Leveling L1–68
- Act 1: run Frost BladesBuy Frost Blades from Nessa after killing Hillock and use it on any white claw you find. Ancestral Call Support drops from the Brutus quest — it turns Frost Blades into a solid clear skill through the first acts. Pick up Whirling Blades as your travel skill from a claw vendor in Act 1. Slot a low-level Clarity once mana starts to feel tight. A Goldrim helmet and Wanderlust boots are cheap leveling uniques that cover resist and move speed needs.
- Act 2: run Frost BladesPick up Herald of Agony from Yeena — this is the chaos-poison signature Herald of Agony and will carry through to endgame. Add Melee Physical Damage Support once you have a 4-link. Slot a low-level Cast when Damage Taken + Steelskin for panic defense. Take the "Alira" bandit reward (mana regen + crit multi + all res) — crit multi matters later and the resists smooth out gear requirements during leveling.
- Act 3: run Frost BladesMultistrike Support unlocks at L38 from Clarissa — slot it in for a major DPS jump. Grab Haste from the Library quest reward and run it alongside Clarity; the attack speed it provides is fantastic for a poison stacker. Pick up Flame Dash from the Library quest as a secondary mobility skill for gap-closing. Lab 1 here: Nature's Boon — this is where flasks start feeling free.
- Act 4: run Frost BladesPick up Despair from the Act 4 vendor once you finish the Kaom storyline — this is the curse you'll run forever as a chaos-poison build. Self-cast for now; later you can auto-apply it. Keep running Frost Blades as the main skill — the transition to Viper Strike of the Mamba is one act away and you want to arrive with a clean 4-link ready to receive the new gem.
- Act 5–6: run Viper Strike of the MambaViper Strike of the Mamba is bought from Lilly Roth in Act 6 — this is the transition gem. Deadly Ailments Support and Vile Toxins Support are also from Lilly and are the two key poison support gems the build leans on. Keep Multistrike Support for the attack speed and extra hits (more poison stacks). A Bloodseeker claw fits perfectly here if you can get one — the innate leech is huge for survivability. Lab 2 in Act 6 area: Master Surgeon.
- Act 7+: run Viper Strike of the MambaSlot Empower Support once you hit 5-link — it pushes Viper Strike of the Mamba's gem level for free chaos damage over time scaling. Run Precision at a low level for accuracy without eating too much mana; crit applies poison harder via Master Toxicist once you unlock it. Keep Haemophilia gloves on if you went that route — the increased poison damage from them is a significant chunk. Lab 3 in Act 9: Nature's Reprisal.
How leveling works
Viper Strike of the Mamba is a transfigured claw/dagger attack that stacks heavy poison on every hit, scaling almost entirely through chaos damage over time rather than hit damage. As a Pathfinder you lean on Master Surgeon for permanent flask uptime, Nature's Reprisal for bonus chaos damage over time while flasks are active, and Master Toxicist for the signature poison multiplier. The build doesn't truly come online until you have the transfigured gem (purchased from Lilly Roth in Act 6) plus a 4-link that can host Deadly Ailments Support and Vile Toxins Support, so the early campaign is spent on a placeholder skill.
The recommended path is Frost Blades on a claw for Acts 1–4 (keeps you on-weapon and on-archetype), then swap to Viper Strike of the Mamba in Act 5–6 once Lilly Roth is available. The Pathfinder ascendancy points you'll grab in the Labs are: Nature's Boon → Master Surgeon → Nature's Reprisal → Master Toxicist. Master Surgeon is the build-defining pickup: permanent flask uptime keeps Nature's Reprisal's damage bonus live at all times, which is how the build gets its mapping smoothness.
Rare jewellery with life and resists, a 5-link as soon as you can craft one, and a Tabula Rasa if you find one will carry you through the campaign. Bloodseeker is a strong leveling claw once you hit its level requirement; Haemophilia gloves give free poison scaling. Save currency for the endgame transition — don't sink it into leveling uniques beyond those two.
Gear while leveling
- · Weapon: a claw while leveling — Bloodseeker is ideal once you hit its level requirement for the innate leech. Before that, any rare claw with flat physical or chaos damage and attack speed. Vendor-recipe elemental claws (magic claw + topaz/sapphire/ruby + Blacksmith's Whetstone) are fine stopgaps through early acts.
- · Body armour: rush a Tabula Rasa if you can find/buy one — a guaranteed 6-link is worth more than any leveling rare. Otherwise a 4-link evasion chest with life and resists.
- · Gloves: Haemophilia is a cheap, permanent-until-endgame pickup — the increased poison damage is a core scaler for the whole build.
- · Helmet/boots: prioritise life and resists. Goldrim and Wanderlust as cheap early-act slot fillers; swap to rares once you need the life.
