Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Freezing PulseBuy Freezing Pulse from Nessa after Hillock. Arcane Surge Support from the Mercy Mission quest — keep it low-level so it procs on 1–2 casts. Flame Dash from Nessa after Submerged Passage. Drop Clarity on as soon as the int requirement is met so mana reservation stays manageable. Any wand or sceptre with added cold damage is fine; vendor-craft with Sapphire Ring + magic wand + whetstone.
- Act 2: run Orb of StormsPick up Herald of Thunder from Yeena after the Great White Beast and add Orb of Storms alongside Freezing Pulse — Orb of Storms applies shock to rares and bosses which is a flat damage multiplier for everything you cast on top. Bandit reward: help Alira for mana regen, crit multi, and resists — this build wants all three. Start pathing toward Arcane Potency and the big spell crit cluster on the tree.
- Act 3 — L28 swap: run SparkRun Normal Lab at the end of Act 3 and take Righteous Providence — the spell crit multiplier is the single biggest ascendancy power spike in the leveling process. The transfiguration font gives you Spark of the Nova as a reward; swap it in immediately. Pick up Assassin's Mark from Yeena for power charge generation on bosses. Add a CwDT + Steelskin setup — the build is fragile without it because Spark of the Nova wants you standing still in the overlap zone.
- Act 4–5: run Spark of the NovaSpell Echo Support is live as soon as the int requirement is met — it doubles cast rate and the nova burst is already built for overlap, so double casts stack into a wall of projectiles. Do Lab 2 in Act 5 and take Inevitable Judgement — from this point on your crits fully ignore elemental resistance, and the damage goes up by roughly the full resist value of whatever you're killing. Storm Prison is a ~5-chaos unique iron ring that adds a lightning implicit and free power charges; slot it in if you find one.
- Act 6 — Wrath: run Spark of the NovaWrath from the Act 6 quest reward is the single biggest leveling damage spike in this build — reserve it the moment you arrive at Lioneye's Watch and your DPS roughly doubles. Keep Herald of Thunder on alongside it; the two stack cleanly with Clarity under mana reservation as long as you've picked up at least one reservation efficiency notable. Add Inspiration Support — the mana cost reduction keeps your casting sustainable under Spell Echo Support, and the crit multi is a straight damage add. Lilly Roth vendors every regular support gem, so catch up on any link you missed.
- Act 7–9: run Spark of the NovaDo Lab 3 in Act 9 and take Instruments of Zeal — the consecrated-ground damage bonus and flat crit while standing on it pairs cleanly with the nova burst because you're already stationary while casting. Start picking up tree notables: Arcane Potency, Nullification, Heart of Thunder, and Doom Cast are all on the path you want. If you can spare a jewel socket, Elemental Equilibrium via a cold damage ring or boot (hit with Flame Dash) shreds lightning resist on top of Inevitable Judgement.
How leveling works
Spark of the Nova is a transfigured Spark that abandons the forward cone in favour of a nova burst — projectiles spiral outward from the caster in every direction, then bounce off walls and pile into dense overlap zones. On an ascendancy built around Righteous Providence (elemental spell crit) and Inevitable Judgement (crits ignore elemental resistance), that overlap becomes a lightning damage meat grinder — every bounce can crit, every crit fully penetrates, and screens clear in one cast. The ascendancy is the single strongest crit caster in the game and this is its signature skill.
Leveling with Spark of the Nova directly is NOT the plan — the transfigured gem is gated on Normal Labyrinth completion and a transfiguration font reward, which puts it out of reach until ~L28. The clean path is to level as a Freezing Pulse mana caster through Acts 1–2 (Nessa sells it, it scales on any int-stick, and it kills faster than Spark at low levels because cold adds shatter), then swap to Orb of Storms + regular Spark around Act 2–3 to start shock-stacking and get familiar with the projectile-bounce playstyle. The ascendancy points you want are Righteous Providence (Lab 1, the spell crit multiplier that defines the build), Inevitable Judgement (Lab 2, the resist-ignore on crits that makes lightning damage uncapped), Instruments of Zeal (Lab 3, consecrated-ground damage + crit while on it), and Pious Path (Uber Lab, persistent consecrated ground + regen). Take them in that exact order — skipping Righteous Providence first means your crit is flat garbage for the whole campaign.
The real transition happens at L28. Run Normal Lab the moment you can (overlevel it by 2–3 if needed — dying in Lab costs you the transfiguration font), pick Spark of the Nova from the font, and socket it with Spell Echo Support + Controlled Destruction Support + Lightning Penetration Support in whatever 4-link you have. The damage jumps hard the moment the gem enters a wand — bounces and overlap multiply any support you plug in. From there you are playing the endgame build, just at lower gem levels.
