at CI that's moot for chill/freeze but matters for poison, ignite, and corrupted blood.
Hybrid crit-poison + spell caster. The practical rotation is melee the boss with Viper Strike of the Mamba to stack poison (Opportunistic's in-presence multiplier stacks on the melee hits), while Spark of the Nova auto-fires through Automation and the in-chest setup for supplementary damage. Whirling Blades in the boots handles instant repositioning. General's Cry in the gloves summons Mirage Warriors that trigger Cyclone of Tumult for Fortify generation — a Pathfinder-Assassin hybrid trick. Movement is Flame Dash via Automation. This is a harder build to pilot than Inquisitor or Hierophant — you're running two main skills simultaneously, managing Mistwalker's Elusive uptime, and threading poison stacks while the Spark nova fires. Expect a steeper learning curve than the non-Assassin Spark variants.