- · Rings/amulet: life + resists, with attribute fix-ups as needed. A cheap rare amulet with chaos damage over time multiplier once available is a major spike.
- · Belt: Heavy Belt or Leather Belt with life and resists. No unique belts needed during leveling.
- · Flasks: this is where Pathfinder shines — a life flask with bleed-removal, a quicksilver, a granite, a silver or sulphur for offence, and a diamond flask once available. All five benefit from flask effect and flask uptime via Master Surgeon.
Weapon progression
Any rare 1H claw with flat physical damage and attack speed carries the early acts. Al Dhih is a cheap claw option in mid-acts if you find one. The build-defining leveling claw is Bloodseeker — pick it up as soon as you hit the level requirement for the innate leech, which massively smooths out survivability during the Viper Strike of the Mamba transition. The endgame target weapon is a rare Imperial Claw or similar with flat chaos damage, attack speed, and crit — but that is far above leveling priorities. Get to maps with any decent claw, then start hunting the upgrade.
Tree to aim for (by level 90)
Watch out for
- ! Don't take Vile Toxins Support before you have the transfigured gem — on a placeholder like Frost Blades it doesn't help much because you aren't stacking enough poison yet. Vile Toxins Support scales WITH poison stacks, so it wants the real skill to be online first.
- ! Master Surgeon gives permanent flask uptime only while you're generating flask charges — make sure at least one utility flask has the "enchanted" or innate charge-on-crit behaviour or you can run dry in long boss fights. Pathfinder auto-refills via Nature's Boon partly mitigates this but don't rely on it 100%.
- ! Herald of Agony's Virulence stacks come from applying poison, not from hitting. Early on with Frost Blades you won't be poisoning reliably — the herald minion will feel weak until Viper Strike of the Mamba takes over. Don't panic and swap it out.
- ! Chaos Inoculation is NOT taken on this build — Pathfinder wants life + flask-based defences, not ES. Ignore any guide that mentions Chaos Inoculation for a Viper Strike variant; that's a different archetype.
- ! Cospri's Malice is sometimes suggested as a leveling claw, but it's a cold-damage weapon and fights against the chaos scaling — skip it and use Bloodseeker or a rare claw instead.
Early Mapping L70–84
- Replace Tabula Rasa with a 6-link The Covenant or rare evasion chest once the build can afford the jeweller/fusing cost — instantly adds 1k+ life and starts closing the suppress gap
- Swap the Pressurised Dagger for a rare Pneumatic Dagger with "All Damage from Hits with This Weapon can Poison" + +Chaos Damage over Time Multiplier — the Pneumatic base has higher crit and implicit poison scaling
- Pick up Master Surgeon as the fourth ascendancy next — instant flask charges on crit turn flask uptime from 'mostly on' to 'permanently on'

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
At this tier Viper Strike of the Mamba is already running its signature engine — a transfigured dagger strike that stacks chaos poison and lingers as a chaos damage over time pool that follows the enemy. The reference L78 Pathfinder mains a rare Pressurised Dagger (Death Razor) with the critical "All Damage from Hits with This Weapon can Poison" suffix, paired with a Bino's Kitchen Knife in the second hand — the Slaughter Knife's on-kill poison-proliferation radius is doing most of the early map clearing. The 6-link lives in a Tabula Rasa: Viper Strike of the Mamba + Added Chaos Damage + Void Manipulation + Swift Affliction + Deadly Ailments + Efficacy, a pure ailment-scaling stack that leans into poison DoT rather than hit damage. Ashes of the Stars amulet adds +1 to Level of all Skill Gems plus +25% quality, so every linked support is overlevelled and overqualitied for the tier.
A Spell Totem + Multiple Totems setup fires Wither stacks on bosses (up to 15% increased chaos damage taken per stack), and Despair curses the target via Alchemist's Mark mark-on-hit from the boots. Malevolence + Grace reserve mana for chaos damage over time multiplier and evasion scaling, and Herald of Agony rides the build's guaranteed poison application for a permanent Agony Crawler minion. Tree points fund Master Toxicist, Toxic Strikes, Fatal Toxins, Swift Venoms, and Wasting — the classic poison notable rosary — plus Herbalism and Careful Conservationist for flask charge income that Pathfinder lives on. Sheet 1.34M DPS reads above the tier median of 431k because Wither, poison stacks, and Despair are already layered.