Auras are the other defining piece. Clarity goes on at Act 1 the moment Nessa sells it to keep mana reservation tight for the early casts. Herald of Thunder enters in Act 2–3 (Yeena) and immediately stacks with Spark of the Nova's lightning damage. Wrath comes online in Act 6 from the quest reward and is the single biggest DPS multiplier in the entire leveling process — the day you hit Lioneye's Watch you reserve mana for Wrath and your damage doubles. Assassin's Mark from Yeena in Act 3 gives power charge generation against rares and bosses, which feeds Righteous Providence's crit multiplier; it is the cheapest scaling you have until maps.
Do not sink currency into leveling uniques. Goldrim, Lifesprig, and Wanderlust are the handful worth a few alts each. A Tabula Rasa at Lab 1 is fantastic if it falls in your lap but do not spend real currency on one — the endgame wants a crafted rare ES chest, and anything you spend on transition luxuries comes out of the Storm Prison / high-crit wand budget.
Gear while leveling
- · Wand (main hand): through Acts 1–5 any magic wand with added cold or lightning damage works — vendor-craft with Sapphire/Topaz Ring + Whetstone. The endgame target is a rare wand with spell crit chance, flat lightning spell damage, and "+X to Level of All Spell Skill Gems" — but that is a red-maps purchase, not a campaign one.
- · Shield (off hand): any int shield with +life/+mana/+resists and ideally spell crit or spell damage on a rare roll. Do not bother with a Storm Prison in the off-hand — the unique ring is the target, not a shield.
- · Body armour: a 4-link hybrid ES/evasion or pure ES chest with life, mana, and resists bridges to maps cleanly. Tabula Rasa is great if cheap but not worth farming — the build ends up on a crafted rare ES chest with 6-link in the endgame.
- · Helmet / gloves / boots: prioritise life, mana, and resists. Mana on every piece matters here because Wrath + Herald of Thunder + Clarity eats your pool and Spell Echo Support drains it fast. Cap all three elemental resists at 75% resist before entering maps.
- · Rings: Storm Prison is the leveling unique — ~5 chaos, a free power charge, and +1 to all minimum power charges. For the other ring slot, a rare with life, mana, resists, and ideally added lightning damage to spells.
- · Amulet: Atziri's Foible is a great budget pick until you have a crafted rare with spell crit multi, life, mana, and resists. Anoint Divine Judgement or Doom Cast once you can afford the oils.
- · Boots: Wanderlust for the movement speed and freeze immunity — cheapest "just works" boot in the game and lasts you through Act 6 comfortably.
- · Helmet: Goldrim covers all elemental resists at once for the cost of an alt, and a 4-link Goldrim is genuinely viable through Act 5.
- · Flasks: life flask with bleed removal, mana flask (mana reservation is tight the whole campaign), quicksilver, and a diamond flask the moment you can afford one — the crit roll is a direct damage multiplier.
Weapon progression
Through Acts 1–2 use any magic wand with added cold or lightning damage. The magic wand + Sapphire Ring (cold) or Topaz Ring (lightning) + Blacksmith's Whetstone vendor recipe gives a guaranteed element-flat roll and carries you through the entire spell-caster phase. Re-run the recipe on a new base every 4–6 levels — do not sink currency into a rare wand, the bases you'll want at L28 and again at maps are completely different.
The L28 swap is still a wand + shield — Spark of the Nova is a spell, not an attack, so you stay on casters the whole way. Look for a wand with "+1 to Level of All Lightning Spell Skill Gems" as a transition upgrade (a ~5-chaos item in most leagues) and otherwise keep vendor-crafting for added flat lightning.
The endgame target is a rare wand with spell crit chance, flat added lightning spell damage, "+1 to Level of All Lightning Spell Skill Gems", and "+X% to Critical Strike Multiplier" — but this is a red-maps-and-beyond purchase/craft, not a campaign one. Any 4-link wand with Spell Echo Support + Lightning Penetration Support + Controlled Destruction Support clears yellow maps fine once you have Wrath + Inevitable Judgement online.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Spark of the Nova is a transfigured gem — it does NOT drop from Lilly Roth. You get it ONLY as a reward from the transfiguration font after completing Normal Labyrinth. If you die in Lab you lose the font pick for that run, so overlevel Lab by 2–3 before attempting it. If you somehow skip the font, you cannot buy the transfigured version — you're stuck with regular Spark until the next league.
- ! Righteous Providence must be your FIRST ascendancy pick. Taking Augury of Penitence or anything else first means your spell crit multiplier is flat garbage for the whole campaign and Spark of the Nova will feel like a wet noodle. If you've already taken the wrong node, 5 Orbs of Regret will get you back on track.
- ! Wrath + Herald of Thunder + Clarity together will over-reserve your mana pool if you don't pick up at least one mana reservation efficiency notable on the tree before Act 6. Drop Clarity temporarily if you need to, not Wrath — Wrath is the single biggest DPS multiplier in the build and non-negotiable.
- ! Spark of the Nova wants you standing still for the nova burst to overlap, but standing still is how you die. A CwDT + Steelskin setup from L10 onward is mandatory — slot it before the Act 3 swap, not after. Lilly Roth sells both gems.
- ! Mind over Matter and Eldritch Battery are tempting but DO NOT take them on this build. Pious Path in Uber Lab is the build's sustain layer, and energy shield scaling is what the endgame rare chest does — MoM fights the ascendancy instead of working with it.
- ! Greater Volley is a 3.28 Mirage Exceptional Support that replaced Greater Multiple Projectiles (which no longer exists). It is tradable, not a quest reward — budget around 1 divine for a leveled copy during league start week one, dropping to a few chaos by week two. Until you buy it, the 4-link and 6-link both work fine without it, just with tighter overlap.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Rush Inevitable Judgement as the fourth Inquisitor ascendancy — crits ignore enemy elemental resistance, which uncaps the ceiling of every hit
- Swap Cold Penetration Support (placeholder L1 gem) for a leveled Controlled Destruction Support or Increased Critical Damage Support — more damage per socket than penetration once Inevitable Judgement is online
- Anoint Whispers of Doom or craft a Kalandra's Touch mirror ring in the endgame pivot — both are meta upgrades that unlock a second curse / doubled ring value

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Spark of the Nova Inquisitor at this tier is a crit lightning caster where the transfigured gem fires its Spark projectiles outward in a nova pattern instead of the base skill's forward fan. The L82 reference runs it in a 6-link Silken Vest chest (Foulborn Ghostwrithe) with Spellblade + Spell Echo Support + Pierce Support + Pinpoint Support + Lightning Penetration Support, and the key damage vehicle is a 1H Energy Blade converting the entire main hand into pure lightning damage — one of the signature Inquisitor enablers. Energy Blade reserves maximum mana to mint a weapon that adds 72 to 1435 Lightning Damage, and Spellblade then scales that weapon damage into the spell. Blood Magic is taken (91% keystone share at this tier) precisely because Energy Blade ate the mana pool.
The Inquisitor ascendancy starts paying for itself immediately. Righteous Providence + Instruments of Zeal give raw spell crit chance and crit multiplier, Sanctuary contributes consecrated ground defence, and Pious Path lets consecrated ground follow on kill to fuel both regen and the crit bonus. The aim at this point is to rush Inevitable Judgement — once that notable is online, every crit lightning damage hit ignores enemy elemental resistance entirely, and the build's DPS floor jumps. Tree notables lean into crit multiplier (Nimbleness, Arcanist's Dominion) and lightning scaling (Deep Wisdom, Heart and Soul). Rathpith Globe on the off-hand trades 10% max life sacrifice per spell cast for 5% increased Spell Damage per 100 Player Maximum Life, turning the stacked life pool into raw spell crit chance and spell damage. Pain Attunement (91% share) adds +30% more Spell Damage at low life — maintained by Rathpith Globe's self-damage loop and Petrified Blood.
The defensive identity here is the low-life loop. Petrified Blood splits incoming hits across life and instant loss, keeping the player visually low (and Pain Attunement-eligible) without dying to big hits. 7.7k life + 3k energy shield stacked through Foulborn Ghostwrithe's 40% of max life as ES conversion yields 36k EHP. Resistances are overcapped (+49% fire, +91% cold, +79% lightning) so curses and penetration don't break the cap. 52% block + 49% spell block via Rathpith Globe and Tempest Shield covers physical hits. The Gull helmet is a Shrine-triggering meme that doubles as +77 life, +38 ES, and 75%-effect / 50%-duration shrine buffs on kill. Chaos resist is the only real hole (-2%) — Foulborn Ghostwrithe's +50% chaos res is doing heavy lifting but not yet enough.