Defence is the thin-but-functional early-map stack: 4,059 life, 22k evasion, 63% spell suppress (not yet capped), and 53% chaos resist from ring/jewel rolls. EHP 17.6k sits on top of the tier median. The Tabula Rasa costs all body-armour defence — no life, no evasion, no resists from the chest slot — which is the single biggest reason EHP isn't higher. Elemental resistances cap cleanly with comfortable overcap (+10/+17/+22% fire/cold/lightning), protecting against shock/chill application. Thick Skin and Blood Drinker give baseline life + leech, and the Stibnite Flask's 49% reduced Chill effect + 52% reduced Freeze duration line plugs the ailment gap while suppress is still incomplete. Flask uptime is already the Pathfinder identity — flask effect duration rolls on Glyph Vessel jewel + Pandemonium Bliss + tree nodes keep Jade, Quicksilver, and the Stibnite rolling almost continuously.
Slow-building but forgiving. Viper Strike of the Mamba itself isn't fast (1.41 attacks/sec sheet speed), but poison stacks compound on bosses while Bino's Kitchen Knife's on-kill proliferation wipes packs around corpses. Flame Dash in the claw carries movement, and the Brewer's Jade + Brewer's Quicksilver combo gives permanent evasion + move speed during sustained combat. Single target is the build's strength at this tier: apply Wither via totem, mark with Alchemist's Mark to auto-Despair, strike once or twice, walk away while the poison ticks kill. Clear is slower than a typical hit-based build but never dangerous — the Agony Crawler from Herald of Agony is already tanky enough to hold aggro on rares while you reposition.

Endgame L85–94
- The main transitions at endgame are the body armour swap, a keystone pivot, and the weapon pair upgrade. Tabula Rasa is replaced by Doppelganger Guise (the Sadist Garb unique), Bino's Kitchen Knife is dropped for a matched pair of rare Pneumatic Daggers both carrying the "All Damage from Hits with This Weapon can Poison" suffix, and a Glorious Vanity timeless jewel in the Vaal cluster rewrites Elemental Equilibrium into Divine Flesh — turning 50% of elemental damage taken into chaos, which the build's 83% chaos resist absorbs cheaply. Master Surgeon is picked up as the fourth ascendancy.
- Upgrade Swift Affliction and Deadly Ailments to Lv21 via 20% quality gem corruption — ~10% more DoT multiplier on a sixth of the build's damage
- Replace the Brewer's Quicksilver with a Progenesis Amethyst Flask — 25% of hit damage taken over 4s is the single strongest one-shot protection a Pathfinder can slot
- Swap to Mageblood once budget allows — guaranteed four-flask uptime scales every utility flask's damage/defence line at once

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The rare dagger pair is the damage story. Torment Sever (main hand) adds +21% chaos damage over time multiplier, 81–164 fire + 61–159 chaos damage, and 12% chaos resistance penetration. Gloom Bite (off-hand) adds +26% damage over time multiplier plus flat fire/cold/lightning damage, all of which pipes into poison scaling because Viper Strike of the Mamba's poison inherits from the weapon's full hit damage. Both weapons alternate per strike, so every hit gets one of the two DoT multipliers applied. The 6-link migrates into Doppelganger Guise: Viper Strike of the Mamba + Melee Physical Damage Support + Fortify + Swift Affliction + Added Chaos Damage + Deadly Ailments Support — Fortify replaces Efficacy for the melee-range defensive buff, and Melee Physical Damage Support scales the physical portion that feeds poison.
Doppelganger Guise's Unhinge mechanic is the boss-phase pivot: the chest grants a Level 20 Unhinge skill that toggles Insane state for 54% more critical strike chance, and Sane state gives 34% less physical and chaos damage taken. The build sits Sane during trash and flips Insane on bosses for the crit burst. Despair is now self-cast via Alchemist's Mark + Battlemage's Cry on the gloves, and Autoexertion keeps the warcry running. Whirling Blades + Faster Attacks in the helmet replaces Flame Dash for true melee mobility. Tree picks up Intuition, Acuity, and Revenge of the Hunted for raw crit + evasion scaling, and drops pure poison notables that the rare daggers now duplicate.
EHP doubles to 35.8k and suppress climbs to 87%. The Tides of Time belt is the defensive centerpiece — +314 armour/evasion, 100% increased life recovery from flasks, 25% increased flask effect, and passive charge regen on life/mana/utility flasks. Pathfinder's Nature's Adrenaline + Master Surgeon + Natural Remedies combined with the belt means Divine Life + Sulphur + Quicksilver + Sapphire (Taste of Hate) + Amethyst are essentially always active. Divine Flesh converts 50% of elemental damage taken to chaos, and 83% chaos resist (with 54% overcap) means the build takes elemental hits at roughly half their listed value. Ancestral Vision converts the 87% suppress into 43% elemental ailment avoidance. Petrified Blood + Arctic Armour + Flesh and Stone add layered damage mitigation. Life regen 5,880/s + ES regen 5,876/s via Replica Sorrow of the Divine's Eldritch Battery flask covers sustained combat.