Point-blank detonation. Spark of the Nova fires a ring of projectiles around the caster that bounce and pierce, so the playstyle is charge in with Shield Charge (linked with Haste + Faster Attacks + Eternal Blessing in the gloves) and stand on packs while the nova shreds them. Spell Echo Support doubles every cast, so 3.85 casts/sec becomes an effective ~7.7 effective spark waves/sec. Frostblink handles telegraph dodging between packs. Single-target is solved by positioning — the nova pattern means all projectiles overlap on a boss if you stand next to it, giving pseudo-Concentrated Effect scaling without the support gem. Conductivity curse in the weapon contributes another lightning-res shred that stacks with Inevitable Judgement's crit-ignore. The feel is all-in aggression — you trade a life chunk per cast but the build refills constantly through regen and the Inquisitor's consecrated ground.

Endgame L85–94
- The core engine doesn't change — Energy Blade + Spellblade + Pain Attunement + Blood Magic all stay. The L94 reference instead doubles damage through gear density: rare Doom Fist gloves embed Faster Projectiles Support + Faster Casting Support + +3.5% socketed crit chance + +50% socketed spell crit multi, and Kalandra's Touch appears in ring 2 to mirror the rare Death Nail (+39% crit multi) for a free second copy. The chest 6-link stays Foulborn Ghostwrithe. Inevitable Judgement is finally live, and Assassin's Mark is being cast via Assassin's Mark socketed in the weapon for crit chance and power-charge generation on marked kills.
- Pick up Forbidden Flame + Forbidden Flesh allocating Arcane Blessing — 53%/52% of endgame reference builds run this combo for free Intelligence scaling
- Craft a second Kalandra's Touch pairing against a well-rolled rare ring with +1 prefix mods (the L94 reference's Manifold Rings are the template) to mirror life and crit multi simultaneously
- Upgrade to Eternal Youth once life pool crosses 12k — 38% of endgame builds already run it and it converts ES regen into life regen for a smoother Petrified Blood loop

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
DPS climbs to 5.8M at 79.75% crit chance and 3.88x crit multi. The Doom Fist gloves are a hidden 4-link — the two embedded supports (Faster Projectiles Support + Faster Casting Support) plus the +3.5% crit chance / +50% crit multi socketed lines stack onto whichever gem sits in the gloves, and the L94 runs Spark of the Nova itself plus Spellblade + Greater Spell Echo + Invert the Rules + Critical Strike Affliction Support there — effectively a second 6-link carrying the main skill alongside the chest copy. Greater Spell Echo (exceptional support, 85% meta share at endgame) replaces normal Spell Echo Support for a large more-damage multiplier on repeats. Invert the Rules is the sneaky multiplier — it flips a chosen stat bucket, and at this tier it's tuned to re-roll against modifier pools the build otherwise ignores.
Inevitable Judgement is THE identity from here on: every crit lightning damage hit (and with 79.75% crit chance, that's nearly every hit) ignores enemy elemental resistance. Stacking Lightning Penetration Support becomes redundant against crits, which is why the L94 dropped it in favour of crit-multi supports — once resist is zero there's nothing to penetrate. Augury of Penitence (when picked up) adds +8% more elemental damage vs enemies affected by an ailment, and the lightning caster self-applies shock on every crit, so that multiplier is always live. Tree notables deepen the life/lightning package (Quick Recovery, Warrior's Blood, Expertise), and the large cluster Phoenix Solace adds Doryani's Lesson + Prismatic Heart + Storm Drinker for res + leech.
EHP doubles to 72k. 12.2k life is the main driver — doubled through tree scaling and rare gear (amulet +125 life, ring 3 +292 life, boots +119 life). Foulborn Ghostwrithe's conversion ratio tightens (43% of max life as ES), giving 5.2k ES on top. Petrified Blood still runs, still enables Pain Attunement. 52% block + 48% spell block remain. Chaos resist finally caps at +59% via Screams of the Desiccated (+30% chaos res) + Foulborn Ghostwrithe (+43% chaos res). Watcher's Eye contributes +46% chaos resist while affected by Purity of Elements, 33% faster ES recharge with Discipline, and 14% life recovery rate with Vitality — Purity of Elements and Vitality both run as auras under Eternal Blessing. Pantheon is Brine King + Abberath for stun and burning-ground immunity.
Faster and harder. Cast speed is 9.97 casts/sec effective — Greater Spell Echo pumps every cast into a triple-repeat barrage, and the nova pattern means a single shield-charge-in drops enough spark waves to instantly vapourize map packs. Boss rotations become stand-next-to-them DPS checks because Inevitable Judgement means resist-phase immunities and elemental-res maps simply stop mattering. Raise Spectre minions tank hits and proc Elemental Army's exposure, Automation + Convocation keeps them on top of the player. Assassin's Mark is self-cast via Automation (no manual cursor-click spam) — the build's rotation is purely Shield Charge → stand → hold-left-click, everything dies. The fourth ascendancy pick (Augury of Penitence) stacks cleanly on top of the shock the build already self-inflicts.

Aspirational L95–100
- The L100 reference is the deep Intelligence-stacker pivot — the aspirational ceiling abandons Blood Magic and the Energy Blade / Rathpith shell, picks up Jiquani's Potential staff (blood magic is built into the staff, freeing mana pool logic), and goes full CI/ES through rare Lich's Circlet + Warlock Gloves + Warlock Boots + Twilight Regalia. 3099 Intelligence scales everything: the staff grants 1 to 57 Spell Lightning Damage per 10 Intelligence, the chest converts intelligence into less-damage-taken, and the cluster jewel economy adds +8 Int per small passive stacks. Inevitable Judgement and Righteous Providence remain cornerstones. Pain Attunement holds, but Mind over Matter transforms into The Traitor via Brutal Restraint timeless jewel, and Elemental Overload + Eldritch Battery territory opens up for alternative builds (the reference keeps Elemental Overload).

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
Everything about this tier is Intelligence-scaling. Jiquani's Potential imperial staff is the damage engine: 1 to 57 spell lightning damage per 10 Int means at 3099 Int the weapon adds roughly 300 to 17,600 spell lightning damage directly onto every cast, before any support or tree scaling. Inevitable Judgement then strips resistance entirely on crit, and Augury of Penitence adds its more-multiplier against the self-applied shock. Righteous Providence (finally on the ascendancy again) pumps raw spell crit. The 6-link chest runs Spark of the Nova + Faster Projectiles Support + Greater Spell Echo + Controlled Destruction Support + Arcane Surge Support + Invert the Rules, dropping Spellblade entirely because the staff's flat-lightning-per-int dwarfs whatever Energy Blade would produce.
Cluster jewels do the heavy lifting on the tree. Three Large clusters (Phoenix Solace — old; Loath Prism — Storm Drinker; Rapture Spark — res stacker; Maelstrom Cut — pure Int/ES scaling) combine with Medium clusters (Rapture Splinter — Repeater, Streamlined; Brood Curio — Repeater, Streamlined) to flood the tree with projectile cast speed and Int. Unnatural Instinct (76% meta share) replaces allocated small passives with unallocated ones' bonuses for huge value density. Split Personality × 2 adds scaling Int based on passive distance from the Scion start. Brutal Restraint (Balbala dekhara) conquers a radius with Maraketh nodes. The Light of Meaning adds +4% chaos resist per passive in radius. Watcher's Eye grants 15% lightning penetration while affected by Wrath (superfluous under Inevitable Judgement but acts as the fallback against bosses with crit-immune phases) + 5% phys DR under Determination. Wrath, Herald of Thunder, Zealotry, and Aspect of the Spider stack simultaneously via Eternal Blessing + rare Hate Whorl Helical Ring (+170 Int, grants Aspect of the Spider). Fourth ascendancy is Augury of Penitence.
The reference's specific numbers are misleading — EHP 30k on paper is because the character was captured mid-build and the median aspirational build sits at 87k EHP. At the meta ceiling: 9.9k ES from stacked Energy Shield rolls (Twilight Regalia 97% increased ES, gloves 99%, boots 95%, helmet 73%), Int-scaled less-damage-taken (1% less damage taken per 230 Int on chest = ~13% less damage taken at 3099 Int), 75% chaos resist, and Coruscating Elixir makes chaos damage bypass the ES pool — catastrophic-chaos one-shots are the single remaining death condition. Arctic Armour + Frost Shield layer physical / fire mitigation. Oriath's End on-kill explosion flask keeps clearing chained. Coruscating Elixir converts removed life to ES over 2s, making the CI transition clean. Pantheon Lunaris + Yugul for chain mitigation and reflect immunity.
The apex Inquisitor experience. Spark of the Nova at 3099 Int with resist ignored by Inevitable Judgement and the multiplier stack from Augury of Penitence + Zealotry + Wrath hits a ceiling where pinnacle bosses fall in a single nova-ring. Movement is Frostblink of Wintry Blast (the transfigured shock-propagating variant), Animate Guardian tanks + enables auras that don't fit on the character, Oriath's End turns map clear into a chain of exploding packs. The build's rotation is degenerate on purpose — Shield Charge-equivalent positioning, stand, cast, everything in a two-screen radius dies. Power charge generation is free through Harrier + the mark-on-hit loop. The playstyle is pure Inquisitor power-fantasy: walk up, every lightning crit ignores resistance, every ailment feeds Augury of Penitence, the screen detonates.