Smoother and more deliberate than early mapping. Whirling Blades gives instant repositioning into pack centers, Unhinge proc from Doppelganger Guise triggers the kill-destruction explosion on clear, and Battlemage's Cry bursts Despair application across whole screens. Single-target is stutter-step: Whirling Blades in, apply 2-3 Viper Strike of the Mamba stacks, Whirling Blades out, watch the chaos damage over time pool melt the boss. Flask uptime is effectively permanent during sustained combat — Pathfinder's Master Surgeon refills flasks on crit, the belt regens them on timer, and Natural Remedies extends every utility flask's duration. Flask effect scaling turns the Quicksilver + Sapphire + Amethyst trio into permanent buffs for all combat windows.

Aspirational L95–100
- Aspirational commits to the Pathfinder flask + aura stacking identity. The helmet swaps to Brood Visor (Blizzard Crown with -9% enemy chaos resist nearby), boots become The Tempest Rising Goliath Greaves (damaging ailments deal damage 25% faster), a Sublime Vision prismatic jewel locks the build into Purity of Lightning-only aura mode with 38% increased aura effect, and The Light of Meaning prismatic jewel adds +4% chaos resistance to radius passives. Progenesis replaces the utility Amethyst flask and a Raise Spectre + Animate Guardian minion package fills the gloves.

How this stage plays (mechanics, defences)
The endgame dagger pair carries forward with Chimeric Slicer (main hand, Hits can't be Evaded implicit + 11% attack speed) and Gloom Sever (+28% chaos DoT multiplier). The 6-link refines to Viper Strike of the Mamba + Melee Physical Damage Support + Elemental Focus + Swift Affliction + Added Cold Damage + Deadly Ailments Support — Elemental Focus replaces Added Chaos Damage because the elemental portion of hits scales poison more efficiently once Brood Visor's treat cold resistance as 10% higher + Brood Visor's 85–127 cold damage helm implicit stack with Gloom Sever's added cold.
The scaling stack at full power: Wither from Withering Step on the helm (no more totem needed — Pathfinder's movement speed + flask uptime makes Withering Step permanent), Despair via Mark On Hit + Alchemist's Mark + Enhance on the helm gives Lv22+ Despair for -44% chaos resistance, Brood Visor's -9% chaos resistance aura, and the weapon's 12% penetration together push enemies to effectively -65% chaos resistance — the chaos damage over time pool then ticks at double-plus value. Tree adds Master of the Arena, Expert Hunter, and Art of the Gladiator, and the full Glorious Vanity / Divine Flesh / Sublime Vision axis converts half of all elemental damage taken to chaos where 81% chaos resist absorbs it. Sheet 5.1M DPS understates boss damage by roughly 2x because Wither, Despair, and Brood Visor's resist reduction compound on top.
EHP 60.3k, 95% suppress, +1 minimum frenzy charge from the rare Synaptic Ring, 12% physical damage reduction, and Progenesis turning a quarter of all hit damage into a 4-second DoT — the combination is the classic Pathfinder one-shot-proof profile. Divine Flesh + 81% chaos res means elemental hits are absorbed by chaos mitigation rather than stacking with element-specific caps. Petrified Blood + Arctic Armour + Progenesis layer over 4,534/s life regen for sustain. Doppelganger Guise's Sane state still gives 40% less physical and chaos damage taken during trash, and Insane state is toggled for the crit burst window on bosses. The Tempest Rising's "You and Enemies count as moving while affected by Elemental Ailments" + Stormshroud's "avoid being shocked applies to all ailments" + flask shock/chill immunity rolls hold the ailment layer together. Flask uptime is effectively permanent — Master Surgeon + The Tides of Time + Natural Remedies + Nature's Adrenaline is the strongest flask-sustain stack in the game.
Apex Pathfinder flow: flask-soaked, ailment-drenched, one-shot-resistant. Withering Step applies Wither stacks during movement itself — no setup required — and Whirling Blades chains through packs while the animated spectre and guardian (Doppelganger Guise's Unhinge + the minion package) hold frontline aggro. Pinnacle bosses fall to the Despair + Wither + Brood Visor resist-reduction stack combined with the -65% effective chaos resist ceiling and Progenesis's DoT conversion absorbing their biggest telegraphs. Flask uptime is permanent, crit is boosted by Watcher's Eye's 108% increased crit chance against consecrated ground while affected by Zealotry, and the frenzy charge from the Synaptic Ring gives baseline attack speed + damage even on single-target pulls. Viper Strike of the Mamba remains what it always was — a slow-striking dagger with a chaos damage over time afterbite — but the ailment-compounding identity is now a full-spectrum boss-deletion setup.
